SUMMARY​

The 2008 edition of the Champions League Twenty20 was the fifth iteration of the tournament in this timeline. A single round-robin, leading into the knockouts.
The tournament featured twelve participants, the most since it has since its inception. It was jointly hosted by South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
And with it being the first instalment of the tournament to be held across multiple countries, it became the biggest version of the Champions League Twenty20 till date.

After having successfully hosted the tournament, South Africa became the first nation to host the top-tiered twenty20 tournaments of the world.
As they had already played hosts to the inaugural ICC World Twenty20, the year previous to this. Five venues were selected across the three hosting countries.
Three from South Africa, and one apiece from Kenya and Zimbabwe. The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg was chosen to host the season finale.
The most high-profiled match played in Kenya was the first quarter-final, and the most high-profiled game played in Zimbabwe was the first semi-final.

The twelve teams that featured were inclusive of, for the first time ever, a team from the Netherlands, a team from India, a team from Kenya and a team from Scotland.
Australia's Victorian Bushrangers, the champions of the previous edition, succeeded in qualifying for this season as well. Making it their third appearance, overall.
And so did the Sialkot Stallions from Pakistan. They qualified for the Champions League hence making it their third Champions League appearance, overall.
After having already played in the 2005 edition of the Champions League, the Titans returned for their second appearance. All other teams were on their debut.

The tournament was won by Trinidad & Tobago who defeated the defending champions from last year, the Victorian Bushrangers in the final to clinch the title.
Leading up to the final, both the teams remained unbeaten. Trinidad & Tobago won Pool D after defeating Central Stags and the Easterns from Zimbabwe.
And the Victorian Bushrangers won Pool A, after beating Tamil Nadu and the Carlton Cricket Club, convincingly qualifying for the knockouts.
En route to the final, the Victorian Bushrangers defeated Sialkot Stallions in the quarter-final, and Kent Spitfires in the semi-final, with the latter being a stellar game.
Trinidad & Tobago beat Tamil Nadu in the quarter-final, and bulldozed over the Titans in the semi-final, in one of the most one-sided affairs in the league's history.

In the final, Trinidad & Tobago played first and posted an intimidating total. The Victorian Bushrangers fell way short of the target, losing their title, and their streak.
Not only was this Victorian Bushrangers' first defeat in the season, it was their first defeat in matches from this, and the previous season, combined.
The year previous to this, the Victorian Bushrangers had won the tournament without losing a single game. This year, the same feat was achieved by Trinidad & Tobago.

This season was poised with some stellar performances, such as Dale Steyn's five-wicket haul against the Sialkot Stallions. The first five-fer in the league's history.
Lendl Simmons of Trinidad & Tobago mounted an unbeaten hundred in the semi-final of the tournament, eliminating the Titans rather unceremoniously.
Trinidad & Tobago's all-rounder, Dwayne Bravo was adjudged as the player of the tournament for his instrumental role in the team's utopian Champions League campaign.
Lasith Malinga of Kent Spitfires was the leading wicket-taker, and AB de Villiers of the Titans was the leading run-scorer. Both their teams were beaten in the semi-finals.

MATCHES OF THE TOURNAMENT​

4th Pool Match, Kent Spitfires vs Wayamba Elevens - Kent Spitfires won by 4 runs
Kingsmead Cricket Ground, Durban

A first-round match played in Durban between the Kent Spitfires and Wayamba Elevens, turned out to be a contest that was decided by the narrowest of margins.
After having decided to bat first upon winning the toss, the Spitfires lost Joe Denly on the very first ball of the innings to Jeevantha Kulatunga, via lbw.
Thisara Perera then struck in the fourth over to remove Rob Key and provided the Elevens with their second wicket of the match.

The early dismissals however, had little to no impact on Spitfires' proceedings as the next two batsmen went on to mount eighty-four runs between themselves.
The mentioned batsmen, Matt Walker and Martin van Jaarsveld, played through the majority of the innings, with their pairing coming to its end in the sixteenth over.
Matt Walker opted to sneak a cheeky but, Chanaka Welegedara, ran towards the ball, turned, and hit the bullseye on the non-strikers end to dismiss him.

In spite of that breakthrough, the Spitfires added fifty-six runs in the last four overs, which is inclusive of a twenty-four-run eighteenth over from Ajantha Mendis.
They finished with a formidable one-sixty-eight run score, setting up a target that even the highly admired Elevens would have troubles chasing.

