PCB-BCB reach agreement on upcoming series

• Bangladesh to play two Tests, one ODI and three T20Is in Pakistan

Lahore, 14 January 2020:

The Chairman and Chief Executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board today reached consensus with the Bangladesh Cricket Board on the upcoming series, which will be part of the Future Tours Programme. The process was facilitated by the International Cricket Council Chairman Shashank Manohar in Dubai on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the revised arrangement, Bangladesh will play three T20Is in Lahore from 24-27 January.

They will return to Pakistan for the first ICC World Test Championship fixture, to be held from 7-11 February in Rawalpindi.

Post the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, which concludes in Lahore on 22 March, Bangladesh will visit Pakistan again and will play an ODI in Karachi on 1 April and second ICC World Test Championship fixture from 5-9 April.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani said: “I am pleased that we have amicably achieved a resolution that is in the best interest of this great sport as well as both the proud cricket playing countries. I also want to thank ICC Chairman Shaskank Manohar for the leadership he provided and ensured the sport continues to grow and thrive in the two countries.”

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan, who also attended Tuesday’s meeting at the ICC headquarters, said: “It is a win-win outcome for both the boards. I am glad that the uncertainty around the series is now over and we can start planning for the smooth delivery of the matches. Bangladesh will visit Pakistan thrice, which should give them the comfort that Pakistan is as safe and secure as any other cricket playing country.

“The split series across three venues will also provide fans and followers to watch live in action their favourite players and support good cricket from either side.”

BCB President Nazmul Hassan, MP said: “I must thank the PCB for understanding our position. We are pleased that a mutually acceptable resolution has been reached and this is a prime example our sincere efforts at respecting the ICC FTP commitments.

Tour schedule:

24 Jan – 1st T20I, Lahore
25 Jan – 2nd T20I, Lahore
27 Jan – 3rd T20I, Lahore
7-11 Feb – 1st Test, Rawalpindi
1 Apr – One-off ODI, Karachi
5-9 Apr – 2nd Test, Karachi

So finally after so much uncertainty the tour is confirmed. Kudos to Wasim Khan and Ehsan Mani for staying patient despite so much opposition. Even though, it is not the best to have a tour in 3 legs, it is still a great news for cricket starved Pakistani fans. PCB has also managed to get an extra ODI too. I am really looking forward to the series and hoping to go to one of the T20I in Lahore.

By the way, having not played any competitive cricket myself, I am not sure how this split test series would work. Some people have said that the momentum will be broken, and it would not be great for the players. Your opinions on it?

Absolutely correct! There is no guarantee that Bangladesh or even Sri Lanka would stay in Pakistan for an entire month. I don't think that this deal has happened and even if it has then it is still good. There can be another possibility that Pakistan might tour Bangladesh in mid April as both the teams' schedule is empty at that time. I would be over the moon if the latter happens. Pakistan and Bangladesh have played very competitive cricket in recent times.

I hope that we don't see many players pulling out of the tour like when SL toured last year for LOIs.

23 Bangladeshi players registered themselves in Pakistan Super League 2020 Draft, knowing that they would have to stay in Pakistan, for 1 entire month in 4 different cities. The names are: Mahmudullah, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman, Tamim Iqbal, Abul Hasan, Afif Hossain, Al Amin Hossain, Alok Kapali, Aminul Islam, Liton Das, Mehdy Hasan Miraz, Mohammad Mithun, Mosaddek Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Abu Hider Rony, Anamul Haque Bijoy, Farhad Reza, Imrul Kayes, Muktar Ali, Sabbir Rehman and Saif Hasan. Of the 12 players who played in the T20Is against India, 8 signed up for the PSL draft. That's most of their T20I team. An anonymous 'test specialist' has told the media that he will go to Pakistan but he wants to stay anonymous for the time being. Mashrafe Mortaza has also said that he would have gone to Pakistan but it is yet to see if he will be in the team after his poor World Cup and last few other games. But, Mushfiqur Rahim has shown 'zero interest' in going to Pakistan and has already told the board in writing that he will not go. I am hoping for the best!

Pakistan has announced the T20 squad for series against Bangladesh:

Babar Azam (C)
Ahsan Ali
Amad Butt
Haris Rauf
Iftikhar Ahmed
Imad Wasim
Khushdil Shah
Mohammad Hafeez
Mohammad Hasnain
Mohammad Rizwan (WK)
Musa Khan
Shadab Khan
Shaheen Shah Afridi
Shoaib Malik
Usman Qadir

Good team overall. Amad Butt and Haris Rauf have finally got a chance. I am really looking forward to Amad Butt as he is a big name in the domestic circuit. He bowls end 130s and is a hard hitting all-rounder. He is extremely fit too. Ahsan Ali is more suited to ODI but him opening with Babar in T20 would be interesting.

Bowling specifically fast bowling is very thin in experience. Musa, Hasnain are raw and Amad would be playing his first series.

Haris Sohail, Asif Ali, Wahab, Fakhar, Imam, Irfan and Amir have been dropped. Your thoughts?

Perception is a big thing. It is changing slowly but will take atleast a decade to be completely fine.

MCC is coming next month captained by Kumar Sangakkara. The same man who was in the Sri Lankan team bus during the dreadful attack in 2009. Ireland is also ready, South Africa is also seriously interested. ICC's CE is coming later this month to Pakistan to discuss Pakistan hosting a ICC flagship event during the next FTP 2023-2031, which is an absolutely huge thing for cricket starved Pakistan. Wasim Khan (PCB's Chief Executive) has strong relations in ECB and because of him MCC is coming. He is also trying to get a couple of counties visiting Pakistan.

Pakistan is now much safer than it was in 2006-2008. South Africa, India, West Indies, England (2005) all toured in between that time. It will surely improve but will take a few years.

Don't think any big name did, other than Mushfiqur Rahim of course.
That is a very good squad. They will surely miss Mushfiqur Rahim and ofcouse Shakib al Hassan. The major setback will be that they are playing without their some of their coaching staff.

Bangladesh batting coach Neil McKenzie and fielding coach Ryan Cook had withdrawn from the series whereas, the board decided to pass up spin coach Daniel Vettori for the short series.

Furthermore, team analyst Shrinivaas Chandrasekaran will not be part of the upcoming series due to his Indian nationality while strength and conditioning coach Mario Villavarayan will also be absent on account of a fractured hand.

If this series is a part of the Test Championship, Bangladesh might be shooting themselves in the foot here.
