In the spirit of the Left-Handed Cricketers Draft, I feel like running another one. This time, it is an all-time England ODI XI draft, which means the eligibility rules are much more relaxed than they were for the last one: you can pick any of the 254 players to have represented England in a One-Day International.

This time, there is an upper limit on sign-ups; I'm thinking no more than six of us will take part (including me, because I want to).
  1. @Aislabie
  2. @blockerdave
  3. @Rebel2k19
  4. @Sinister One
  5. @NilayShah60
  6. @CerealKiller
Please be aware, this isn't just about the names you pick - it's also about sharing a little bit of information about the players you've picked along the lines of this.

Joe Root
Joe Root is surely the best ODI batsman England has ever had and the stats prove it. A perfect number 3 for any side and someone who can be trusted in any situation. He is the 2nd highest run scorer for England and has the best batting average for an Englishman. A member of the so called 'Fab Four'. He has also scored more centuries for England than any other player. Currently 16. Two of them have come in the ongoing world cup. A true asset to any team, Joe Root will be my #3.

Overall Pick #4: Andrew Flintoff
JS53389141.jpg

Profile
Now remembered as combination of England's 2005 Ashes hero, a reality TV star and an incompetent pedalo pilot, Andrew Flintoff's One-Day International exploits are often overlooked despite being entirely world class. In particular, 2004-spec Flintoff was the best white-ball player in the world, striking a purple patch in which he made three centuries and a 99 in the space of six innings while continuing to be a key member of the bowling attack. So potent was his bowling, especially at the death, that he still has England's best-ever ODI bowling average for bowlers with 50 wickets or more: 23.61. The only sad thing about Flintoff's career is that his body didn't hold out for long enough to be a part of England's World Twenty20 triumph in the West Indies, but that's not what this draft is about.

Yeah, the top four picks here were also my top four draft targets. I had Root just slightly above Flintoff, but Bairstow and Buttler below.
I was surprised too he wasn't picked by the next two. But I can understand CK's Buttler pick. A solid WK bat. Not sure about Bairstow being the 2nd pick.

There is only one choice for me - Sir Ian Terence Botham.

Covers just so many bases - can stick him in to open as a pinch hitter, or have him come in down the order to biff some late order runs. 2000 runs at 23 and a strike rate of doesn't sound hugely impressive, but in the context of the era these were good numbers.

With the ball, he's a threat with new ball and old, and the chance of picking up early wickets to put the opposition on the back foot early doors is key. Took 145 wickets at 28.54 with an economy rate of 3.96 - which was miserly even for then. His strike rate of 43.2 is particularly impressive.

In the field, his solid slip catching is important from a perspective of keeping catchers in and taking wickets, whereas he obviously provides an inspirational figure for others to play around.

Whenever he is at the crease or has ball in hand, the opposition will be wary.

over to you @NilayShah60
