Education's Over rated?

That is why I am contemplating whether I want to go to uni, or continue with the manager training scheme at M&S, or go to Sandhurst.

I'd be concerned by the idea you want to do something in football or cricket. Even if you were good enough to play them professionally all young players are advised to have an alternate skill in case things go wrong (injuries etc). If not as a player are you talking about ground staff, administrators, physios? I suggest you get in contact with some people who are involved in sport (your school or local career centre can help) and talk to them about what it is they do and what qualifications they needed.

Sport --> probably either as a cricket player or involved in coaching etc etc.

I dont know other jobs but have talked to people. At the moment its what im interested in and despite school I see my strengths in knowledge and understanding in sport.

Any advice for this would be helpful but at the moment im doing A leves

- Maths (maybe not dont know about standard)
- English
- Geography
- Sports Studies

and then see what happens, hope to study at Loughborough (sport) although unsure.

If you're good enough to play cricket professionally then that's great, but often people leave school thinking they'll get a contract and miss out and realise they'd been planning on playing sport and don't have anything else to fall back on. It's important that you find something you can do as a career, especially in cricket where you may start off playing club cricket and not making much money until you get called up to a county or international side.

Just as many people don't follow their dreams because they want to make money. You should make sure that money doesn't become too important for you.

I think its stupid. Whats the point of knowing x +y is it just made to be difficult? They may use it in engineering but most people dont use engineering. They're pretty much creating a new subject for one job.(yes algrebra is a subject)
I think you should know the basic and stuff but when it gets to stuff what you are probably never going to use whats the point? Once you get to grade 8 you do a lot of algebra and this.
I think English needs to be rechecked also. Is there a need to know how to spell antidisestablishmentterrianism?

Spelling isn't generally part of English beyond primary school, but what you learn in English is obviously important when you live in an English speaking country. Spelling is very important, if you can't spell how will you send people things? Antidisestablishmentarianism (only one t in the tarianism bit) is not one that you would commonly find in English class.

As for maths, some of the specifics aren't important but a lot of employers will only hire you if you have completed year 12 maths. The things that you learn are also sometimes less important than the actual work that you end up doing which not only expands your knowledge but works your brain.

Additionally, maths is all about problem solving, and you find that everywhere.

Very viable point and one that I have been told time and time by ex pro cricketers, pro cricket coaches and friends/family.

I spoke to one guy who played for Kent in the 80's/90's. He now works with my dad after leaving pro cricket after 8 years at 28 years old. Thjis guy lets call him Sam went to UNI throughout playing cricket, got a degree and did work on the side. Like Louden he left as bussiness was the way for him.

He told me of another guy in his team. Lets call him Jeff well Jeff was very good, close to England, a fringe player. Never got the call up and played till he was 32. He never went to UNI as always thought he would be a national. He now sells toilets and earns minimum wage.

He told me that it doesnt matter if I am the next Shane Warne, I NEED UNI AND I NEED EDUCATION.


I understand this is all forms. I understand that no.1 priority for the next 2 years is Academics. The school can be the way. The question for me is one that doesnt effect me directly and I just want to know as a lot have said what you think of education.

Seeing as you've mis-spelt it hopefully not...
On the other hand what schools actually aim to teach now is skills not content. We are showing pupils how to learn and endowing them with a variety of approaches and techniques for getting through life rather than expecting them to rote-learn facts.

I did an undergraduate history degree and a post graduate teaching diploma. Alternatively I could have done an undergraduate teaching degree (primary only). One of the reasons I decided not to do that was so I could keep my options open if I decided at some point I didn't want to be a teacher. I also enjoyed writing and studying history.
In terms of did I plan it I have worked with kids since the age of 14/15. Through helping with a cub pack and then sports coaching as a summer job for a few years. When I left school I went and worked in a school in New Zealand for a year where I was involved with teaching music and sport. So to answer your question I probably knew I wanted to be a teacher by the time I started Uni at 19 but I didn't actually qualify until I was 24.

What Jobs are out there that involve sport whether it be Football, Cricket?

I honestly dont think that I will get a sporting job but tbh I just dont have any idea.

Like most 16 year olds Im not planning my life maybbe unlike most 16 year olds.


Have to add in though today that my coach said I was bowling at first grade/county standard today which gave me a big

Another guy at my school has got in the squad, luckily, and yet he is still planning on the going to uni to study Sport Science. Basically that degree let's you do anything in sport (I've heard)
