DG- Welcome to the Niaz stadium. Im david Gower and welcome to what promises to be an exciting match between these two nations. I have Tony Greig alongside me in the commentary box. Whats your view of this pitch.

TG- Well David, this pitch is flat and hard. There will be nothing in it for the bowlers, except maybe a little movement in the air. If the bowling team doesnt use the new ball wisely, they could be spending a few days in the field. Definatly a bad toss to lose.

DG- Ok Tony, thanks for that. We can now go down to the field for the all important coin toss.

DG- Well Nz have won the toss then, Flemming saying we will bat first. So the early advantage goes to New Zeleand Tony.

TG- Yes it does David, but i dont think this pitch will deteriate much, i wouldnt be suprised if this ended in a draw.

DG- My prediction is an English win, anyway enough guesswork lets get straight down to the action as England take the field.

Day 1 Session 1

DG- England made early use of the new ball. There's just a hint of movement in the air and Harmison managed to find the edge of Sinclair without scoring. New Zealand fought back sstrongly though in the form of Richardson and Flemming. Both have been unflapable so far without one mistake. Richardson has been quite defensive and looks as if hes going to play through these first few sessions. Flemming has been the aggressor, hitting 4 sixes off some pretty good bowling. What are your views Tony.

TG- Well David i think its clear what a good track this is. England should be thankfull they got one wicket. The game is in New Zealands hands, providing they bat sensible i see no reason why they cant bat England out of the game in the first innings. If a team scores 450+ in their first innings, its in theory pretty hard for them to lose that game.

DG- Ok Tony, thanks for that. The players are comming back onto the field, so lets get back to the action.

DG- Well it would all but appear that the commentators curse has struck once again. No sooner had i praised Richardson and Flemming, and they both got out to nothing shots. First ball after lunch, a wide long hop from Hoggard, Richardson goes after it and gets a faint edge to slip.

TG_ Yes David its not good batting to get out now. And of course when they got Flemming just a few overs later, you really felt the momentum swing the other way.

DG- Indeed, however credit must go to Styris and Astle. They came in when England had their tail up, abit of cloud cover in the sky. But they stayed there, dug in, and towards the end Astle played some incredible shots.

TG- Im a big fan of Astle, hes always been a positive cricketer. This pitch is made for him. Well New Zeleand really just need to keep going. I'd imagine we will be seeing Ashley Giles as the ball looks in a pretty bad way. So its make or break time.

DG- Thanks Tony, so an interesting final session ahead of us then. We will now go back to the field.

DG- Another interesting session of play their Tony

TG- Yes i think England have done ok, they've stuck in there when the pitch is offering nothing at all. New Zeleand have dopne a good job in terms of the run rate, but they have lost to many wickets in my opinion already.

DG- I suppose New Zeleand will be dissapointed. You look at the amount of players that have got starts, but havent gone on to convert it into anything big. But they will say, well the whole team has chipped in. If they can get towards and maybe beyong 400, i think they will have done a pretty good job.

TG- Well David, they will have the runs on the board, then England have the job of chasing them down.

DG- Who do you think has been Englands best bowler so far?

TG- Well id have to say Harmison. His pace and bounce has been effective on this pitch. He was unlucky to have two dropped catches go against him. Hoggard has also been excellent, pitching the ball up, giving at least some chance to swing.

DG- It was a great knock from Astle wasnt it?

TG- A blazing knock, however you have to question him getting out to giles, just a few overs before the new ball. With what was really a nothing shot.
