There are plenty of drafts going on with complicated ways of selecting your teams, so I thought I'd go with a more "pure" kind of draft. Just an old-fashioned ordered draft where you're picking your own team. There are only two rules:
  • Nobody in your team can have played more than one Test innings at an average of over 40.
  • Nobody in your team can have taken more than one Test wicket at an average of under 30.
This means no Sanath Jayasuriya (batting average of 40.07) and no Graeme Swann (bowling average of 29.96). You've got to look for players who might have outperformed their career numbers.

Enjoy!

Test stats - 8,463 runs @ 39.54 (15 centuries, best 190) in 133 matches
First-class stats - 26,165 runs @ 40.06 (48 centuries, best 271*) in 447 matches

Batting VARP (opener - specialist only) - +31.96%

Alec Stewart was one of the best opening batsmen of his generation, averaging 46.70 as a specialist batsman throughout his Test career. The thing that stood between Stewart's greatness as an opening batsman and his chances of being remembered for it was his absolute dedication to the needs of his team. He turned himself into a high-class wicketkeeper mostly so that England could squeeze an extra batsman into their fragile team. When splitting his duties behind and in front of the stumps, he averaged more than ten runs fewer per innings, which ultimately dragged his career average a shade under 40.

Don't let his average of 39 fool you. Victor Trumper is one of the all-time greats. He was the most stylish and versatile batsman of the Golden Age of cricket, a batsman capable of incredible feats on wickets so treacherous that his contemporaries found them unplayable. This is also the reason for his relatively low average.

Vinoo Mankad

Statistics
Tests:- 2109 runs @ 31.47 (5 100s, Best 231) and 162 wickets @ 32.32 (8 5WI, 2 10WM, BBI 8/52, BBM 13/131) in 44 test matches
First Class:- 11591 runs @ 34.70 (26 100s, Best 231) and 782 wickets @ 24.53 (38 5WI, 9 10WM, BBI 8/35) in 233 matches

Arguably, the greatest spin bowling all rounder India has ever produced. While his stats don't say much, it must be seen that he played in a weak Indian team which won only 5 of the 44 matches he played in. His all round prowess was shown in the Lord's test in 1952 when he made 72 and 184 while batting, and bowled 97 overs in the match taking 5 for 231. In the second innings, he went straight into bat, just after bowling 31 overs that day.

I shall go with :aus:Clem Hill, who has a batting average of 39.21 and is the highest run-scorer of the pre World War I era. Hill was another 'victim' of the rough playing conditions of his time which resulted in his comparatively low average (the average runs per wicket was around 26 in this era, for comparison the 1920s and 1930s all had averages well above 30). Those who watched him have no doubt over his immense ability though and many argue that he was better than his compatriot Trumper who was aesthetically more pleasing without any doubt. He was excellent on the hard pitches of his country and revelled in back foot punches that were blessed with superb placement and also the power required to score at the pace he often did. One of the quickest run-scorers in test history, he shall bat at three and use his excellent footwork and powerful strokes to tackle any bowler.
