Nick Statham
He was a truely great player whose stats make you feel whether he was a bowler; especially his List-A average of 6.88 is a shame for a player who played a total of 21 List A matches ( incl 3 ODIs) with highest score of only 37.

He played just 3 ODIs (why?) and scored 7 runs at 2.33 with S/R of 14 hitting not even a single boundary in all the 50 balls he played in these 3 matches. I can't imagine how no one picked him! (@Aislabie )

:wi:/:usa: Xavier Marshall :bat:

A somewhat heightened average of 17.54 due to his single ton being not out. Not made a score of 50 before or since. Throw in some drugs cheating and a switch of allegiance and 25 caps and he rounds my side of nicely.

Overall Pick #77: Indika de Saram
upload_2019-12-2_21-19-54.png

Profile
The final member of my XI is the only one who is to bat slightly out of position: he was selected to bat at number five, below the powerhouse top four of Jayasuriya, Gunawardene, Atapattu and Jayawardene. However, I don't feel it to be farfetched, or playing an unrealistic role, if I put him at number four in a team with slightly less batting talent available.

Saram's one-day international career was... not very good. Considering that his only job in the team was to bat (he has never been a bowler, and in true Sri Lankan fashion was selected only as a batsman despite being a competent wicket-keeper), one would expect better returns after fifteen matches than a best score of 38. And the intended aggressor managed less than a single boundary per game, striking at comfortably under 70 runs per hundred balls. His international career would eventually come to an end around eighteen months after his debut, apart from a solitary Twenty20 International eight years later. On that occasion he didn't bat, which meant that he contributed roughly the same in that department.

Statistics
ODIS - :bat: 183 runs @ 16.63, SR 67.77 (best 38) in 15 matches
LIST A - :bat: 4,553 runs @ 28.63, SR n/a (best 138) and :bwl: 11 wickets @ 43.90, econ 4.44 (best 2/5) in 183 matches

Role in the Team

Really, it's just Saram's job to be a proper batsman. There's not much sign of it from his international stats, but he might just be the most competent batsman in my team.

A final word on the team
As already demonstrated in the Josephat Ababu profile, this team has a combined bowling attack of 93.97 which is especially dreadful. Between them, they managed a grand total of 1,542 career runs at an average of 12.43. I'm very proud of how dreadful those numbers are.

Next Pick
I'll be autopicking @Bevab's team.

@Bevab's XI

  1. :pak: :bat: Sajid Ali
  2. :ber: :bat: Oliver Pitcher
  3. :sco: :bat: Omer Hussain
  4. :hkg: :bat: Chris Carter
  5. :wi: :bat: Floyd Reifer :c:
  6. :uae: :ar: Arshad Laeeq
  7. :zim: :bwl: Stephen Peall
  8. :ind: :wk: Nayan Mongia
  9. :usa: :bwl: Rashid Zia
  10. :nzf: :bwl: Andrew Penn
  11. :ire: :bwl: Paul Mooney
Auto-Pick #37 - :ber: :bat: Oliver Pitcher
A truly dreadful opening batsman who was dreadfully outclassed at the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

Auto-Pick # 47 - :hkg: :bat: Chris Carter
A wicket-keeper who got picked as a batsman almost by accident as more and more Hong Kong players kept making themselves unavailable.

Auto-Pick #52 - :ire: :bwl: Paul Mooney
Brother of John; played four ODIs as a specialist bowler, took no wickets and conceded almost seven runs per over.

Auto-Pick #63 - :zim: :bwl: Stephen Peall

Incredibly ineffective spinner, and the fact that he has experience batting as high as number seven means that Gus Mackay somehow avoids getting picked into this side.

Auto-Pick #64 - :usa: :bwl: Rashid Zia
Another spinning non-option, but really pretty much any member of that United States team would do.

Auto-Pick #72 - :uae: :ar: Arshad Laeeq
I admit, he's maybe a bit too good of a batsman for this draft, but I really couldn't argue with his career bowling average of 198.

