Australia's openers put up another fabulous opening stand falling just one short of a hundred. Victor Trumper scored his second half-century on the trot.

A poor effort by the middle order saw Canada squander the brightest of starts and go along the same path as their North American rivals. They could barely score anything off Hugh Trumble either.

Another Solid Performance by top order. They gave aus a solid platform to build on and then small contributions from others led us to a good looking score.
Good to see every bowler picking up wickets. Hugh Trumble kept it very very tight giving only 1.50 runs per over. :)

1900 Olympic Games Final preview - Great Britain vs Australia

640px-England_v_Australia_1899.jpg

There were no surprises regarding the final this time. Great Britain and Australia, the two nations that form the core of the cricketing world will be playing each other. This time though, they will be battling for Olympic Gold rather than the Ashes urn.

Both teams made it through to the final by winning all of their matches in the lead up. Great Britain overwhelmed each and every opponent they were pitted against. Australia suffered a couple of close calls against New Zealand and Argentina, but hung on tight to eventually win.

Great Britain's batting lineup featuring the likes of Archie MacLaren, Johnny Tyldesley, KS Ranjitsinhji, Stanley Jackson and Gilbert Jessop has performed a lot better than the one they had four years back which was mostly reliant on WG Grace. Five of the ten batsmen to cross hundred runs for the competition and the only two to score individual centuries come from their side. The superb talents of Tom Hayward, their second highest run-getter in 1896 and CB Fry haven't needed to do much more than carry the drinks.

Their bowlers have also been a class apart from the rest with spearheads Tom Richardson (12 wickets at 8.25) and Bill Lockwood (11 wickets at 9.55) picking up wickets at ridiculous ease and at a very miserly cost. Johnny Briggs, one of the biggest thorns for Australian cricketers over the years has also struck form at the right moment.

All this doesn't bode well for an Australian team that has looked far from it's dominant best, but the fact remains they haven't lost an Olympic encounter against Great Britain yet. Their beleaguered 1896 team miraculously won by just 2 runs in their one and only encounter that year. The Australians have also been on top in The Ashes ever since.

Great Britain remain favorites because of their superior style of play in the 1-day single innings format, but their dodgy record in finals is expected to make things pretty evenly matched.

Players to watch out for..

220px-Lot0622_jpg.jpg

Wilfred Rhodes has showed glimpses of his rare talent with his left-arm spin, but has been miscast as an opening batsman. If the British captain decides to move him down the order and make him focus more on his bowling instead, he could form a formidable threat bowling in tandem with the demonic Johnny Briggs to complement Great Britain's superbly in-form fast bowling duo of Richardson and Lockwood.

joe.jpg

The Australian captain Joe Darling has begun to strike the ball well in the past couple of matches, but has fallen in the 40s each time. A batsman of his class can nullify any bowling attack if he gets going.

Pitch & conditions

Though pitches during the tournament have mostly been of sub-standard quality, the matches featuring Great Britain have seen the pitch quality improve a great deal. If that happens again, this should be a pitch were teams put up a par score of 200-220.

Likely XIs

25px-Flag_of_the_United_Kingdom.svg.png
Australia: 1 Joe Darling (capt), 2 Victor Trumper, 3 Syd Gregory, 4 Harry Graham/Frank Iredale, 5 Clem Hill, 6 Monty Noble, 7 Hugh Trumble, 8 James Kelly (wk), 9 Ernie Jones, 10 Charles Eady, 11 Bill Howell

25px-Flag_of_the_United_Kingdom.svg.png
Great Britain: 1 Archie MacLaren (capt), 2 Tom Hayward/CB Fry/Bobby Abel, 3 Johnny Tyldesley, 4 KS Ranjitsinhji, 5 Stanley Jackson, 6 Gilbert Jessop, 7 Bill Storer (wk), 8 Bill Lockwood, 9 Johnny Briggs, 10 Wilfred Rhodes/Jack Hearne, 11 Tom Richardson

Stats

- Gilbert Jessop has hit a total of 7 sixes, the same as the entire Australian team put together.

- Jessop and Archie MacLaren have scored the only two centuries in the history of Olympic cricket. That too in the same match.

- Johnny Tyldesley has scored 220 runs from 4 matches at an average of 73.33, 38 more than WG Grace managed from the same number of matches in 1896.

- Of the four batsmen to average more than 50 in the tournament, three come from Great Britain. The only non-British player to average more than 50 is the German-born Paul Clauss of the Mixed Team.

- Monty Noble has scored 52 runs at a strike rate of 35.62, the slowest among batsmen with at least 50 runs in the tournament.

- Hugh Trumble's economy rate of 2.36 is the best for any player to have bowled at least 20 overs in the tournament. Better than even Jack Hearne's record of 2.48 in the 1896 Games.

Top Class performance from the Team, especially Johnny Briggs,Archie MacLaren & Johnny Tyldesley. A bit concerned about Ranjitsinhji's recent form. So we're into the final once again but this time against the Aussies..

Well, last time around we ended up 15 runs short of victory during the Final, Bowling wasn't much effective either. Even though the stats favoured us, But let's keep our heads up and hope for the best:).

Australia finished with a score of 207. Definitely not an unchaseable target, but a very tricky one while batting second on French wickets.

Second innings will be posted later.

Good effort by Aussies. When we lost Trumper & gregory early , darling & Graham took aus in a better position . After that Clem Hill & Noble did what the team needed. 207 is a good fighting total and we got the bowlers who can do it for us. Lets see by How many runs we win this. :D

The Australian captain Joe Darling batted sensibly along with Harry Graham to steer his team forward. The pair consistently kept the ball on the ground and ran between the wickets with good effect to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Great Britain were forced to settle for a Silver medal for the second successive time despite being the most dominant team of the tournament. United States won Bronze after beating their Canadian rivals in the Bronze playoff.

Not to be an ass, but why don't we at least share the bronze with Canada? If there's no bronze match or clear difference in the standings then the medal is shared. We both lost to the same two teams

USA and Canada to fight for bronze

Pressure from the US public and a series of logical arguments that couldn't be refuted has led the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to schedule a winner-takes-all "Bronze playoff" at the very last minute to decipher this season's bronze medalists for cricket.

The Bronze playoff will be a 30-over affair instead of the usual 50-over version used for official Olympic status matches. The match shall not count as an official Olympic match, which means the statistics gathered from it won't affect those of the official 1900 Olympic tournament.

Canada were originally handed the bronze medal despite finishing with the same number of victories and losing to the same teams as their North American rivals.

In that case, the United States will gratefully go unchanged for the bronze medal match. The only slight tweak is that Bart King will be promoted to number three to go on the attack in the early overs.

(No pressure, but if we don't win this we look a little daft!)

Awesome !! Gold for Aussies. I knew we have capability to restrict them and our did exactly the same. Those 2 overs of Trumper led us to victory. Trumble was again our top bowlers.

Great to win the 1900 Olympics after settling for just bronze in 1896. Thanks for another well presented and managed Olympics VC. :yes

Arthur Wood rescued the Americans after another poor start by the top order. It was then up to Reynolds Brown to some quick runs towards the end, which he did quite well.
