Playing XI will be what played the first test in B'desh. Lord Ishant will thus (unfortunately) get a chance. Also its hard on Rahul, to miss out after a 100 in Aus, but I think the best way for India to sort out this opener issue is Dhawan should open in Sub-continent, while Rahul should open abroad.

Dhawan is a match winner in the sub-continent, and should not be dropped. Rahul sure if he can do the job overseas then great nothing like it.

I don't understand why the poster above has put the choice as Vijay/Rahul. Where does the 'slash' come from. Where is the question that Vijay will not play. Vijay has been one of the best openers in the World in the past year or so. If anything the 'slash' should be Dhawan/Rahul.

As already said, I would prefer Dhawan over Rahul in SL.

Only if it was an option. If Dhawan plays well in the sub-continent you don't drop him for the first 3 tests of an overseas tour. Rahul's Sydney ton doesn't testify his overseas batting capabilities for now but will we see him anytime in the sub-continent soon unless there is an injury? You know it's the usual.

^ Its horses for courses, you change your bowling line according to where you are playing. Those who can win you games in the sub-continent you play in the sub-continent, those that can win you games away, you play away. No one complains when a spinner does win a game at home, but is dropped when faced with a green pitch abroad.

Why should it be any different for batsmen. Those who are suited to score runs in the sub-continent play in the sub-continent, those who can handle the moving ball better play abroad.

This should be followed, and if after a great run, Dhawan has to be dropped for an overseas test, then so be it.

I actually think India has a great chance of winning this series. If we can somehow manage Sanagakara and don't decide to give him a retirement gift like we did to Murlidharan. Their team is in a transition phase but again they are strong at home especially with their spinners. Indian team lately have struggled against spinners so that will also be crucial. If they team play upto their potential, I think they can win this series.

Kohli has announced his intent - Rohit Sharma is going to be India's Test No.3 for a while. He is going to be given time to settle down and make that spot his own. And also, India is going to be persist with the 5-bowler combination as it gives them the best shot at 20 wickets (fair enough).

But in all this, the message to Pujara is - perform a miracle or fade into oblivion like many of India's domestic greats who had so much potential but were instead not preferred over flashy strokemakers. Kohli's ideology is that Rohit is a natural strokemaker and therefore deserves more chances in tests. Well a proper test batsman like Pujara has to make way for a flashy strokemaker like Rohit in a test lineup because Kohli prefers flashy players. Is this gonna be our future for test cricket? Flashy players preferred over test specialists, in test cricket?

You need to understand one thing here. Pujara is a solid player and we all know that but he needs runs to justify his place in the team. He scored runs in South Africa but then he struggled in New Zealand, England and Australia. He had an amazing chance to get back into the reckoning by putting up a big score against inexperienced bowling of Australia A but he failed there as well. So Rohit for now deserve his chance. If he fails, then we can always bring back Pujara. We all know that Rohit is very inconsistent. However when in flow, he can bat against any bowling attack in any conditions. He needs to perform even more consistently now because he will be batting at number 3. Our only realistic chance of getting 20 wickets is playing with 5 bowlers and If we are going with that plan, I hate to say it but Pujara has to miss out for now.