9. :ind: :bwl: Srinivas Venkataraghavan :c:
10. :ban: :bwl: Abul Hasan
11. :ken: :bwl: Josephat Ababu

:tick: This team is dreadful with both bat (combined average 12) and ball (combined average 91). Not a single batsman here has an ODI fifty, although there are a couple of 49s.
:tick: Of particular note is this team's lack of batting depth. The tail really does start at number five with Courtney Kruger, while Nkala and Esmeijer are both batting much higher than they would in better teams.
:x: The Josephat Ababu pick was maybe a bit of an error. There were definitely worse bowlers still available - guys like Paul Mooney - who would have allowed somebody like Brijal Patel to take a top-order batting spot.

9. :usa: :bwl: Rashid Zia
10. :nzf: :bwl: Andrew Penn
11. :ire: :bwl: Paul Mooney

:tick: An objectively bad side here: nobody in the top seven has an ODI fifty, and that's never a recipe for success. Hopefully it'd leave too big of a mess for Mongia to clear up.
:tick: Good lord the bowling. It's absolutely awful. It comes to something when Stephen Peall is the absolute bowling front-line attacking option but what a terrible attack.
:x: Nayan Mongia also doesn't belong in this draft, but honestly the biggest issue is that @Bevab didn't pick it himself. Hopefully this isn't due to anything real-life serious.

7. :wi: :wk: Carlton Baugh
8.:ind: :bwl: Salil Ankola
9. :eng: :bwl: Shaun Udal
10. :saf: :bwl: Monde Zondeki
11. :ban: :bwl: Anisur Rahman

:tick: Joe Harris for captain was an outstanding choice. He may have captained Canada to their first-ever captain over a Full Member, but that doesn't mean he was very good at cricket.
:tick: Unlike a lot of other sides, there's nobody in this one who was an obvious throwaway pick to get the cap count up, and that's a credit.
:x: If anything though, you should have aimed a little lower. Evan Gray, Shaun Udal and Monde Zondeki were all pretty competent in their short ODI careers, and competence is not what we look for here!

8. :zim: :ar: Prosper Utseya
9. :wi: :bwl: Marlon Black
10. :aus: :bwl: Ray Bright
11. :sri: :bwl: Granville de Silva

:tick: Your nine-ten-jack all happened to be completely ineffective bowlers. Like, completely. That's a remarkably big dent in a team's effectiveness.
:tick: You got one of my main targets: Stuart Poynter is an actually dreadful example of an international cricketer (and yes, I'm a biased Ireland fan)
:x: So, how to put this... Ashraful, de Grooth, Anwar and Utseya. Well, they're all pretty good cricketers. None of them should be in this draft to be honest.

8.:ind: :bwl: Suru Nayak
9.:nzf: :bwl: Murphy Sua
10. :can::bwl: Barry Seebaran
11. :eng: :bwl: James Kirtley

:tick: Aasif Karim is in absolute nosebleed territory there in the top five. Turns out he actually did bat there once for Kenya but good lord he shouldn't have done.
:tick: Relying on Xavier Marshall to play the anchor role won't work at all (although I never expected a guy with an ODI best of 157 not out to get picked here)
:x: Rod. Bloody. Marsh. He has no place in this draft, and though you pointed at his batting stats even they were far better than those of his keeping peers.

@El Loco

1. :zim: :bat: Cephas Zhuwao
2. :nep: :bat: Anil Sah
3. :can: :bat: Trevin Bastiampillai
4. :sri: :bat: Chamara Kapugedera :c:
5. :ban: :bat: Al Sahariar

8. :ind: :ar: Bharat Arun
9. :nam: :bwl: Burton van Rooi
10. :ned: :bwl: Berend Westdijk
11. :ire: :bwl: Gary Kidd

:tick: A spectacularly weak bowling line-up; Tony Suji is the absolute spearhead with his 21 wickets as the other four bowlers have only one wicket each. Very few of them really looked like taking more either.
:tick: They will also be poorly-led by Kapugedera, the captain so clueless he forgot what he was meant to do on the short walk from the team warm-up to the middle for the toss.
:x: Honestly, by the standards of this draft that batting is pretty strong. Specialist batsmen down to five and a couple of them (Zhuwao and particularly Kapugedera) have proven themselves decently competent.