Elevens' rebuttal against the Spitfires was fuelled with fire and fury. They still however, fell short by just four runs, courtesy of their fellow Sri Lankan.
Lasith Malinga was the catalyst for Elevens' defeat, as he claimed a four-wicket haul, and successfully defended just seven runs in the last over.

Spitfires started their innings strongly, but were hindered by Simon Cook's dismissal of Michael Vandort, who had gotten off to a blitzy start.
Lasith Malinga then collected two wickets in the latter half of the power play, throwing a spanner in the works for the Elevens.
Their fourth wicket pairing, Jeevantha Kulatunga and Sameera de Zoysa showed the Spitfires incredible resistence and led the Elevens' resurgence.

Ryan McLaren brought an end to that threatening partnership, dismissing Jeevantha Kulatunga on forty-one, which he scored of just twenty-eight deliveries.
Yasir Arafat was brought on to bowl the all-important seventeenth over, and boy did he ever deliver. He bowled a wicket-maiden, dismissing Sameera de Zoysa.

With only seven runs to defend in the final over, the Spitfires' captain brought on Lasith Malinga to achieve this unfeasible feat. And, so he did.
He dismissed the oh-so dangerous Thisara Perera on the first ball of the over, and with a typical yorker no less. He conceded just three runs on the next four balls.
Then by dismissing Chanaka Welegedara on the last ball, Lasith Malinga ensured a four-wicket haul for himself, and the win for his team. Just by four runs.

10th Pool Match, Central Stags vs Trinidad & Tobago - Trinidad & Tobago won by 4 runs
Kingsmead Cricket Ground, Durban

After having witnessed a stellar game earlier this season, the Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban was overwhelmed by another. Another, which was quite similar.
Central Stags took on Trinidad & Tobago to decide which team zeniths their pool, as they were both equal on points with a win each over the Easterns.
Trinidad won the toss, and opted to bat first. The first ball of the innings, bowled by Michael Mason, was swatted away for a six by Lendl Simmons.
But, the nonchalant start was subdued the very next ball following a very sketchy effort at a slog-sweep that led to Lendl Simmons demise via lbw.
The first ball goes for a massive six, and the very next ball, the bowler retaliates with an all-important wicket. The ball after that? Another six! Quite the start.

Michael Mason continued his opening spell and dismissed Trinidad's captain, Darren Ganga in the third over of the innings. Leaving Trinidad in a tough situation.
His acolytes, William Perkins and Dwayne Bravo however, launched a counterstrike and succeeded at it. They added a gargantuan one-twenty-four for that wicket.
Their buoyant partnership was brought to a halt by Jacob Oram in the seventeenth over, but by that point, it had already achieved its purpose.
Jacob Oram claimed the wicket of Dwayne Bravo, who had just passed his fifty. This was the final over of Jacob Oram's spell, and boy did he make it count.

Unfortunately for the Stags, the arrival of the newcomer, Kieron Pollard, spelled doom for them. He walloped a swift little cameo to push his team to a huge total.
William Perkins, undoubtedly the star of the innings for Trinidad, was dismissed in the final over by Michael Mason after his marvellous innings.
Michael Mason finished with three scalps to his name. Jacob Oram claimed a wicket too, and he had the best economy in the Stags' bowling line.

In response, the Stags' fell just marginally short against a confining Trinidad bowling effort. The Stags were defeated by a margin of just four runs.
Ross Taylor played a valiant innings when the rest of the top-order failed. but the failure of said top-order was the tangible reason why the Stags fell short.
Brendon Diamanti played a phenomenal late cameo, scoring twenty-seven off just twelve deliveries, but even that was too little too late.

Kieron Pollard, Dave Mohammed and Dwayne Bravo all had appalling economies, but in a high-scorer like this, it was expected and accepted.
Trinidad bowled their way to victory, with Kieron Pollard and Mervyn Dillon claiming two wickets apiece, whereas Dwayne Bravo and Dave Mohammed claimed one.
Rayad Emrit also picked up a wicket to his name, and was the most economic amongst the wicket takers. Not to mention, the wicket he picked was of Ross Taylor.
Samuel Badree and Sherwin Ganga went wicketless, but with great economies. Mervyn Dillon bowled the final over, and he successfully defended nine runs.
Brendon Diamanti, the powerhouse might've snatched the win for his team had he been provided the strike for the rest of the over. Sadly, that was not the case.

