Nice the second video shows the proper animation, and I can imagine syncing with the game really well.. Even on the run throw will be nice.. Even a trajectory line like it shows in the game for direct hit would be really good, so its not a perfect hit everytime..
Yep, I've thought for ages it'd be great for throwing in Ashes. Maybe have it so a trajectory line is linked to the ability of the players throw and accuracy. Perhaps in place of cooking/priming a grenade, which you can do for a a few seconds, you power up the throw or get a bit more precision - the longer you leave the better the throw but the less chance of getting that run out.

I really do think the sort of stuff we're talking about is potentially a big gameplay upgrade. Fielding has the potential to be as challenging and as much fun as batting and bowling, and it would prob change the way I played the game quite a bit.

I think eventually something along theses lines may happen because it's kind of the obvious place to go with it, but I'd be surprised if BA didn't have other priorities for the next game.

It's an interesting video and nice to hear Ross being quite candid about the process. I think the 80% quality for 10% the budget is fair. Anyone with half a brain knows that BA are punching above their weight.

My other main take away is: we can look forward to a day when Dean Johnes will be crowned becoming the Ashes e-sports champion.

I think the codemasters catching system was mentioned here, I reckon it would work really well if applied to fielding in general. Theres already a aerial ball hud in the game, just have that ring around the ball change colours as its approaching a fielder. So we just have to decide on what course of action the fielder is going to take and also time that action to avoid misfielding/ dropping the catch. The fielders automatically make the run (on semi auto fielding) we just have to focus on choosing and timing the correct course of action.

You could have something like this:

TIMING INDICATORS

RED: no chance of getting to the ball/ very late (certain drop/misfield)

ORANGE: Late

YELLOW: OK

DARK GREEN: GOOD

LIGHT GREEN: PERFECT

Colour flow: Batsman: red-orange-yellow- dark green - light green- fielder: depends on circumstance

ACTIONS:

  • PICK UP/ PICK UP & THROW: to do a pick up just tap either of the throw buttons, to do a simultaneous pick up and throw press and hold to pick up and throw.

timing window: light green (clinical), dark green (not as smooth variation), yellow ( half stop, fumble), orange ( half stop (fumble) or complete miss), red (complete miss).

  • GET BEHIND THE LINE : if the balls coming at the fielder at pace , rather then attacking the ball and going for a quick pick up which might be risky as the timing will be harder as the colours will change quickly as the ball approaches one might decide to get behind the line of the ball to avoid misfielding the ball.

Timing window: light green/ dark green/ yellow (clinical), Orange (half stop, fumble), red(complete miss field)

  • DIVE OR SLIDE

    Timing window:
Yellow (clinical) for these actions you are going early , Orange: situations where the ball is getting away (might stop/ half stop/ complete misfield), Red (complete Miss field). If the indicator is in the greens you should be in a position where u don't need to dive/ side.

  • CATCHING: just have the throwing buttons x and o become catching buttons.

    Timing window:
Light green (clinical 100% taken), dark green (80% chance), yellow (50%), orange (20%), red( drop). Maybe for reaction catches and fielding you could have a slight split second slow mo just to alert you that theres a reaction catch/ fielding play. then the play will carry out in real time and u have to time the catch back in real time just like codies.

  • Manual pick up when Bowler/keeper backing up behind the stumps (only for attacking throws):

As ive mentioned earlier there should be different throws. If your simply throwing the ball back in I think the keeper/ bowler collecting the ball should be automated. However for attacking throws when u are throwing in the blue for the keeper/ bowler to break the stumps you should have to complete the action by timing the pick up behind the stumps and then breaking the stumps.

Tap x or o to do a pick up or press and hold to simultaneously pick up and break stumps.

Timing window: light/dark green (clinical), Yellow (60% chance of pickup ), orange (30%), red (complete miss). When the keeper or bowler misfield the infielder backing up the throw should be automated. Would be overkill to have to also time the pick up/stop for them too.
There could be some options in how this fielding timing system is presented.
The game should have some options, u could have the ball hud change colours , or you could have a ring around the base of the player's feet in pursuit 2k style that will change colours as the ball approaches or have the hud turned off and just go off feel if that's what you prefer.

TBH thats actually a pretty useful video, mainly for those who feel BA dont do things because they dont care.. But that information on how much they push within that budget is just great..

And @Gayan Good suggestions there mate.. I think we could incorporate this colour code system along with the trail of PUBG bomb throwing for direct hits or even for throw on the run..You need to point the RAS in the direction of the throw you want to rather than just a button for throwing to either end.. For normal or regular throws we could have the button based throwing.. So with that getting those direct hits or quick throws to the WK or bowler becomes a mini game made interesting with moments where you grabbed the opportunity and moments where you could have changed the game with a one good throw..

I would like some additions to career mode. That would be great. Unlike some, I actually liked the concept of a dynamic lineup, and think this is a great move forward. A "franchise" or "undroppable" tag could be something that would eliminate this issue for those who do not want dynamic lineups. Essentially, the idea would be that you can assign a "franchise", or "undroppable" tag to certain players. These players would then continue to play their careers until they retire because of old age. They should move up and down the lineup so not to interfere with a career player's position. This could be an option in the players' info page. Basically, an option that could be something like "line up", which could be turned "on" or "off". This could be under the country option.

Also, a records page that shows important records for each format would be nice. Test, ODI and T20is with their own important records, and the person who currently holds these. It could be good incentive to one day see our career players' names replace these legends one day.

The recent patch for Ashes has made me changed my tune to an extent on the company. It is nice to see this kind of commitment, surely. I stand corrected.

I think career mode needs a lot of work though in the future. Specific format retirements (i.e. retirements from only one or two formats), customization (sleeves, tattoos, bands, etc) would be nice. Also, players in career should get contract offers every year from leagues like the IPL etc., in case they want to change the team later on in career.

I only ever play DB for the career mode...as a RL cricketer who never went higher than 4th Grade cricket and who always dreamed of playing for Aust, I absolutely love the career mode esp starting at a club with low skills then working your way up. Ideally I would love to see:

1. club cricket (as we have) but in 2-3 grades so you get the feeling of accomplishment, playing all formats (2 day, 1 day, T20) so that you could specialise if you want. Eg. I'm a slow batsman...always have been and thats why I love test cricket...I suck at T20 and trying to slog everything.
2. When you do eventually get picked for 1 Div, then you see your selection meter for State rising.
3. once you get to state (in line with all the ideas by the OP eg. changing your position in the batting lineup, etc) you should also be selected for other stuff like say U19s, U21s, PM XI, etc so that you know you're 'on the path'
4. Once you get good scores/averages at state level, your potential selection for the national side should inc as well.

The colour thing will work great for WicketKeeping in my opinion.
Imagine WicketKeeper in first person mode.

How about an option in between aerial shots and normal shots? Something to get the ball over the infield, but not going for a six. This should have less risk associated with it than full blown lofted shots, but more than normal shots. So in that sense, precision shots will be the least risky, then normal shots, then power shots along the ground, than 'over the infield' shots, and finally the most risky, aerial shots. I'm not sure how you would do it though on the joystick as all the buttons are currently occupied.

In career mode, a section showing the "ICC Cricket Hall of Fame" members. Then, if we perform well with our players, perhaps after retirement, we could see our names being inducted there?
