International Auction Complete

The International Auction for the English Premier League has concluded today. Among the players was veteran legspinner Shane Warne who defied all the odds to fetch the highest price of the day - a cool ?600,000 for Brighton and Hove Albion. However, his purchase was all the more special because the south coast outfit had already bought retired Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. The two highest test wicket takers are now united for the same team, and it is a frightening prospect for the other sides in the competition. Of course, such class has to come at a price, although their shrewd picks don't show it: Justin Kemp, the big South African all rounder; Rilee Rossouw, the uncapped batsman; Nathan McCullum, the off-spinner; and Mark Gillespie, the Kiwi seamer.

Another team that had trouble keeping to the ?3 million salary cap was Birmingham who picked up Mike Hussey and Shane Watson alongside their English stars, Andrew Strauss and Eoin Morgan. They are two of the teams to watch for batting and bowling respectively.

The spin duo with over 1500 test wickets between them are to be united for Brighton and Hove Albion.

Some notable players who missed out on contracts included Mitchell Johnson and Jean-Paul Duminy, neither of whom fetched a single bid. Numerous players also turned down contracts offered, including the Pathan brothers who were aggrieved to be offered less in total than either of them earned on their own in the IPL. A benefactor from this is Ragheb Aga, the Kenyan all rounder who may just get a game when Jacques Kallis is absent for the test matches.

Team Previews: Liverpool Lightning

attachment.php

Liverpool Lightning, the team who are set to play in the league's smallest stadium, have still managed to attract some big name players and sponsors. With the backing of main sponsors Nike and Unicef, the Lightning will go most of the way towards recouping the money that would otherwise have been earned from spectators.

Liverpool will be hoping for big things from captain Kevin Pietersen, while their go-to man with the ball will probable be Matthew Hoggard.

So, as you can see, the Liverpool Lightning have some big names to call on. From warmer climes come Shiv Chanderpaul, Fawad Alam and Tillakaratne Dilshan. Alongside Kevin Pietersen, they will bolster the top-five nicely, but can they overcome their lack of bowling? Aside from the lightning pace of Shaun Tait, the northern based outfit have very little to call on. Matthew Hoggard and James Tredwell are the definition of reliable, but do they have the X-Factor needed to turn starts into victories? Only time will tell.

Possible XI - Dilshan +, Roy, Pietersen *, Chanderpaul, Alam, Hamilton-Brown, Tredwell, Doherty, Mahmood, Hoggard, Tait
Potential - Super Six stage.

Team Previews: Manchester United

The second Lancashire-based franchise, Manchester United take their name from the world's most successful football club. With a test-status ground they can call home, there should be plenty of revenue from gate sales, as well as from their sponsors, Brit Insurance and adidas. Let's see how they spent their ?3 million in the auction:

Manchester's opening pair look solid and settled - Hafeez, dependable with the bat as well as being an able enough bowler to reach number two in the world; Cook, the run machine who batted for 36 hours in the Ashes.

The way to describe the Manchester side is dependable. From the top of the order to the bottom, their team is jam-packed with players who will never let the team down. The biggest question, though, will be whether the team have the match-winning potential to turn a solid performance into a victory. In Jonny Bairstow, they have one such player, but it remains to be seen whether anybody else can step up to the plate. United have also utilised the bits-and-pieces cricketers: men who are proficient at everything, and might just prop up a Twenty20 team.

Possible XI - Cook *, Hafeez, Root, Sinclair, Bairstow +, Styris, Wright, Chapple, Arafat, Ali, Edwards
Potential - Super Six stage.

Team Previews: Capital Lions

attachment.php

The first of the two London franchises in the EPL, Capital Lions have a feather in their cap: they will be playing their games at the home of cricket. They will be hoping to rise to their surroundings and do their sponsors ESPN proud, and to provide The Sun with some headline victories. The question is, how did they spend their ?3 million?

An unbelievable opening pair for the Lions - possibly the two most destructive hitters in world cricket will take to the field together at Lord's, and it's a daunting prospect.

Capital Lions have got the X-Factor. They have both Chris Gayle and Virender Sehwag at the top of the order, and you can guarantee that if one of them fails, the other one will make up for it in spectacular fashion. Elsewhere in the team, they have the extremely classy Ian Bell, the young and promising Ben Stokes, and the immensely talented Herschelle Gibbs. They are slightly lihter in the bowling department, but local talent like Boyd Rankin and Adil Rashid should serve well enough to defend the sort of scores the batsmen are likely to set.

Possible XI - Gayle, Sehwag, Gibbs, Bell *, Stokes, Young +, Marsh, Allenby, Rashid, Kirby, Rankin
Potential - The Finals.
