I’ve decided to take control of Australia for the English summer and play the World Cup and follow it up with the Ashes.


First game of the World Cup saw us play Afghanistan, with Aaron Finch winning the toss and electing to bat. But Australia started terribly, Warner edged of 2nd ball, and Khawaja was run out on the last ball of over 1. Australia 2/0 off the first over. Smith was next to go with Australia still yet to score, and when Stoinis left one that darted back in to hit his off stump Australia were 4-4. Alex Carey and Skipper Aaron Finch attempted to salvage the innings before Carey fell for 15 playing around a slider from Rashid Khan. Glenn Maxwell came to crease and with Finch built a strong partnership of 55 before Finch was bowled by a Rashid Khan wrongun. Maxwell batted brilliant with the tail and Australia somehow managed to get to 203, being bowled out in the 41st over.

When Afghanistan came out to bat, Shahzad was brutal early crunching Starc and Cummins around the park, but Cummins would have the last laugh, edging him off for 29, and introduction of Coulter-Nile to the attack saw him clean bowl Zazai. Afghanistan continued to lose wickets with only Zadran making a notable score in the innings, leading to Afghanistan being bowled out for 138.
A 65 run victory for Australia, to come from 4/4 to win that game was quite thrilling.

Second game saw Australia take on the West Indies. The West Indies won the toss and elected to bat in a rain shortened match of 40 overs. Cummins was brilliant early with the West Indies finishing the powerplay 3-48, all wickets taken by Cummins. Maxwell was also brilliant with the ball tearing up the West Indies middle order, leaving the West Indies all out for 165. Starc and Zampa also picked up a wicket each.


Australia again started poorly with the bat, as Finch and Warner both fell early. Khawaja and Smith built a solid partnership, before Keemo Paul dismissed Smith, and then Stoinis in the same over. Khawaja would continue to score runs while wickets tumbled at the other end, with two disastrous run outs of Carey and Maxwell leading Australia to be 6-109 off 23 overs, still 57 runs short of the target. Again Australia’s tail would wag, but when Khawaja was dismissed by Keemo Paul, Australia were 9-152, still requiring 14 runs to win. Starc and Zampa were able to keep their cool, and guide Australia over the line for an insane 1 wicket win.

Australia’s third game saw them take on India at The Oval. Australia still remaining unchanged won the toss and elected to bat. Warner and Finch again both fell early - Australia 2/44 after the powerplay. Khawaja batted brilliantly alongside Smith and Stoinis and brought up Australia’s first 100 of the tournament at quick pace, Australia were eventually bowled out for 281 in the 46th over, a great bowling display carried by Jasprit Bumrah’s 3-50 as well as a direct hit from the boundary to remove Glenn Maxwell.


India came out in reply and Shikhar Dhawan was knocked over by a trademark Mitchell Starc yorker in the first over. This brought Kholi to the crease who played a gem of a knock (116 off 89), with Sharma chipping in with 49, and Shreyas Iyer also picked up a very slow 51. Jadeja came in with India needing 9 an over and was brutal with his assault towards Cummins and Starc at the death, and on the third last ball managed an inside edge for 4, giving India the victory.

Playing the bodyline series as England. I must've felt complacent after a 5 wicket victory in the 1st test since it came within 4 days. Little did I realize that playing on a hard wicket would completely change everything. At the MCG, the Australians fiercely fought back thanks to mainly the Englishmen's utter failure to read the bounce. Jardine and Co survived less than 27 overs with a paltry 118 on the board. Woodfull's team took full advantage of it and grabbed a crucial 221 run first-innings lead on the second day. With more than 3 days to go, only a miracle could save the English. Luckily, they had two.

Learning from their 1st innings downfall, Sutcliffe and Wyatt kept blocking and leaving the good balls during the first 15 overs. No amount of gaps could lure them to even nudge the ball for a single. Also, this time around, they did not play any sweep or reverse sweep. Once they became comfortable, singles and doubles became frequent, with the odd boundary every few overs. By the time the Australians managed to break the opening partnership, there were over 400 runs on the board. Both batsmen scored double hundreds and played more than 800 balls between them. England posted a mammoth 662, leaving Australia with a target of 442 in about 4 sessions. The match was over on the morning of the 5th day, with Australia never even looking to be a challenge after the 2nd day.

I cannot thank the community enough for the teams and the stadium. Glad that I got to play the bodyline--at least in some form.