1st Semi-Final, Victorian Bushrangers vs Kent Spitfires - Victorian Bushrangers won by 2 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo

With the stakes raised up to their highest, the Victorian Bushrangers managed a heist of a victory against the Kent Spitfires to forge ahead to the final.
Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo witnessed, perhaps the best match of the tournament between the Bushrangers and the Spitfires in a version of the Ashes bout.

The Spitfires, after electing to bat first in this all-important game, were rattled early on with the dismissals of their first four wickets within the first three overs.
Luckily for them, Martin van Jaarsveld and Andrew Hall were able to salvage the innings for the Spitfires. They added ninety-four runs amongst themselves.
The partnership ended when Andrew Hall was dismissed for forty-one off thirty-seven balls, by a scorcher of a delivery from Shane Harwood in the sixteenth over.

John Hastings claimed two wickets on the last two balls of the eighteenth over, dismissing Yasir Arafat and James Tredwell to leave the Spitfires' eight down.
The next over, Clint McKay dismissed Martin van Jaarsveld and Lasith Malinga to wrap up the Spitfires innings, and complete a four-wicket haul.
Despite being dismissed before playing out the overs for his team, Martin van Jaarsveld entertained a fantastic innings, scoring a fifty off just thirty-nine deliveries.

The Bushrangers were tasked to chase down a mediocre total of just one-thirty-seven in the second innings to secure themselves as one-half of the final.
Their start was marred by Lasith Malinga, who claimed three victims within the first five overs of the innings, leaving them sucking for air for the rest of the chase.
Lasith Malinga dismissed Michael Klinger, David Hussey and Cameron White. Claiming three of the most important wickets, all to his name.
Simon Cook had struck earlier as well, picking up the wicket of Brad Hodge, who leading into this match was, the leading run-scorer in the history of the league.

Aiden Blizzard and Adam Crosthwaite revitalised the innings and saved the Bushrangers from an utter embarrassment of a defeat by the hands of the Spitfires.
By adding eighty-four runs between themselves, they pushed the Bushrangers' closer to the target. Leaving only thirty-four runs to be scored from the last five overs.
Their game-changing partnership was brought to an end by Andrew Hall. He dismissed Aiden Blizzard, and then the very next ball, he dismissed John Hastings as well.

Andrew Hall jolted the Bushrangers' catch up on the target by picking up two wickets in quick succession in the seventeenth over. One of which, was Aiden Blizzard's.
Yasir Arafat was brought in to bowl the all important eighteenth over. With just a run-a-ball eighteen required, the Spitfires' only choice was to bowl them out.
And they got mighty close to it in this over. Yasir Arafat dismissed the well-set Adam Crosthwaite for forty-four, and then Dirk Nannes two balls later.
The Bushrangers needed thirteen off the final two overs, with just two wickets at hand. Darren Pattinson and Clint McKay were at the crease, facing Simon Cook.

Simon Cook bowled the penultimate over, in which, he gave away eight runs. The batsmen at the crease, gathered some valuable runs against troublesome bowling.
With five runs needed off the last over, Lasith Malinga, the star of Spitfires' campaign failed to deliver when his team needed him the most.
Two outrageous shots from Darren Pattinson pushed the Bushrangers over the line, and into the final. Leaving the Spitfires heartbroken, and eliminated.

Titans' decision to bowl first was completely validated by Dale Steyn, as his spell knocked the Sialkot Stallions out for a mere 146 in 19.2 overs.
Dale Steyn struck early in the innings, incapacitating Sialkot Stallions from assuring a big total to defend against a very heavy Titans' batting lineup.

In spite of that daunting start, the Sialkot Stallions managed to revitalise their innings and push their scoreline towards something the bowlers could defend.
But, Dale Steyn was later brought back into the attack to bowl the final over of the innings, and he wrapped up the innings, completing a 5-wicket haul.
The first ever 5-wicket haul in the history of the Champions League Twenty20.

2nd SEMI-FINAL - TITANS vs TRINIDAD & TOBAGO at Newlands Cricket Ground, Cape Town

Trinidad & Tobago's Lendl Simmons forged a hundred of the highest calibre to shoot his team into the final, in what turned out to be, a one-sided thrashing.
They won with 9 wickets and 28 deliveries to spare whilst chasing a rather modest total of 164 set up by the Titans, courtesy of Lendl Simmons' hundred.
This was the first ton of the season, and only the third in the league's history. He reached fifty in twenty balls, then he completed his hundred in the next thirty-two.

Against a bowling line that consisted of Pierre Joubert, Albie Morkel, Dale Steyn and Roelof van der Merwe, this was quite the feat.
