Sri Lanka have massively improved under Karunaratne’s leadership in recent times and finally look like they have a settled lineup.

• Their top 3 looks solid finally, Avishka is a special talent and Kusal Perera looks like he will finally deliver on the potential he has been showing for a long time. Karunaratne is the ideal anchor to play on either side of these two aggressive batsmen.
• Kusal Mendis is a talented batsman, but has flattered to deceive for far too long now. He has barely played any List A games and was poor in the few he played. He needs to get back to domestic cricket and rework his game with a clear plan and role, his position has been shuffled way too much which has partly contributed to his woes. Worst case scenario, he fails in ODIs but still remains a decent test batsman that Sri Lanka can use.
• Would like to see Mathews at 4, he is the ideal man you would want in the case of two quick wickets and is also capable of building an innings to launch later if required. He is not the old Mathews either who would score runs at a rapid pace during the death overs. On the other hand given that he doesn’t bowl these days, Mathews is fully capable of taking on an increased workload with the bat and has the skill to play an important role too.
• A player like Angelo Perera should be playing at 5 with Shanaka at 6 followed by Thisara and Dhananjaya. Dhananjaya can always be promoted in cases of a collapse to shield the hitters for later. Thirimanne is a player terribly out of position at 6 and shouldn’t be batting there for much longer, the team already has two dependable anchors in Karunaratne and Mathews, with an extra played if needed in Dhananjaya. Thirimanne is just overkill.
• The bowling lineup seems good too, Pradeep has a mean yorker in him, Kumara has got genuine pace while Udana has shown that he can bowl decently too (although I don’t rate him too highly). If Akila bowls as well as he did today, him and Dhananjaya could be extremely resourceful in the Indian WC. Thisara and Shanaka can always provide the extra seamer option if required too.
