Rassie definitely deserves chances. Pretorius also did not do very badly. Yes, I agree with you that they have to back young players rather than filling their team with domestic stars completely.

The likes of Bavuma, Hendricks are definitely not good enough.

Receiving chances is one thing, South Africa are actively backing these players for the future as their spine!

Rassie is never going to be your world class batting star to base the lineup around for example, yet they see him as their key cog. Pretorius should not be in a test XI barring few special circumstances as he is neither good enough to be a top four bowler nor a top seven batsman, yet here we are. These are a bunch of handy cricketers who will never truly replace the likes of AbD and Amla. There are equally skilled players with actual room to grow who would be much better choices than these current players.

I wonder if some of these players are being backed only because they are afraid of them turning into Harmer v2.0 after going Kolpak.

This has to be the worst South African side since they were re-admitted to Test cricket. I feel bad for the fans. I remember them when they had all-time greats like Graeme Pollock, Barry Richards, Mike Procter and Peter Pollock. What must those guys be thinking now?

Incredible series win for England, even Root's captaincy wasn't so bad and shined at times! Plus, barring the Buttler selection and persistence with Bairstow pretty much every other call the selectors made were spot on. To come back this strongly after the illness bug and losing the first test away from home requires real talent and mental strength, even if this is the worst South African side in decades.

There is a good nucleus of a side here with a good mix of players. All that they need is a world class top order batsman who consistently puts out those big scores like Root before his captaincy stint and a good keeper batsman. The second problem should be solved once Foakes makes his inevitable return, but the first one might take a while indeed.

Yeah, but Pope only got 11 in the second innings. So he's clearly finished.

I can't wait for the Stokes, Woakes and Foakes show. The most famous triple act to play for England since the Three Stooges played in the 1935 Ashes series.

I agree with everything you've said, would also add I can't see the point of Denly in the team.Would much prefer Crawley or Sibley to bat at 3 once Burns comes back.

Well it looks like Bairstow's 10 runs at Centurion has been enough for him to come back at number 3.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2...ld-collision-with-jos-buttler-england-cricket

"Denly averages twice that of Bairstow and faces thrice the number of balls per innings over the last 15 innings at a much tougher position? Naah, let's give Pairstow an umpteenth chance to come good"[DOUBLEPOST=1580276229][/DOUBLEPOST]
It seems it was a choice between him and Jennings. That's like choosing between Dumb and Dumber.

At least Jennings has shown that he isn't half bad on spin friendly tracks and is pretty much relegated to an Asia specialist now, unlike Bairstow whose spectre haunts this squad every series.

The main problem I'd have with Bairstow coming back in again, is that he hasn't had a chance to fix his problem.

He's been struggling getting castled by full, straight quick bowling, that isn't going to have gone away. Granted in Sri Lanka he might get away with it, but it won't get resolved. So he'll probably have a decent tour against the spin, keep his place, then we'll be sat here at the end of next summer with the same issue. Naseem Shah will have skittled him for 4 single figure scores and no one in the coaching staff will have any idea why
