Life without the internet?

I don't know why we should subject ourselves to such limitations. The internet is just the latest generation of information dispensing.

Think back to before we had really any technology. The only way to get information was through word of mouth. Then we got to the printing press, then radio, then television and then the Internet.

The porn argument is silly, imo. Should we stop reading because Playboy also makes printed material? Should we stop listening to radios in our cars because Howard Stern exists? Should we stop watching TV because of trash reality TV (we probably should).

The access to information has been unprecedented, but then every evolution of information media has improved access to information.

The main problem here is ADDICTION which most people are confined to.

Exactly right, people i know are on facebook as soon as they wake up!!

And all they are doing is updating their "status", i mean i cant see whats changed in the few hours they have been asleep, its so blimming sad.

My missus shut her account down after i found out how much time she was spending on it, it was getting well out of hand, and as mother of 2 young kids i'd like to know how she had the time to do it.

She is a different person now she has lost the temptation to see what her silly mate has ate for breakfast...

unfortunately, am one of those people! :facepalm
only difference being, its Gmail and planetcricket for me instead of facebook.

i really need to cut down my browsing time. endlessly watching youtube vids is another addiction i need to withdraw asap.

Aditya is right. Facebook is addicted. I still know I was never interested in creating FB account but last year when I created mine FB account, it's the day I regret the most :facepalm

on an average, how much time do you spend each day of FB ?

I am more of a moderate guy. Why go the the extremes of getting addicted to or total isolation from internet?

Internet is useful in a lot of ways ;) Why blame it for your own lack of will power :D

if only it was that easy................

I have no TV in my room so I can't watch any TV channels or play my PS3. All I have is my laptop and my textbooks so there is really nothing I can do but play ICC, do homework or surf the internet while I am in my room. When I go back home, it isn't such a problem and my internet usage is pretty normal.

I can pretty much control my addictiveness to Planet Cricket and FB, though once in a day if I have a go at them, its difficult to leave em.:(
Ah!But still I will rate Internet as more of a advantage to us.:)
It can allow us to meet our old friends, our relatives , etc. and is also useful for many commercial purposes.:yes
But still its better to keep small children to keep em off the net, as they are more likely to give up the personal details.

Such a heavy topic for general discussion :p

I think internet has what made laptops and computers popular in the first place.
I mean I really cannot think of uses for my computer without the internet.
Ofcourse it will have disadvantages. But then heck, everything in the world has disadvantages. One just need to learn to circumnavigate around those disadvantages (it is what I think atleast).

Even nuclear energy has drawbacks, serious drawbacks, still we're using it.

*It seem you aren't aware of the pornographic sites? Are you?

Of course, I'd agree that these websites lead to the extensive distribution/viewership but even if you ban them people will find alternatives. For instance, some guys in my schools bought porno DVDs and distributed them to other interested people. :facepalm
*People are addicted to Social Networking sites. They spend hours in activities like chatting, uploading their pic for just gettin' a good comment.

Agreed. Facebook especially in India is nothing but an absolute humbug. The most exasperating thing is that that people update their status using some very inspiring quotes, and don't even know what's that quote's about.

*Nothing is preserved your every personal information can be taken away.

*Due to these online payment facilities, thousands of bank accounts are being hacked.

That is our own folly TBH.

Blimey cant believe the negative comments towards porn, is their something wrong with you people?

Porn is legandary, long live porn!

:clap:clap for the porn

FB's so overrated. I go on their once or twice a day for 10 minutes or so at a time, but I don't sit on there all day, and I haven't posted anything in terms of status updates for like a year. More or less the only thing I use it for is to talk to people. Half of peoples statuses are massive csb's, but every now and then a good one might one come along. I'm also not a fan of inviting every person you see in the street like so many people do, hence why I haven't invited anyone since I first signed up, the only way I get more friends is if someone invites me.

In terms of life without the internet, I think I could do it, but I probably couldn't without TVs and computers in general.
