Is 'Wait til you get to the Gabba' now the biggest sledging backfire in the history of cricket?

I want to know what you think of this? I've always found Paine very funny with the sledging. I for one didn't find anything wrong with what he said. I think it's important we realise that we don't over sterilise our sport and allow people to express themselves.

Just feel a bit of an issue was made about this unnecessarily and I've actually seen a lot of other drama in India-OZ series.

True. I think the issue was overhyped - probably because the low blow about 'your team mates dont like you' was a low blow after a fairly funny bit of banter between Ashwin and Paine. Nothing too bad, but it was a very lame comeback

And on top of that Paine had gotten into trouble with his expletive filled dissent to the umpire, which is why he apologized mainly.

This all backfired big time, but thats a different tale

No problem with what he said. It's just funny how he ended up with egg on his face. I think Paine even said he made himself look a bit foolish after that match. Ashwin, possibly more than any Indian player, gives it back too.

The media, fans blow these things out of proportion, just like the Smith thing. They want to spice up the rivalry but there's more than enough just on the field. On the whole it seems quite friendly rivalry (a lot of these guys play together in IPL).

However, I do think the Indian team should get t-shirts with it printed on to wear in training when the Aussies show up in India for a test series. Or tattoos of it. Or send a big Christmas card with it on to Tim Paine. Or take out a billboard outside CA Headquarters with it written on it.

The dust will take a lot of time to settle after the day that it was yesterday!! Absolute madness after how the day started with Pujara and Gill fending it all off and going super slow. A draw looked most likely and India were pegged at 1% chance to win, at lunch on Day 5. From there, the way they turned the screws back on Australia, was just ASTONISHING!!

Pujara - what a man!! Took innumerable body blows from Cummins and Hazlewood and yet keep bloody mindedly staving off Aussie attempts to breach into India's brittle batting lineup. Imagine if Pujara had folded up early with India not having eaten much into the target, Australia could have romped home. His innings is gold, one that unfortunately isn't appreciated enough.

Pant - I accept that I did not believe in Pant's abilities and this forum's old members would know it. I think in purist lines when it comes to test cricket and thought Pant doesn't have it in him. But I guess I also have to start understanding that pitches around the world aren't as challenging as they used to be, and for Pant, all it takes is a session or two of mad cap batting to change a game on its head. I stand humbly proven wrong. India better start living with any mistakes Pant might make behind the stumps, in the hope that he gets better, because his batting is literally taking off from here on. If he bats in home tests. this guy can make daddy hundreds.

Gill - bonafide superstar! Waiting to see a lot of this guy in the upcoming future. The way he blasted Starc out of the attack was sensational. This guy's a purist, and I hope he achieves to his potential because that means a world of good for India's future

Washington Sundar - for his debut test and coming in without much of FC games, he played like a champion. I can see social media calling him "Ashwin's doppelgänger" and its true and he's even better! The kind of batting he displayed in this test means, he will always have a huge leg up over his peers when Indian squads are picked in the future for overseas tests. His attitude and personality means he has the stuff to keep himself grounded

Can keep going, but I will stop here. Huge shout out to the Indian feeder system (credits to Rahul Dravid, the IPL and the BCCI) for the DEPTH that has been seen in this series. Yes the IPL is helping us feed in new and exciting and confident players into tests also. Ranji prepares them for the format, but IPL gives them the confidence and ability to withstand international rigors. And full credits to Rahane for the composure and the calmness with which he led the side after all that happened in Adelaide. I am not getting into the captaincy debate again (I have made my stance clear many times), but time will take care of things!!

The decision to switch on the stump mics 24x7, the exponential growth of social media and the deluge of opinions/trolls/memes that come along with it, is all contributing to this! In today's generation, even cricketers who are involved in the on field battles take the opportunity to log into social media and retweet a meme/troll and give it a lot of fuel (e.g. Ashwin has done this after the win yesterday).

It all adds a lot to the drama and TRP's and translates into money... That's all there is to it.

For me personally Thakur was the man of the match. I know Pant played a fabulous innings but it was no greater than Pujara's or Gill's. The test match was gone for all money when Shardul walked in. For him to pick 7 wickets in the game and make that 60 odd! He was my MOM.

Just to add a note on sledging, in today's time mental health is on the forefront and gets a lot of attention (long overdue) and sledging becomes a bigger issue in such cases - because there is a fine line between funny banter and personal/derogatory comments. It is considered a sensitive issue. That is probably another reason, such incidents do blow up in the media a lot more than before - even some Australian outlets had called out Paine's antics as inappropriate.

Sledging can be fun and can work for either player and should be part of the game. But the imaginary lines should not be crossed (Easier said than done)

Picking a MoM for this test was incredibly hard. Shardul played a mighty hand in turning this test upside down. Gill kickstarted the push that led us towards a miraculous victory. Pujara was the architect who helped pace the chase. Sundar got wickets, he got big runs. Siraj got the 5-fer and helped bowl Australia out before they could get more runs.

But yes, thinking deep and hard, the moment when Shardul walked in during the first innings, was an absolute turning point and his innings along with Sundar and his 7 wickets probably had the biggest impact on the test as a whole

To be very honest with you, I think and still feel that this Aussie side is a wolf in sheep clothing. There are so many moments I feel they can snap. I rather they be themselves and just keep sandpapers out.

I'm anyway someone who feels that coaches have too much control over teams and the way they play these days. Luckily, our coach is just there to give bombastic comments and make a fool out of himself.

I wanted to post the same thing. I also think Shardul deserved it more. But nevertheless it is just a formality. The amount gets distributed equally in the team as far as I know.

Bharat Arun - the bowling coach deserves a whole lot of credit.

The current bowlers in the team do rate him very highly in whatever Interview I have seen the bowlers do mention him.

Even Siraj & Saini were supposedly spotted by him when they were given the domestic trials.

We talk about A team and Dravid but this man deserves a whole lot of appreciation.
