Besides the fact that up until the South African mauling we were selecting guys who were in their mid 30's and wheeling out Shaun Marsh every couple of series. Cameron White was an international failure.

Does it need to be one extreme or the other? Only 35 year olds or rookies. Why can't guys in their physical and mental prime be given a chance? Sean Abbott for example. I feel sad for White in all honesty, he played in extremely tough circumstances and did reasonably well.

Sean Abbott has a career bowling average of 34 he should be nowhere near the test line up, that's a very odd nomination. Youth and potential gets a chance when current ability stocks are low.

Steve O'Keefe's bowling shouldn't come as a huge surprise: he averages 22 in first-class cricket on unhelpful Australian tracks, and now averages 20 in Tests on slightly more helpful wickets.

The only real surprise is that he's 32 years old and can still count his Test appearances on one hand.

Maxwell/Henriques/Cartwright/Wildermuth (long-term)

Pattinson/Lyon

I think this team can be really good in the future, and has the depth to adapt to different conditions. Within 2018-19, this could be a really strong team provided the players can retain their form and fitness.

I'd retain more or less the same team for ODIs too, with the exception of Lynn replacing Khawaja/Patterson, Finch in for Renshaw, Faulkner for Nevill and Zampa for Pattinson/Lyon. Head and Stoinis will be great options to have on the bench. Handscomb can keep wickets.
