As much as all of who people know, none of you know more than the professionals who constantly refer to Panesar as an agressive spin bowler, who has a model action and can spin it a long way.

For me the main advantage of Panesar over Giles has to be age. Giles has been a great servant for England in a period where we have had a serious dearth of spinning talent and on many occasions he has done a job.
However, I do think that Panesar is not only a match-winning bowler unlike Giles but that the more experience we can give him now the better he will be in the future. There's just no point hanging onto Giles unless we have a crazy desire to play two spinners and want one end held up!

Very sensible post there; Giles has been a great servant to England for a long time and has contributed a few good performances with bat and ball, but times have changed and Monty is the way forward.

Comparing Giles to Panesar? :D

Panesar actually spins it, Giles lets the spin pitch it for him, not to mention that he has hips of a war veteran.

Panesar is a match winner, Giles is a match player, in that he plays matches an only really contributes to the team in 8th wicket partnerships, as a batsman he has many weaknesses (Short bowling and spin).

Is that Panesar being out performed by Pietersen?

Pietersen took more wickets than Panesar, yes. On another note, Pietersen bowled 12 balls that actually turned a bit. That is 12 more than Giles has done in his entire England career.

Stay on topic guys. This thread is about the Ashes not the England v Pakistan series.

Thank you, Kev. Now, intresting how Gilchrist and Hussey will go in the Ashes, I wonder if Gillespie or Daniel Cullen will play.

why don't you just play a 5th seamer and leave the spinner out? especially if Simon Jones recovers. i don't think either panesar or giles will give the aussies any trouble what so ever, it's not like we make any of our wickets spinner friendly (excepot maybe SCG which is still a superb batting track). Watching Panesar against pakistan at the moment...he isn't getting it to turn a milimetre on a wicket that Kaneria and Afridi have been turning it sharply. Looks like a pie chucker to me.

Obviously left arm orthodox spinners do not generate as much turn than right hand leg and off spinners. Panesar and many other left arm orthodox spinners are particularly dangerous is they give the ball extra flight and pitch the ball at the right area. They are particularly dangerous in there is also inconsistent bounce.

No, I think it's pretty much a certainty that Cullen won't be playing in the test leg of the summer- why would he? Unless some unforeseen injury or controversy emerges, Warne will feature in all five, whilst MacGill should bowl in tandum with him in Sydney, and if he's lucky- which he usually isn't, by the way- in Adelaide. Lee and McGrath will almost certainly be the opening pair come the 23rd of November, but the back-up option could go to anyone at this stage, really. I wouldn't rule out a Gillespie recall, but on the other hand, there are others to consider.

5 seamers?

Let's just say we play 5 seamers and Aus end up posting 600 and batting 150-170 overs over 2 days you'd want seames bowling all them? Makes no sense.

Wrist spinners always spin it more than finger spinners anyway.

Describe what you mean by pie chucker?

Kaneria and Afridi = Legspinners/Wristspinners

Panesar = Offspinner/Fingerspinner

Spin isn't the main thing for a spinner; I know it sounds weird but just because you can't rip the ball a lot doesn't mean a you are a bad spinner. For example, Daniel Vettori doesn't rip the ball a lot, but he relies on subtle changes of pace, flight and bounce and he has over 200 wickets by doing that. Even some legspinners don't rip the ball a lot; Anil Kumble has 500+ wickets and he doesn't turn the ball a lot.

And 5 seamers? Don't be ridiculous, every team needs a spinner to reduce the workload of the pacemen as well as to take wickets.

I don't see why finger spinners can't turn the ball? I mean, my offbreaks turn a hell load more than when I bowl legspin. That isn't an excuse.
Now why does England want a spinner? Reduce workload, or a strike force? If you want one to be a partnership breaker, get in 15-20 overs in a day, then best have a spinner who can rip the ball, accurate or not. If you want a true striking force, Panesar, 25+ overs in an innings, tight and attacking. You want one to reduce the workload, Giles, 15 overs a day, scores runs from number 8.
