The year is 1975, and the MCC has announced that England will play host to the first ever Cricket World Cup, a Gillette Cup style knockout competition between sixteen of the best cricketing countries in the world today, as invited by the MCC.

There are four teams (Australia, England, Pakistan and West Indies) who have been seeded so that they cannot meet one another before the semi-finals. Beyond that, the draw is completely open and random, and will be held very shortly.

The sixteen teams invited for this first-ever competition are:

So, now all the teams have arrived for the competition it's time for the draw.

Here we have two buckets of balls. The first contains the four seeds:
1 - Australia
2 - England
3 - Pakistan
4 - West Indies

The second contains the remaining twelve teams:
5 - Bangladesh
6 - Bermuda
7 - Canada
8 - Denmark
9 - East Africa
10 - India
11 - Ireland
12 - New Zealand
13 - Rhodesia
14 - Scotland
15 - Sri Lanka
16 - Wales

And so, with all the admin out of the way, it's time to start the draw.

The first pick will be from the seeded bucket, and it is number three -
20px-Flag_of_Pakistan.svg.png
Pakistan
.

The next three picks will be from the unseeded bucket. The first of them is number eight -
20px-Flag_of_Denmark.svg.png
Denmark
- a straightforward draw for Pakistan in the first round.

Next up we have number six -
20px-Flag_of_Bermuda_%281910%E2%80%931999%29.svg.png
Bermuda
.

And facing them will be number fourteen -
20px-Flag_of_Scotland_%281542-2003%29.svg.png
Scotland
. They have been coming off second-best lately against the Irish in their annual clash, but should still be favourites against Bermuda.

Up next we have the second of our seeded teams: number one -
20px-Flag_of_Australia_%28converted%29.svg.png
Australia
.

Their first-round match will be against number seven -
20px-Flag_of_Canada_%28Pantone%29.svg.png
Canada
. This is a fascinating fixture, because the Australians recently lost against an Eastern Canada XI just a couple of months ago.

The remaining match in the top half of the draw will first see number five -
20px-Flag_of_Bangladesh.svg.png
Bangladesh
.

And they'll be up against number eleven -
20px-Green_flag_of_Ireland.svg.png
Ireland
. The Irish will really fancy their chances here in familiar conditions.

There are now only two seeded teams left; which will we see first? It's number four -
20px-WestIndiesCricketFlagPre1999.svg.png
West Indies
.

And they will be up against number sixteen -
20px-Flag_of_Wales_%281959%E2%80%93present%29.svg.png
Wales
. A really tough first-round fixture here, as this will be a Welsh team full of county players.

So who will be vying to face almost-certainly the West Indies in the quarter-finals? How about number ten -
20px-Flag_of_India.svg.png
India
?

Assuming of course that they can get past number fifteen -
20px-Flag_of_Sri_Lanka.svg.png
Sri Lanka
! A brutal quarter of the draw here; whichever team reaches the semis from here will really have earned it.

Now of course there's only one seeded team left: number two -
20px-Flag_of_England.svg.png
England
. The host nation.

Their first match will be against number thirteen -
20px-Flag_of_Rhodesia_%281968%E2%80%931979%29.svg.png
Rhodesia
. A couple of upsets here could be very interesting indeed, as there is talk of the West Indies being prepared to boycott a game against Rhodesia owing to their close ties with the Apartheid regime in South Africa.

All of which means we know the last two teams in the draw: number nine -
20px-Flag_of_the_East_African_Community.svg.png
East Africa
...

And number twelve -
20px-Flag_of_New_Zealand.svg.png
New Zealand
. There really should be only one winner of this game, unless Basher Hassan has a career day for the Africans.

Thank you all for joining us for a fascinating draw.

Pakistan will be relishing a particularly easy road to the semi-final, especially compared to their near-neighbours India, who are in by far the toughest quarter of the draw. It's difficult to see who if anybody will have the firepower to take down one of the seeded teams, but we've all been wrong before.

Pakistan vs Denmark
World Cup, Match 1 at Lord's

The first game of the first ever World Cup proved to be just as one-sided as people were worried that it might be, as seeded team Pakistan demolished ODI debutants Denmark with considerable ease. Playing on a two-paced Lord's pitch, Denmark surprised everyone by choosing to bat first after winning the toss. It was a positive move considering that everyone expected them to get rolled, and one which ultimately didn't pay off.

