Toss: Hobart won and chose to bat
Hobart showed a lot of grit in their first innings. Dan Solway, Ben McDermott and Usman Khawaja all made sixties, but Khawaja's 79 was the closest to the big innings they needed that they came. The wickets were spread around, but Jason Behrendorff taking four was the highlight.
Will Pucovski was the story of the first Canberra innings. Ably supported by Jack Edwards, Pucovski compiled a classic knock of 145 from 197 balls, including 28 boundaries and three sixes. Edwards' 85 was nothing to sniff at either, and the rest of the lineup did struggle against a great spell from Pat Cummins who took 6/121, but did enough to earn a 99-run lead.
Hobart's second innings was similar to its first. McDermott and Khawaja again made sixties, Peter Nevill made a fifty, but the other contributions weren't there. Of particular concern was a three ball duck for Marcus Harris. Behrendorff took four wickets again, but it was Harry Conway's five-for that was the most notable performance. This set up a chase of 230 in two and a half sessions for the Thunder.
Will Pucovski, take a bow! 154* made a tricky chase look easy. Renshaw picked up a duck, but Hughes played a lovely support knock and got a fifty in reward. While many of Hobart's bowlers will be disappointed, Michael Hogan got both wickets to fall.

Some encouraging signs were shown by a clearly second-string Melbourne lineup. Daniel Drew showed promise with his 84 up top, then Glenn Maxwell provided 68 once he was dismissed. The wickets were as shared as the overs for NT, with Brendan Doggett and Kane Richardson picking up three each.
Beau Webster take a bow! He came in at 1/36 and only departed trying to accelerate with the tail, in between bringing up a relatively rare FC hundred for the big man. Jake Weatherald also made it to fifty, while the tail wagged even after Webster's dismissal thanks to Kane Richardson. It was a mixed bowling effort for Melbourne - Jackson Coleman picked up four wickets and Mitch Perry showed great economy, but neither Will Sutherland nor Lloyd Pope showed much.
Oh dear. The game looked to be meandering to a draw, but a real lack of spirit from Melbourne's - second string admittedly - top order has given NT a real chance. The lower order was much more commendable - some runs from Sutherland and a wagging tail turned 5/63 into 201 - but that has set up a chase of 229 in two sessions. Scott Boland is the biggest reason why - he's continued his current form with a five wicket hall, while Hayden Kerr also showed skill in taking 3/25 from 22 overs. One less player bowled, too!
The chase looked on as long as Jake Weatherald was in at the crease. His dismissal, castled by Jackson Bird (in the same way as first innings hero Beau Webster), ended any chance of the win and saw Webster and D'Arcy Short play for the draw. Bird dismissed both openers, but while Will Sutherland improved his economy rate, nobody else showed any penetration.

Josh Hazlewood take a bow! Six wickets resulted in a substandard first innings score for Sydney. Tom Cooper played a role in two valuable partnerships - with Bryce Street and then Josh Philippe - but after his dismissal, the rest of the order crumbled.
Perth suffered top order issues that left them 4/36 (where have I heard that score before?) and 7/116 before Jack Wildermuth turned up. His fifty provided a lead for his team when they looked likely to fall short of a small first innings target. Jhye Richardson put up a performance worthy of his incredible rating, taking five inexpensive wickets. Concerningly, though, Hatzoglou was not very well liked by the game. To put up a competitive total, NT needed one of Jake Weatherald and D'Arcy Short to fire. Short's failure and Weatherald's dismissal to a sharp catch from Peter Forrest one short of his fifty consigned them to a collapse. Tom Andrews did survive for 87 balls, ensuring they would play out the fifty overs, but thanks to the three headed pace monster of Starc, Neser and Wes Agar, who took all nine wickets, and some tight bowling from Henriques and Jono Cook, they couldn't pass 196.
No Heat player made it to fifty either, but Joe Burns was good enough to almost get there and better contributions from the lower order allowed for a coast home. Josh Lalor was effective with the ball, removing Finch and Forrest, but the rest of the bowling attack wasn't very well managed (@Aislabie , I'll need some DNBs for you next time).

Perth's innings was anchored by Josh Inglis's lovely 82. Peter Handscomb also batted nicely for his 50 but neither he nor those who followed could get the required acceleration to post more than a mediocre 229. James Pattinson's 2/37 highlighted the bowlers.
Chasing a low-ish total, Adelaide capitulated. Steve Smith made a fifty, but it chewed up 94 balls, and several players who made fast starts got themselves out. Josh Hazlewood predictably took wickets, but the surprise best bowler was Xavier Bartlett who took 3/32.