@Sinister One

1. :sco: :bat: Navdeep Poonia
2. :ned: :bat: Nick Statham
3. :can: :ar: Nicholas Ifill
4. :ber: :bat: James Celestine
5. :ire: :bat: Peter Gillespie
6. :ban: :ar: Naimur Rahman :c:
7. :ind: :ar: Sairaj Bahutule
8. :sri: :wk: Pubudu Dassanayake
9. :nzf: :ar: Dipak Patel
10. :png: :bwl: Damien Ravu
11. :zim: :bwl: Pommie Mbangwa

:tick: The batting order is absolutely not up to scratch here, which is a credit to your selection especially as you picked several of them quite late in the draft. It comes to something when James Celestine is the second-best of your top five.
:tick: There's also a distinct lack of bowling in this side; Ravu, Rahman and Pommie Mbangwa all turned out to be improbably poor in ODIs compared to other formats.
:x: Dipak Patel played a very central role in the Kiwis' revolutionary ODI side, and was an excellent containing spinner. Additionally, captaincy brought the best out of Naimur's batting.

= = = = =

So, if I were ranking these teams from strongest to weakest:
  1. @DalePlaysSports
  2. @CerealKiller
  3. @Bigby Wolf ( stronger)
  4. @El Loco
  5. @Bevab ( weaker)
  6. @Sinister One
  7. @Aislabie
The bottom three teams are, in my opinion, more or less equally weak. That does make for a very tricky decision on who to vote for; I probably won't vote for Bevab, simply because it's not entirely his own team. So it will, for me at least, come down to whether or not I feel comfortable voting for myself.

Regardless, there's the rundown of all the teams!

I'd also like some feedback on draft ideas for after the New Year. What kinds of things would you be more interested in, and which are more of a not-so-much?

Draft Ideas

Teenage Test Cricketers

Players can only be selected based on their performances in Test cricket whilst still (to the best of our knowledge) a teenager.

Three Strikes Draft

Basically a no-holds-barred draft with the exception of being able to sacrifice three of your picks in order to get rid of an opponent's player. This would be a very tactical draft, because nobody wants to let their opponent get Bradman, but nobody wants to be first to use up their strikes either.

Mediocre XI
This would be a draft that would need a tournament: the goal here would be to make the most average team possible. So, if there were to be five participants then the goal would be to make the third-best team.

Budget Draft
The goal here would be to create the best team you can on a budget. Maybe you have to select a Test XI, but whose batting averages added together make no more than 200? Or else the best side you can with no more than 100 caps between them.

Incognito Draft
In this draft, each participant would have to pick a team that conforms to a different rule but they'd have to do it without letting on to everyone else about what they were doing. As well as making their picks, participants can earn extra points by guessing other people's rules - but they can only make one guess per round. (I'd explain that in more detail if this were to happen)

Chain Draft
Any player selected must have played with or against the last player picked in a Test match. So if we wanted to change eras, we'd have to work together to make it happen.

All-Time National Draft
An all-time draft for a certain country, like the all-time England XI that I ran before.

All-Time League Draft
An all-time draft for a certain league (BBL, IPL, County Championship, etc) but selected teams must meet the same standards for team composition as in real life.

Other ideas
If you have other ideas, feel free to suggest them. Also feel free to use any of these ideas, except the Teenage Test Cricketers, as I'm thinking that's my most likely next draft.[DOUBLEPOST=1575498177][/DOUBLEPOST]

That's quite alright, it happens to us all. I could have picked far better/worse players than Surkari, but I'd decided from miles out that he was my target just because of that Shaun Tait moment.

Fair assessments all-round. I think we all started getting the gist of what actually defined a bad cricketer at the around the mid stages of the thread. Yet another great draft.

This ones a cracking idea.

Think a few of my picks would've been more eligible for this one lol. A bit more of a laid-back one that would require less effort I think.[DOUBLEPOST=1575499257][/DOUBLEPOST]

Was actually going to pick him over Zhuwao but decided against it for that very reason.
