Australia tour of Pakistan - October 1998/9 - Tour Preview

Schedule:

3 day match v Pakistan A at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
1st Test v Pakistan at Rawalpindi
3 day match v PCB XI at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad
2nd Test v Pakistan at Peshawar
3rd Test v Pakistan at National Stadium, Karachi

Pakistan Pitches 1988-1998

Rawalpindi wickets can often be slow paced but usually favour the batsmen except for some first session help for the quickies and sometimes some turn for the spinners on the final day. Sheikhupura has a similar reputation, slow and low wickets, producing plenty of runs but at a slow scoring rate, there have also been occasions when the pitch is poorly prepared and below Test standard. Faisalabad has developed into a fast bowlers wicket often giving the seamers real help on the first morning but sometimes assisting sheer pace throughout the match. Peshawar can sometimes favour the batsmen for a couple of days before turning difficult, on other occasions the quick bowlers are assisted for the first day or so and batting becomes easier thereafter. The wicket can also break up here so the spinners may find help late in the match. Batting is usually easiest on the opening day at the National Stadium Karachi but the pace is often slow and the bounce low. The spinners often have a real chance late in the match. Lahore is also kinder to batsmen than bowlers often the wicker is near perfect for batting but it can also be slow paced. There are more runs to be had at Sialkot where the wicket is often slow and with a low bounce but of little or no help to the bowlers. The Defence Stadium at Karachi usually offers good batting wickets sometimes so good that any result other than a draw is unlikely. In sharp contrast Gujranwala will almost always offer a more evenly balanced contest, often with the bowlers coming off best. Seamers sometimes have a chance here.

Please choose your XI for the following match bearing in mind the pitch and weather conditions and any injuries you may have:

Pakistan A v Australian XI - 3 day match - at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore - October 1998/9

Pitch: 103 - This looks like a good batting wicket and the batsmen should prosper for at least the first three days. Thereafter the bowlers may begin to get some assistance, with the spinners expected to benefit most.
Day 1 Starting Pitch: 2 - Good Batting Wicket
Day 1 Weather: 2 - Hot and Sunny

Unavailable: S.R.Waugh - Feeling unwell.

I have decided I will manage the Bangladesh side seeing is they are usually unpopular because I would really like to participate in the league and in particular play matches against an old friend who is signing up.
