Top class knock from Smith. To bat so well in the first high profile 50 overs match that you play after a year requires skill and composure of the highest order.

The Ind - NZ warmup match is a role reversal of CT 17 warm up game played between the same team at the same venue where NZ batted first and were bundled out for 189 and India chasing the target with 7 wickets in hand.

Did they ? As far as I remember India won by 45 runs due to DLS Method. That match could've been a lot closer had India played the whole match[DOUBLEPOST=1558797196][/DOUBLEPOST]I want the same pitch for the Bangladesh game though and want India to play better than today.

What a wake up call for us

This is why we should have had a shortened IPL and reached England a couple of weeks before the warm ups atleast. 100-7 is not acceptable for the #2 team in the world, regardless of how the wicket is behaving. Once we lose the top two or three wickets then we should plan to play out the 50 overs.

Anyways better happen in thr wamup so we don't repeat this during the tournament hopefully

Could have would have should have are a matter of conjecture. The fact is that both are warmup games and will be hardly will be remembered and important for folks or us here to discuss more about the combinations India should try ahead of the first game WC game not the result if these warmup games.

Actually, this is a very good start for India. A jolt in the very first game (and that too a warm up) of what is going to be a long tournament. I am not too worried and obviously having followed Indian cricket for 23 years now, I know that there is nothing negative to be taken from this defeat to NZ in the warm-up.

It is heartwarming to see swinging conditions. India better be prepared for a few more games like this in the actual tournament. Actually India need to pick the XI based on the conditions and hope the analysts are on top of their game during the tournament. If conditions are expected to swing, I would not play Rahul and I would instead play Shankar and bat him at 4. I prefer a calm and quiet Shankar over a flashy Rahul when it comes to swinging conditions. If the conditions favor batting, obviously Rahul should play and he should bat No. 4. I hope Shankar is fit enough and ready to play in the next warm up game.

Yes, Vijay Shankar has shown such amazing talent in swinging conditions over a flashy Rahul. After all, it is Shankar who has the test match centuries in Australia & England! The biased has descended from juvenile to the toddlers status.[DOUBLEPOST=1558802635][/DOUBLEPOST]I think the only thing that worries me is that on such days, the toss becomes an enormous enormous advantage. I have no issues if it stays this way for the whole game but I rather a 400 plays 400 game than a game where the balance of power shifts from one session to another.

Is it necessary to criticize or make sarcasms towards other players for no reason just because people are doubting the player you like ? Doubts can even be cleared by bringing up some positive inferences. And talking about the point of scoring centuries in England and Australia the thing is they have flat surfaces even in Test matches the only things is that it seams around in England due to weather conditions over there. And also there is nothing wrong in accepting the fact that KL Rahul hasn't done well in the ODI format especially in the middle order. And if you aren't dissapointed with the way he got out today then you are certainly getting blind-folded as a fan. Shankar isn't better than KL Rahul ok agreed but if that means that you are going to stick with him knowing that he won't be able to do well then that is a very wrong approach. The guy himself has said that he is better playing in the top order so there is no point in unnecessary forcing him to play. Ideally I would want to see MS bat at 4 and would also want to play both all-rounder in Hardik and Shankar with Jadhav batting in between them. This would definitely sort out things in a better way :thumbs

I’m not sure if we’ve watched the same test matches in recent times. Does Rahul have undoubted talent? Yes. But does Rahul have current issues with his footwork and technique that has left him highly susceptible to being dismissed in almost comical ways when the ball swings? Also yes.

Massive win for Australia too, they’ve been on the receiving end of some rather humiliating defeats to this English side in the past and this victory could very well lift the mental block that they seem to have versus them. Really liking Finch’s captaincy, particularly with how he uses his bowlers and his field placements.[DOUBLEPOST=1558810459][/DOUBLEPOST]

This would probably be my XI too, although I’d have Jadeja in for one of the spinners on a pitch that isn’t flat and Jadhav at 5 instead of Shankar if he regains form.

Absolutely! When it’s swinging, I’ve no confidence in Rahul. Neither do I have confidence in Dinesh Karthik. If Rayudu has been picked for Shankar, I’d said “Rayudu over Rahul in swinging conditions”. But I guess then the sarcasm will be “Oh Rayudu is a CSK player and is also a South Indian like you and that’s you are favoring him” :rolleyes

Shankar was selected for No.4 and Rahul as backup opener. Yet Ive been favoring Rahul at 4 if it’s good batting conditions.

Shankar over KL as a batsman in seaming conditions? On what basis? Shankar hasn't shown anything in his batting so far which suggest he has the technique to tackle lateral movement, while Rahul has despite his failures. Yesterday also he looked fairly fluent until he got that delivery that keep creeping up on him. Made an error by not closing the face of the bat fully

I don't see how shankar would have done any worse or better when the whole top and middle order failed. We can't blame kohli for cutting and chopping thr batting if we ourselves keep asking for players to be dropped after one failure

Now shankar as an additional bowling option in such conditions would be a much better reason to pull him into the lineup, although his bowling isn't exactly world class level either. I just don't have faith in his abilities. Hope he proved me wrong and wins the cup for us

If we are going to make seaming conditions the benchmark for selection, Pujara will be the first name on my team sheet. Why play Dhawan? I think we are over complicating the matter. I really find Shankar promising and see him and Pandya as one of our mainstays in the years to come but neither is a KL Rahul. The matter is complicated because of the selectors. Mr. Sai makes a good point that Shankar has been picked for the spot but the argument that "his calm style prevails over Rahul's flashy" is an unjustified comment because Shankar has not shown any such "calmness" or performance. KL has two test centuries in these challenging conditions and I tend to lean more towards his proven stature than an unproven one. Be glad to see Shankar perform and get a MOS even because he's a good guy. Does he deserve to be in this side ahead of KL at this point in time? NO.

The real good thing about having Shankar is that he can be a priceless back up for Jadhav. That guy isn't a spring chicken, not played a flyer in months and Australia's series tended to suggest his bowling is figured out.
