Dhoni ready for Test captaincy: Kirsten

Gary Kirsten warned by BCCI

BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah reacted to Team India coach Gary Kirsten's comments on India's Test captaincy asking him to stay away from media, according to Times Now.Shah also said that it is selectors’ job to decide about the captaincy issue.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership qualities got a thumbs up from India's cricket coach Gary Kirsten who said the ODI skipper was now ready to take over the Test captaincy from Anil Kumble.

"He (Dhoni) is ready for it (Test captaincy) but there is no need to rush as of now. Anil has done an exceptional job, he is a great leader and he is toiling in many overs for India. He is prepared to do 30 overs in a day. But he is on the other side of the physical side of the game.

I thought this would happen, selectors coming in between, yes selectors are right in some way that it's not Coach's job, also Kumble is not performing badly,so no need to say anything from Coach right now,if at all Kumble was performing low, loosing all matches, poor decisions, then after some frustration Coach said something,it might have sounded OK,but this is not his job, otherwise why whould he have been appointed.
WHat's your opinion?

The cricketer who takes time out of test cricket, to focus on ODI cricket, isn't ready for Test captaincy.

What should someone who is completely exhausted do? If he plays badly with fatigue, everyone will say he is not ready for test cricket. He did not do it to concentrate on ODIs.

It's quite difficult for a wicket-keeper to be captain in a test especially in India, where its always hot. Bob Taylor says that keeping in hot conditions is enough to worry about but captaining a side is too much for a keeper to do in the longer form off the game.

I think that Kumble deserves more of a run of captaincy before giving it up to someone else.

Having looked at old CricInfo articles you seem to be right. Though I seem to remember the excuse given as what I said.

Give Dhoni Test captaincy and he will average 70 with bat.

Yep. Dhoni's current Test average of about 32 doesn't reflect really how good a player he his, If you notice he mainly comes to the crease when the top order has failed, Therefore he has mountains of pressure on him all the time, I say kick Ganguly back to Kolkota and put Dhoni in at 3.

Number 3? I am not sure thats going to happen with Sachin, Dravid and Laxman in the side(IF Ganguly is dropped). Even if one of them retire I would give that spot to Badri rather than Dhoni as he has played most of the time in his career at that position in the First Class level. Dhoni should be the number 4 batsman after Sachin retires.

Dhoni up the order in a test match after keeping for possibly over two days, plus giving him captaincy to worry with?

That's tough.

Dhoni should not be batting at 3 in Test matches. I would prefer Laxman/Dravid to come in at 3 and Dhoni to replace Ganguly at 5. This would allow us to play one more batsman:

1. Sehwag
2. Gambhir
3. Laxman
4. Tendulkar
5. Dravid
6. Dhoni
7. Badrinath?
8-11. Bowlers

Until our top-middle order retires all newcomers will have to bat down low unless they are specialists (such as openers).

I think Kumble should captain India for the Aussie test series and let Dhoni take charge after that.

This is what was said when Kumble was selected captain for the India-Australia test series IN AUSTRALIA! But Kumble was retained after that and kept going on.

I for one feel that its time for Kumble to step down completely and let other spinners grow in test cricket. We will have a dull period for the spinners (Harbhajan with his current comeback could minimise that dull period for the spinners) but some spinner should click and cement his spot in the test team. And as far as captaincy goes, Dhoni is absolutely ready to take up the mantle. Its better for Dhoni to start off with a test series against Australia IN INDIA. The competition will be very heavy, and at the same time Dhoni will find comfort in the fact that they're playing in India where India still has a good advantage in the past 10-15 years over Australia.

Not a logic that I would buy. In India, the best test players do not always end up as captains. When Ganguly took up captaincy, he was not the best test player. He was successful, and he had the captaincy capabilities and so he was captain. Same way, Dhoni has been a successful captain in the other forms, and he has had success in the test format (of course the last few series for him has been below average).

I agree. He is the best choice for a captain in the Indian squad in my opinion. He is young, which at first will be bad but when he matures as a captain it will work on his and India's side, cause they will get another 2 years out of him.

He has already shown as vice captain of the test side and captain of the ODI and Twenty20 sides that he is capable, now it's up to him to prove it on the world stage.

Yes. Dhoni should always come at No.5 or No.6 where he can try to steady the innings in case of a collapse, or he can drive home the advantage (if we are in such a position). Badri should be our future No.3 followed by Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh (yes, I expect Yuvraj to make a comeback in test cricket, he is the eternal comeback man who will always fall down and keep making comebacks).

:hpraise:hpraise:hpraise

not only that, he was busy shooting umpteen commercials during
his supposed break period !!

i'd say kumble is fine for now. the captain is only as good as his team.
the seniors are experienced enough to know when to call it quits !

Yuvraj Singh (yes, I expect Yuvraj to make a comeback in test cricket, he is the eternal comeback man who will always fall down and keep making comebacks).

10 falls and 1 comeback is not good enough at the international level !!

Make Joginder Sharma open the bowling & batting and make him captain as well.
