As the two teams take a break between the Test match and One-Day Internationals, we take a few minutes to get acquainted with our captain.
So, Fusco, what first got you into cricket?
Well, I had played Kilikiti all through my youth, just like most people have in our country. My first experience of cricket was when I went to New Zealand to study. It took a little while, but I found that the skills I'd learned playing Kilikiti were pretty easy to apply to cricket.
But rather than keep playing in New Zealand, you brought the game home?
Yes I did - Kiribati has never had the chance to shine in any sports before, and it seemed important that we try to succeed in cricket.
That must have seemed pretty distant though - there was only one player!
I guess it was pretty distant, but there was more than one player. I came across a couple of lads from Banaba and Tarawa while I was in New Zealand, as well as a couple of others who were quite keen to come with us and get cricket started over here.
And are they all in the national team now?
Yes they are. Arono, Hamuera, Keeti, Raharui and myself of course.
Kilikiti players were taught to play with a straight bat, although most of the best players learned the game in New Zealand.
How did you become captain of your team?
It sort of happened by default. Nobody else really wanted to do it, so I just took up the job. I've never had any real problems taking responsibility for things, so it made sense to try and make that a part of the team culture.
How did you manage to create cricket grounds in Kiribati?
Well, flat spaces were no problem - the highest spot on South Tarawa is three metres. The real problem was open spaces. In the end, we negotiated with some football grounds to lay wickets in the middle of them. Artificial of course, as we have only really got sand. So it plays great, but the outfield is a problem.
Will you be able to host international matches?
We're going to try - we've arranged a quadrangular with some really good teams. It's going to be pretty low-scoring, but we're trying our best.
What are the long term plans?
We'd like to raise enough money to lay an artificial surface for the entire ground. That would be difficult though, because Kiribati is a very poor country. The Knockout Cup prize money will go towards it, as will our sponsorship from Trade & Invest.
What about your plans for the next game?
I can't tell you too much, but we're going to unleash our spinners. We always played Kilikiti with a rubber ball that spun loads, so there are a lot of spinners in Kiribati.
And finally, what could cricket mean to Kiribati?
Foreign investment, hopefully. And a bit of the international limelight now and then.
