Agree with that XI, instead I would actually play Jadhav instead of Iyer. I don't see Iyer as a significant big hitter who needs to provide the thrust at the bottom of the innings. Jadhav is no superstar too, but he can get the big hits going at the end better than Iyer. Except for that, the rest of your XI looks ideal.

That would get fixed if you get Raina in.

But he isnt selected in ODI's. I would any day play Raina over others. He brings the much needed stability.[DOUBLEPOST=1517378285][/DOUBLEPOST]I am pretty sure Dinesh Kartick will play though

If SA continue providing spicy wickets in the ODI series as well, we will be in for a really high quality series, one that might test FTBs like Dhawan and Nohit. I expect one or both of them to flop if the conditions. Although Rahane isn`t a good bet in modern high-scoring ODI scenarios, a batsman of his kind may be very useful in helpful bowling conditions. I doubt if SA will provide flat decks with the likes of Rabada, Ngidi, Morris and co in their lineup. Rahane would feature ahead of Jadhav/Karthik if that happens. My XI, depending on the conditions would be

Rohit
Dhawan/Rahane
Kohli
Dhoni
Karthik/Rahane/Jadhav
Pandey
Pandya
Bhuvi
Chahal/Kuldeep
Shami
Bumrah

Kohli has sounded out just now that Rahane is being looked at as a potential No. 4 in overseas ODI's and the World Cup next year. Which means Kohli is not going to dislodge the Rohit-Dhawan combination at the top. And it also means Kohli does not see MSD as a No.4 and wants MSD to bat lower which is not ideal for the current MSD who struggles to connect the big hits as well as he used to in his peak.

From all this, this could be India's ODI XI to start with:

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
Rahane
MSD
Kedar/Pandey
Hardik
Bhuvi
Kuldeep/Chahal
Shami
Bumrah

For Kohli, the ideal situation if he wants to help his good friend Rohit would be to have Rahane open the batting with Dhawan and Rohit to bat at No. 4. This will help Rohit not face the new ball in seaming/swinging conditions and thereby increase his chances of succeeding in tough conditions. He can go back to opening when India plays in subcontinent. Imagining Rohit and Dhawan opening the batting on a spicy pitch and in spicy conditions gives really bad feelers.

The problem with that is that Rohit (in ODIs) is a slow starter. If he comes into bat after 12-15 overs, it would mean a lot of dots in the middle overs, thereby increasing the pressure at the other end. He makes up for it once set, but you can't count on that every time.

Manish Pandey will make a huge impact at #4. Kohli should give him a chance. He is being wasted right now by drafting him at whichever position is vacant and moving his position regularly.

Ideally, I'd want both Rohit and Rahane to open but since both of them take time to get settled it would put the RR on the slower side early on which is why I'd to go to Dhawan. Pandey is an excellent top order batsman and has the playing style similar to Kohli (maybe not that much skill but their batting styles are similar) and its a waste to expect Pandey to start hitting big from the word go at #6 and #7. He's best suitable for #4. Him or Iyer can be the answer to the vacant #4 spot after Yuvi's gone from the ODI mix. In case there is a flurry of wickets MS can step up to #4. At #5, he can decide the pace of the innings. At #6 and #7, Kedar and Pandya can do the big hitting. Pacers select themselves. As for spinners, though I always supported Kuldeep right from his U-19 days, I feel if there's only one spot, Chahal is a better option as he reads the batsmen much better. Kuldeep of course will get better with experience.

Even I would go with this lineup. Pandya and Jadhav can bowl 5 overs each or more if one is bowling better than the other. This is the perfect lineup for me.

Off late we have struggled in ODI’s too away from home. Whatever the team might be as with Kohli you cannot guarantee a lineup, I just want a series win. With or without ABD in SaF lineup they still are pretty dangerous. Lets get the series win boys.

This is a very good XI but just that I am Rahane's fan and would love to see him play. But given that would be at the expense of Pandey, I think it won't happen. But reading Kohli's recent comments, I feel the lineup will be this:

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
Rahane
Dhoni
Jadhav
Pandya
Bhuvi
Shami
Chahal
Bumrah

I see that a lot of XI's have one wrist spinner. I would play both every single game.

I don't see anything wrong with Rahane art #4 or #2 in the ODI setup. He has a healthy strike rate of just below 80. Plus, once again, in overseas conditions he can be trusted to contribute and perform. I would trust him a lot more than Sharma and Dhawan in non-sub continental conditions

You are mistaken heavily then. Sharma and Dhawan are excellent white ball batters in any conditions. A SR of below 80 is 90's stuff and if you think that's okay then your mindset for limited overs is jaded. Just like Sharma is a misfit in tests, Rahane is a misfit in limited overs.

Suggest you take a look at Sharma and Dhawan's records in SENA in limited overs.
