High Hopes for English Premier League

After seeing the immediate success of the KFC T20 Big Bash, the English Cricket Board has decided to impliment a new competition to capitalise on the growing market for Franchise based Twenty20. The new, 15-team English Premier League is set to contain the finest players from England and abroad in a star-studded thriller of a competition at the height of summer.

"In the last couple of years, there has been definite Twenty20 overkill," says expert Mike Selvey, a writer from the Guardian. "This new format will pit the best players in the country against each other in an exciting competition that is simply made for the media-driven 21st century." With million-pound teams in every corner of the UK, it is clear to see what the public interest is focussed on. However, some people doubt the long term viability of the competition.

The top grounds in England have all been guarenteed franchises, but this could mean heartache for the smaller stadiums across the country.

This new look league may end up alienating as many people as it excites, with some county grounds like Chelmsford, Derby, Canterbury and Worcester finding themselves without teams, these county cricket boards could find themselves in even deeper financial trouble than before. The ECB is handing out compensation to those grounds affected by being omitted from the fixture list, but only a successful tournament can possibly silence the critics who say that the ECB has moved away from everything the public holds dear.

Wow! Its awesome!
And the smaller venues can be alternating home grounds for nearest places with teams. Or they can be used for hosting neutral matches, which again changes the format.

Big Names Flocking to England

The English Premier League is soon to be underway, and we can already reveal that some of the biggest names in cricket are lined up and ready to excite what are tipped to be record crowds. Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar, proprietor of countless records is set to grace the competition, saying that "It is my duty to take part in such an event - I will do everything I can to make it a success.

He will be joined by the likes of Dave Warner, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Shahid Afridi, just a few of the players who have taken the shortest form of the game by storm. The tournament has also been arranged so that an absolute minimum of players will be unavailable due to national commitments. "The only internationals to coincide with the Premier League," Andrew Strauss confirms, "will be the second England-South Africa test match and the Scotland ODI." This is certainly good news for cricket fans, because it means that top class players will be available throughout the tournament.

Players like veteran batsman Sachin Tendulkar and T20 superstar Shahid Afridi could be on the scorecards.

It is certainly a long time since the 1980s, when every domestic team would have at least two top class overseas stars: Sussex with Imran Khan and Garth Le Roux; Nottinghamshire with Richard Hadlee and Clive Rice; Somerset with Viv Richards, Sunil Gavaskar and Joel Garner. Now we can look forward to similar examples of class players permeating the English scene, because each county will be allowed to field not one or two but five overseas players at a time. The media say that this will dilute English talent, but one player who may have lost his place to an overseas player seems happy with the arrangement. "I will be able to learn new things about my game by getting to know global superstars," says James Vince. "To be able to learn from the likes of Mike Hussey and Ricky Ponting is a dream come true for me, and it will give me some idea of what I have to do to earn myself an EPL contract next year."

Tournament Struscture Confirmed

With the English Premier League set to kick off soon, the ECB has today confirmed that the fifteen franchises will be split geographically into three conferences. Each team will play four games, including two home and two away matches, and the top two from each conference will go forwards to the next stage.

Code:
[center][b]Conference Stage Fixtures[/b][/center]
1 v 2 3 v 4 5 v 1 2 v 3 4 v 5 1 v 3 5 v 2 4 v 1 3 v 5 2 v 4

Channel 5 Analyst, Simon Hughes, says that the competition structure makes sense: "Twenty20 is aimed at a family market, and it makes no sense to arrange the matches so that to get to an away evening match, a family would have to take the whole day out of school and work. Instead, the vast majority of these fixtures will be within an hour's drive." When he is asked what he thinks it will mean for the competition, Hughes says, "it reminds me of the formative years of the Twenty20 Cup, the first and best Twenty20 competition.

Local fixtures will mean that more away spectators will be able to support their teams - it also means less travelling for the elder statesmen of the competition.

After the teams have qualified through the conference stage, there will be a Super Six stage. Points will be carried forward from the Conference stage, so again there will be two home, two away matches for each team.

The very last day of the competition will be the Finals Day. The venue still has not been disclosed, but the two matches happening on the day will be:

Considering that England have already got so many counties and international players travel to England to play domestic cricket for quite a few years now and having a competition like this is gonna make their county even more interesting and more international players shall show interest.

Good luck for this story, The Author. This is a very interesting idea. :)
