The tournament will be played over two years. Each team will play with six other opponents, three at home and three away. Each series will consist of between two and five Test matches. Therefore all participants will not play the same number of Tests, but will play the same number of series. England are touring New Zealand in October/November (?) for 2 tests and 5 t20s. Are those 2 tests not included in the world test championships then? If so, why not?

There are a lot of series apart from these above mentioned series that are not part of World Test Championship. The original FTP that was released 7-8 years back has games scheduled up until 2023 WC. I have no idea why few series are part WTC and few are not. Any series involving Ireland, Afghanistan and now suspended Zimbabwe are also not part of WTC.

Points table and index updated after India's win over West Indies in 2nd Test. India move up the table with 120 points. Highest run scorer and wicket taker remains same.

But number of series remains the same right ? So it doesn't matter a lot as the points will be distributed evenly. Even if they don't play for that long they can stay in the contention by winning those matches.

It seems a wierd way of calculating points to be honest: seems like it is turned on its head. Does each team
Play the same amount of test series length types in the end? Apart from the Ashes who plays 5 match series?

Great work on the thread!

Its definitely more convoluted than it needs to be. Feels like it would have made more sense to either use the same number of matches or series per team, and give a set number of points per match/series win. This whole 120 points divided by the number of matches per series gives a skewed look to the table

Only England-India series and Australia-England series are 5 match series. Rest all are mostly 2-4 match series.

That is what bothers me, a 120 point that India got awarded is not equal to what England or Australia will be awarded after winning the series. Also its not of the same quality. Not against India and the win they had against West Indies, it was sheer dominance but things are just not correct.

We should have a standard 3 match series except for Ashes or India England which is 5 match.

According to me this is how the Test Championship should be

  1. Each team plays the other twice home and away.
  2. Each series consist of 3 test matches, so each team plays 6 matches against the same opposition home and away.
  3. Instead of 2 year cycle, have the championship for a 4 year period to accommodate home and away.

Meanwhile Afghanistan, Ireland, Zimbabwe and a 4th team battle out against each other and other teams in those 4 years and are ranked 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th accordingly.

The bottom two teams in World Test Championship gets relegated and top two in last 4 gets promoted to test championship.

This will give test cricket its due respect.

The 4th team should be Bangladesh
