They're the ascii codes. you'll also have Alt 1 which will give you a smiley. Most would be aware of this I guess.

I've been trying to get the pound sign for ages as it's not on my keyboard, but whenever I do ALT 156 I keep getting put back to the PC homepage.

You have to use the number pad on the right. If you're on a laptop, you'll have to press the function key as well and then press the key having the no. as its function. BTW, ALT 1 will take you to the homepage of the site, and I guess ALT 4 should take you to search.

I don't hold them all at the same time, right? I have been hitting one at a time.

But I can't do it again, and even when I did it, it took me to the homepage...

Can't get it to work on my laptop's keyboard, but can with my wired keyboard(I actually use the wired one more so yeah).

All these codes have always worked perfectly on my laptop. I guess that's because I'm lucky to have the numpad on the laptop keyboard.
