Following on from @Rebel2k19 's successful ODI World Cup draft, I decided to start another here. As always, the aims are three-fold: firstly, to create the best team you can, and secondly to share some knowledge about the players you have chosen. Most importantly, though, please enjoy yourself. This isn't a competition. Hopefully by the end of this draft, we'll all know something new.

The theme of this draft is Left-Handed Cricketers. You will be putting together the best all-time Test team of left-handed players that you possibly can. But what exactly constitutes a left-handed cricketer?
  • In order to be eligible for this draft, a player must be left-handed at their dominant skill.
  • If a player has never bowled in their first-class career, then they will not be considered to have a secondary skill.
  • Up to five members of your team will be allowed to perform their secondary skill right-handed. This ensures that players like Alastair Cook and Trent Boult do not miss out on selection because of their secondary skills.
    • In the case of all-rounders whose primary skill is not obvious, their designated primary skill will depend upon their position in the batting order. Top five batsmen will be considered batting all-rounders, while those batting at seven or below will be considered bowling all-rounders. If you put an all-rounder at six, however, they will need to both bat and bowl left-handed.
  • Wicket-keepers must have batted left-handed. If they are selected as a wicket-keeper in your side, then their bowling hand is irrelevant.
  • At least one player in your squad must have been from a non-Test playing nation during their playing career.
THEREFORE
Possible Roles|Primary skill|Secondary skill|Counted as
:bat: :ar: :bwl:|Left-handed batsman|Left-handed bowler|:blueo: Standard player (no limit)
:wk:|Left-handed batsman|Wicket-keeper|:blueo: Standard player (no limit)
:bat: :ar:|Left-handed batsman|Right-handed bowler|:redo: Restricted player (max 5)
:ar: :bwl:|Left-handed bowler|Right-handed batsman|:redo: Restricted player (max 5)

  • :saf: :ar: Nicky Boje - VALID - He batted and bowled left-handed, and historical players are just fine.
  • :nzf: :bwl: Trent Boult - VALID - He's a specialist bowler, so his right-handed batting is fine. (No more than five such players in total though.)
  • :aus: :bat: Michael Clarke - INVALID - He bowled left-arm spin, but his batting (right handed) was a clear primary skill.
  • :eng: :bat: Alastair Cook - VALID - He's a specialist batsman, so his right-handed bowling doesn't matter. (No more than five such players in total though.)
  • :eng: :ar: Ben Stokes - VALID* - He's a genuine all-rounder, but if he bats in the top five then he is fine.

There's no upper limit on sign-ups, but there is a time limit. Please sign up before Monday 12th November at 23:59 GMT. If you want to specify a team name when you sign up, feel free. If you do not then your team will be known simply as your XI (see below)

Please, once you have made your pick, tag the user who needs to make their pick.

Each user has 24 hours in which to make their pick; only once those 24 hours are up can the person after them pick.

The final user to pick in every odd-numbered round also has the immediate next pick in the odd round that follows it.

Overall Pick #1: Graeme Pollock
3c324-1532533227-800.jpg

Profile
When you think of left-handed cricketers, there are two who immediately spring to mind. It is fair to say, however, that neither of them is Graeme Pollock. His legacy has been to some extent forgotten as a result of South Africa's sporting isolation which what should have been his finest years as a Test batsman, yet between the ages of 19 and 26 the tall left-hander had already cemented his place as one of his country's finest ever cricketing products. Another reason that he has been comparatively forgotten is that where so many of his compatriots chose to ply their cricketing trade overseas in the County Championship and Sheffield Shield, Pollock opted to remain in the Currie Cup playing for Eastern Province then Transvaal, while also playing with distinction in the Rebel Tests.

Statistics
| | Left-handed batsman | Leg-break bowler *|
Tests|23 matches|2,256 runs @ 60.97 (7 centuries, best 274)|4 wickets @ 51.00 (best 2/50)|17 catches
Rebel "Tests"|16 matches|1,376 runs @ 65.52 (5 centuries, best 197)|(unsure)|(unsure)
First-class|262 matches|20,940 runs @ 54.67 (64 centuries, best 274)|43 wickets @ 47.95 (best 3/46)|248 catches
Finest Performance
When a 22-year-old Graeme Pollock strode out to the crease against Australia at Cape Town at the start of 1967, his team was in real trouble: 12 for two in reply to Australia's monumental 542 and with Graham McKenzie (why don't we hear more about him?) bowling like the wind. The South African batting line-up provided little resistance with only two batsmen finishing with double-figure scores. The true outlier here was Graeme Pollock, whose near six-hour 209 contributed 59.2% of South Africa's 353 all out, which by today's laws would have been enough to avoid the follow-on and raise hopes of saving a draw. This did not occur, because South Africa were made to follow-on despite a deficit of only 189.

Aislabie's Southpaws so far:
