Just like ECB with the Hundred, CSA is launching a new game format, known as 3TC. However, this is a much much bigger change than just changing no. of balls in a match.

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/...-team-format-kick-south-africa-return-cricket

Some of the new rules :-
  • Three teams of 8 players will play in one match
  • Total of 36 overs in a match, divided into 2 halves of 18 overs.
  • Each team takes turns in batting / fielding / being out of the field. 6 overs batting in each half for each team
  • Last man standing allowed, can score only even runs.
The first match is on 27th June.

They have launched a website, on which the match would be streamed (most probably). A person has to sign up there in order to do so...

I'm not saying that i won't be fun to watch, it just isn't cricket... but at the same time what is cricket? i mean me playing in the backyard with 3 of my buddies with a bat and ball we call that cricket, so I suppose this can be cricket. I am just not a huge fan of all these ways to change what has worked on over a hundered years, but i could be proven wrong.

I doubt it will become anything more than a gimmick for now and as a one-off it isn't the worst thing to have in the world albeit you might have wanted the rules to be simpler for any potentially new fans gained during the current pandemic.

It has piqued my interest as this is something unheard of. The timing couldn't have been better. Let's see how it pans out.

If you're taking the last hundred years then we've had changes to test cricket, ODI (multiple varieties and gimmicks) and T20, probably a bunch of other stuff and sixes. I see this probably fitting in with the latter.

Sounds like something to kick start sport again and it could be interesting.

See, I came up with a "three-way cricket" idea back when I was about eight years old.

I don't have my old notes anymore, but I do remember that it was nine players per team, and sixteen overs per side - maximum four per bowler. You'd have one fielding team, one bowling team and one batting team, and the bowlers who were in use at the time made up the tenth and eleventh fielders. Honestly it's not my favourite concept now, but back when I was a kid I must have used dice to simulate a good 100 to 200 of these games with my own strange "3CC World IX" which off the top of my head included:

1. :aus: :bat: Michael Hussey
2. :nzf: :bat: Jamie How
3. :zim: :bat: Chamu Chibhabha
4. :eng: :bat: David Sales
5. :nzf: :ar: Jacob Oram
6. :eng: :wk: Chris Read
7. :eng: :ar: Me :c:
8. :ned: :bwl: Bas Zuiderent *
9. :eng: :bwl: James Kirtley *

R. :aus: :bat: Phil Jaques
R. :eng: :bat: Dominic Clapp *
R. :eng: :bwl: Jason Lewry *
R. :eng: :bwl: Jason Brown

* A lot of my early cricketing knowledge was based around a long-standing Sussex save I ran on Cricket Captain 2002. One notable thing about Cricket Captain 2002 is that for some reason, Bas Zuiderent was listed as a strangely effective medium-pace bowler. Unfortunately this does mean that a lot of my "World IX" all played for Sussex at the same time.

I'm fully aware of how weird a list of favourite cricketers that is for any age, let alone an eight-year-old. My only defence is that I used to really like TransWorld Sport and ICC Cricket World back when they used to be on telly.

I do kinda like the idea that even I knew it would never catch on and I mostly filled the teams with unmarketable players because they'd be the only ones available.

How many people watching it ?

The format is very much engrossing and certainly could attract the crowds in large numbers. I had my heart in the mouth when I saw that Shamsi ball which nearly got out De Villiers for 1(2). The Kingfisher's were unfortunate to miss out on Markram's wicket but the fielder was a little late to make the jump. Hope we get to see some AB special today maybe in the 2nd half.