The Pakistani pace attack had the top four Danish batsmen back in the pavilion before the Europeans had reached double figures, and from there it was always going to be an uphill task to recover against one of the very best bowling attacks in the world. Despite this, Klaus Buus managed to put together a counterattacking 34 at better than a run a ball before becoming Sarfraz Nawaz's third and final victim. After that, a few partnerships in the teens managed to drag Denmark over the 100 mark, but it was never going to be enough to pose a big challenge for the Pakistanis.

For some time it looked as though Sadiq Mohammad and Majid Khan would likely reach the 120-run target without losing a wicket, but ultimately both would fall: Khan to Henrik Mortensen and Mohammad to Hans Sorensen. While that was never likely to be enough to worry Zaheer Abbas - and indeed it didn't - it was enough that Denmark could leave the toughest game they'd ever played with their heads held pretty high.

The Danish batsmen had never faced anything quite like Imran Khan or Sarfraz Nawaz before.

Bermuda vs Scotland
World Cup, Match 2 at Edgbaston

Before the game, most would have expected Scotland to be favourites owing to their experience playing first-class cricket against Ireland and, in some cases, for county teams. Despite this, Bermuda were not to be underestimated with the likes of Sheridan Raynor and Clarence Parfitt in their ranks.

After Scotland won the toss and batted, it was Walter Trott and not Parfitt who posed them early problems. After Hamish More and Richard Rodger both tried and failed to get on top of the bowling, things looked a little precarious at 42 for three. Of course, Essex stalwart Brian Hardie had no intentions of letting the game get out of his grasp, but he needed support from the other end and a distinct lack of it allowed Bermuda to keep taking wickets. At 93 for six, it was looking pretty dicey, but Hardie was still there and had the experienced Jimmy Allan to keep him company. Thanks to their early resolve, they were able to make the most of lesser bowlers like Eldon Raynor in their 73-run partnership. Hardie would end up staying at the crease until the end of the innings, but fell cruelly short of a century on his One-Day International debut.

Of course 231 was a big target, but not too big for Sheridan Raynor if he got going - the man good enough that he would have been playing for the West Indies, but for the fact that Bermudians aren't eligible to do so. Except two balls into the innings, he was gone - out to John Clark. With him gone, and even more so once Dennis Wainwright's full-throttle cameo had ended after just 21 balls, the Scots were strong favourites in the game. And so it proved: there just wasn't anyone that really bowled badly, and by the time they'd reduced their opponents to 140 for seven the game was theirs.

Pakistan v Scotland should be an interesting game.

Essex's own Scotsman proved too good for Bermuda to handle.

Australia vs Canada
World Cup, Match 3 at Headingley

Of course, one would only ever expect there to be one winner of an Australia-Canada cricket match, but for most of this Australian eleven (and equally for their Canadian opponents), the Australians' defeat mere months ago at the hands of an Eastern Canada team would have been rather fresh in the memory. Certainly they are not a team to be underestimated, being particularly blessed in the realm of spin bowling.

And so it proved: none of the Australian top-order could really get the game under control as none of the top five could better Greg Chappell's score of 20 thanks to the accurate swing bowling of Richard Stevens. With Australia at a scarcely believable 77 for five, the Canadians were starting to believe again. It fell to Ross Edwards to at least partially snuff out that dream, and he guided the Australians up past the 200 mark with a well-compiled 67 from only 76 balls. Surely a target of 207 would be out of reach against one of the world's mightiest pace attacks?

Well, yes it was. Dennis Lillee and Max Walker took three each of the first six wickets to fall. Unlike Australia, the Canadian tail had no real pretensions with the bat, so a recovery from 86 for six was always going to be unlikely. The Canadians ultimately fell 70 runs short of their target, but can take great pride in how they performed against one of the world's best teams.

Ross Edwards averted a potential disaster for Australia.

Bangladesh vs Ireland
World Cup, Match 4 at Old Trafford

Perhaps the best match on paper of the entire top half of the draw sees newly independent Bangladesh take on Ireland for the chance to face Australia in the Quarter Finals. Though many of the Bangladesh team have experience from playing first-class cricket when the area was still East Pakistan, there can can be no escaping the turbulence that the recent independence struggle will have brought to all of their lives. They're up against an Irish team that always flattens Scotland, who themselves overturned Bermuda earlier in the round.

