Ravi,

I have started bowling against SA. First I have to commend you on modifying how the CPU bats for short pitched outside the off-stump deliveries. Now, I seem to get punished for those deliveries most of the time. The CPU seems to maintain an excellent run-rate. I have been struggling to keep them at run-rate of about 7 an over. Most of the overs seems to go for more.

But, there seems to be a slight problem. The CPU seems to be failing to make contact with some deliveries bowled straight, particularly when it is trying to go for a big hit, which is quite often. Because of this, the CPU gets bowled (most of the time) to these deliveries. I have attached the scoreboard of SA till now and my bowling figures. You can see that all my bowlers have been hit, but, the CPU has lost quite a lot of wickets because they missed straight deliveries by going for big hits. You can clearly see this in the scorecard attached.

Maybe making the CPU less aggressive will solve this problem ? Anyway, you can figure it out. Should I wait for an update from you? I guess I will finish this match off.

Bowling figures:

Any particular shot it is unable to connect and getting bowled to i.e an ondrive or an aerial straight drive or a cover drive.

I noticed it when I was tweaking but then I made changes to ensure it doesnt get bowled that often maybe I didnt upload the right version.

You may want to wait for me to upload the right version in case I havent done already unless you want to go ahead and finish this game off. I cant upload the new one right away but in another few hours I should be.

Do you also reckon its a touch too aggressive in particular the aerial shots? I am sure we dont want a situation where the opening bowlers are taken to the cleaners all the time. What type of pitch were you bowling on Murali?

Ravi,

I was playing on a hard pitch and the conditions were overcast. I have attached two images that shows you the type the shot that the CPU tried to play and missed and it seemed to be cover drive most of the time when it missed.

In the image, the first miss is against a fast bowler while the second is against a spin bowler.

I did not continue my match. I will wait for your patch upload. I am not sure whether the CPU can win from this stage though.

Yes, I think the CPU can certainly be made a touch less aggressive.

Now that I think about it - a couple of times, I bowled straight the CPU missed it when it was playing the on-drive. During those times, I thought the CPU should have been playing on the back foot, but the CPU played a front foot on-drive.

I should say that my balls may not have been completely straight but a touch to the off-side, as you can see from the attached images.

Thanks for that Murali, it is the cover drive to a ball pitched in line with the stumps and one ondrive shot that is played to a ball pitching middl and leg. I thought I had fixed these two shots in the patch, maybe not. I will make those changes and will upload the fixes here. Otherwise the shot selection is pretty good right, it doesnt try to leg glance balls bowled outside off stump right?

Yes, Ravi. The shot selection seemed really good. The CPU was not trying to leg glance balls bowled outside the off-stump.

Everything else seemed great. Keep up the good work.

Here we go Murali, the altered version. The patch is now hopefully solid in terms of run scoring, not throwing away wickets and posting good totals. I had a game playing as SA against England and England scored 283/4 after 50 overs. England were 82/2 after 15 overs so the opening bowlers were not taken to cleaners although Tresco at the start of the inning tore into Pollock. Then by around 40th over the score was somewhere around 201/3 I think. 82 runs in the last 10 overs losing only one wicket is fairly reasonable. The only thing I wasn't happy about was the pacing post 40th over, I would have liked the CPU to go over the top more number of times. I have aptly changed the pacing file to take care of this but if anything let me know. Have a look at the scorecard for England.

Looks great, Ravi. Let me see how the last three SA batsmen bat. Unfortunately, I am unable to go back to the start of the innings because I overwrote the .sav file.

But, I will also try another new match before we can think about any modifications, if needed.

well i was impressed by the way the england v south africa game went. very realistic. i too sometimes face the problem wherein one of the CPU openers just smashes me in the start then ends up getting caught playing an aggressive shot. So I will use ur patch in the remaining matches of the natwest series, one against the indians and one against the aussies, and the final also if i qualify.

I too was although I was at the receiving end. The only thing I wasn't too impressed is the pacing post 40th over. I thought both could have played few more aerial shots what with another 7 wickets to go. It is way too hard to get everything spot on all the time with the patch but this one seemed good right from the start. It didn't try to hit me out of the park when bowled good line and length. We may not want this kind of scores all the time but rest assured Cricket 2004 will give odd collapses.

Ravi,

I have completed playing the finals against SA using your updated odi_version patch. As you already know, I had gotten the first 7 wickets using your previous patch and score stood at 152/7 off 22 overs when I started.

Let me explain step-by-step what happened:

I started bowling with Dinesh Mongia and in the second ball, I got the wicket of Boje bowled. So, I thought the problem still remained and imagined that I will get them all out in another 20 to 30 runs. Then SOMETHING HAPPENED.

For those who have a brave heart, go further down

A. Hall and A. Dawson got together with the score at 152/8 and they batted really well together and put on a 93 run partnership in about 16 overs - a run-rate of approximately 6 per over. They batted really well, going for lofted drives very rarely but finding the gaps most of the time. I was simply amazed, to express my feeling lightly. Finally, I was able to break the partnership using A. Kumble with a ball that spun away from the batsman. A. Hall got stumped for this ball. The new batsman who replaced A. Hall was Ntini. He too batted well and Dawson and Ntini put on 30 runs in about 5 overs. I was able to then get Dawson out, and boy should I say I was relieved.

I cannot believe how well the CPU batsmen bat. I find it hard to imagine what would have happened if I used this patch from the start.

What else can I say other than: SUPERB & THANKS A LOT.

For your interest, the scorecard is attached:

Thats very nice to know SA did show some fight back albeit it was the tail which did the bulk of the scoring. The tail may not be able to bat like this realistically but at least we have the shot selection and pacing near perfect. I may tweak very little to ensure the last two wickets do not pose such threats every other time but otherwise I am quite happy with the results. Scoring @ 6 on without losing one too many wickets is what I was after.

Thanks Murali for all this feedback, you have contributed heaps for this patch otherwise I would not have even attempted to produce one post V.10. Now this sets up the test cricket patch I will be looking forward to producing very nicely.
