Well with Australia falling in the ashes series despite England not playing great, many players have come under some scrutiny. Do you think Australia should now put in a youth policy and try and built another team of the early 2000's? This would probably mean getting rid of people like Ponting, Hussey and Lee and bringing in people like Hughes, Ferguson, Holland etc.

When I saw this was the most recently posted thread in cricket discussion I prayed to god it wasn't in the Ashes section.

Hussey and Lee should be out anyway - for our best players.

Our domestic system is good, they can learn there.

The youngsters have to be performing like Hughes did to get in. We can't just pick youngsters on potential aka throwing Henriques into the Test arena! Ferguson needs to backup with another good season before he gets thrown into Tests. But hes clearly next in line following a similar road to Clarke.

If Khawaja has another good season, and if Cooper gets a decent FC run and performs then I would get both into the ODI side at the very least.

That's what I was about to say.

The youth policy needs to be more on Domestic teams. Should be two youth batsman under the age of 21 and one youth bowler as well. Also a frontline spinner. Football(soccer) would use similiar strategy in a lot of areas in the world.

I don't think it should be a forced issue. Good pacemen are generally ripe in their early 20s, and batsmen of potential ought to be visible around that age too. Chopping and changing kills a team faster than you can grow it back from scratch.

I'm happy the way our domestic sides are playing the youngsters. Each State has at least one or two promising youngster in their starting 11. The main problem is the spinner issue. We definitely need to be forcing states to pick and use the spinner properly. Picking these part time spinners is not helping our quest for the next Test spinner.

Picking a guy just because he's young and helps build for the 'future' is a very English mentality to go in with after losing a series. Pick the best players, and back them to perform. If any of the batsmen are dropped (which I think would be a little harsh, as I don't think they've done badly, even Hussey managed a superb knock in that final innings) then I'd bring in either David Hussey or Brad Hodge, guys that are proven performers and have been doing it for years, not a 1 season wonder like Ferguson.

I don't think Katich and Watson will last long as an opening pair though tbh. I see Hughes and Jaques stepping up to the mantle in the next year or so. Think they're definitely the best opening partnership to take Australia forward.

*Waits for inevitable 'Brad Podge' post from Hooper.*

By the time we return to Australia in 2010 I don't really think the Australian team will have changed much. I see us going up against:

Hughes
Jaques
Ponting *
Clarke
Mussey/Watson/Dussey/Ferguson
North
Haddin +
Johnson
Hauritz
Siddle
Hilfenhaus

Do you seriously think that the selectors say "oh look he's been performing this season in the sheffield shield, put him in." They look at potential, technique and weaknesses that could be exposed at international level.

If a batsman has very solid technique and has finally fulfilled a bit of that potential at FC arena why not put him in? It's not just about scoring the match saving 150 you know.

Playing Test cricket as a batsman is about scoring runs. Why was Mike Hussey being talked about being dropped? It wasn't because his techinque had gone completely to pot, he was still looking decent at the crease, it's because he wasn't scoring runs. The selectors should be picking the best batsman to score runs in a Test match for Australia, forfilling abit of your potential in 1 season in FC cricket is not enough to prove you're a Test player. I'm of the belief that you pick a Test player when he's ready and good enough to play Test cricket, from what I've seen of Ferguson, and knowing he's only had 1 good season I don't think he's ready. Picking a player on potential never pays off in the short term.

I don't see why Katich would be squeezed out completely so soon. On the short term, Jaques might make it back, but selectors will probably wait on Hughes.

Phil Jaques needs to score runs post injury. We can't assume hes got his form back from previous years like we did for Hayden. Once he performs then get him in but you can't throw him back in with no runs under his belt.

Dussey doesn't have the temperament to make it at Test level. He continued to get out after making a start in ODIs, he had a sub par Shield season and hes been dropped from the ODI squad in place of White. That is enough to suggest the selectors now see him as a T20 specialist.