If the Irish have a stronger suit, it isn't really their batting, and this showed against Bangladesh. Only three of their number made it into double figures, but the ones who did played with great abandon. Jack Short and Simon Corlett both made entertaining cameos of 33 and 26 respectively, but the man who absolutely stole the show was Ivan Anderson. Hitting nine fours and three impressive sixes, he made the first century of the World Cup by any batsman before eventually being caught out on the boundary by Daulat Zaman off the bowling of Abdul Latif. The Bangladesh attack was perhaps a little over-reliant on its three leg-spinners: though great when things are going their way, there's always a bad ball and Anderson in particular made them look very samey.

In reply, Bangladesh needed an Anderson of their own, but the closest they could find was Mohammad Sadiq. Trying to work with Abdul Latif to rebuild an innings already blown to bits by Alec O'Riordan, scoring proved slow and difficult. As the asking rate climbed ever higher, any attempt to accelerate usually brought about a wicket for the Irish left-armer. Ultimately, Sadiq had to settle for a personal half-century as the winning line was just too far away for his team.

West Indies vs Wales
World Cup, Match 5 at Trent Bridge

It is the misfortune of a knockout draw that a Welsh team with a better team than some of those who have already qualified for the Quarter-Finals will have arrived at Trent Bridge knowing full-well that they stood almost no chance against the mighty West Indies team, laden as it is with fast bowlers and explosive batsmen.

Having won the toss and chosen to bowl, the West Indies tore right into the Welsh batting. In just the second over of the game, Keith Boyce set the tone by removing two of Wales' top three batsmen. For a while, the fourth wicket partnership of 53 between John Hopkins and a motivated Alan Jones provided some respite, but once that was broken only one more man (Malcolm Nash with 11) would break double figures. With only just over 30 overs passed, Hopkins ran out of partners on a fine unbeaten 56.

With so modest a target to chase, the West Indies never once looked troubled. The best moment for Wales was the warm round of applause granted to Jeff Jones, as fans still remember him fondly from his Glamorgan and England days. Try as he might though, he couldn't roll back the years. Nobody could, and Clive Lloyd was never even required to strap his pads on. There will doubtless be a sterner challenge for the West Indies in the Quarters, but there can be no sterner challenge than the one which Wales faced today.

Even the one-off comeback to international cricket of Jeff Jones was but a sideshow to the West Indies team.

Canada bowled really well...
They did! Most of those bowlers were the guys who bowled Australia out for 150 in Toronto that May, so I rated them accordingly. Although it also ought to be noted that this was a very hungover Australian side, as the chairman of the Toronto Cricket Club had put them all up in his house and held a huge party for them the night before the game.

INDIA vs SRI LANKA
World Cup, Match 6 at The Oval

In what promised to be the closest contest of the World Cup's first round, India and Sri Lanka descended on London and brought their fans with them in force. Though neither side looks likely to progress to the semi-finals, seeing as they'll have to go past the mighty West Indies to get there, there are still high stakes: a win here from Sri Lanka or even a strong enough performance, will advance their case for Test cricket in the near future.

The Sri Lankans won the toss and chose to bat first, and their opening pair set off to a flying start. Sunil Wettimuny and Ranjit Fernando made the Indian bowlers look thoroughly ordinary as Sri Lanka got well ahead of the game. Their charge was briefly halted by a couple of quick wickets, but Duleep Mendis picked up the mantle and started playing shots of his own. It took a great deal of experience to bring India back into the game: captain Srinivas Venkataraghavan and his bowling colleagues turned their focus from taking wickets to just tying up the scoring. It was a tactic that worked adequately for them, as David Heyn ate up nearly ten overs all by himself, and Sri Lanka finished on 237: a commanding target, but an attainable one.

It was a target that would call for a highly skilled hand to take them there. That was provided by Sunil Gavaskar, who stood tall in a real pressure situation. He eased his way past 50 and kept on going, even as his batting partners found new ways of getting in then getting out again. For as long as he was there, India were just about in control of the game - but Bandula Warnapura did brilliantly to draw a false shot from him, and he was caught in the covers. That left Armanath and Engineer with a job to do, but the closer it got to the winning post the shakier the Indian batsmen looked. With only a handful of runs needed from the last over it was India's to lose but against all the odds they did. By one run. The closest match in one-day international history.

A flying start from Sunil Wettimuny and Ranjit Fernando gave India a huge task that they weren't quite up to.
