The Momentum 1 Day Cup (formerly known as the 1 Day Cup, MTN Domestic Championship and Standard Bank Cup) is the premier domestic one-day cricket competition of South Africa, its matches having List A status. Matches are usually played partly under lights as day/night matches and occasionally get higher crowds than the Test matches.The tournament has been played since the 1982–83 season when five teams competed in the Benson and Hedges Series. The tournament gradually expanded, with eleven teams taking part from 1994–95 onwards, as more and more teams were promoted from the B groups of South African cricket. Two seasons later, it was renamed the Standard Bank League, and then the Standard Bank Cup, but the same teams competed, until Namibia were admitted in 2002–03. The following season was the last with regional teams – in 2004–05 the United Cricket Board of South Africa reorganised the competition, with six franchise teams playing each other home and away. This system has remained, though the tournament was known as MTN Domestic Competition until the 2010–11 season and the 1 Day Cup for the 2011–12 season.

The Highveld Lions is the name used by the combined Gauteng and North West first class cricket teams in South Africa.

The home venues are the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg and Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. The combined team plays in the Sunfoil Series first class cricket competition as well as in the Momentum 1 Day Cup and Ram Slam T20 Challenge limited over competitions.

The Sunfoil Dolphins is the name used by the KwaZulu-Natal cricket team when it plays in the South African Sunfoil Series first class competition; also in the Momentum 1 Day Cup and RamSlam Pro 20 Series limited over competitions. The team's home venue is Kingsmead Cricket Ground, Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal is the only team that has not merged with another for the Sunfoil Series

The Titans (known as The Unlimited Titans for sponsorship reasons) is a northernmost top-level cricket franchise in South Africa. Its member unions are the Easterns Cricket Union and Northerns Cricket Union. The home venues of the Titans are SuperSport Park,Centurion and Willowmoore Park, Benoni.

The Titans play in the Sunfoil Series first class competition, the Momentum 1 Day Cup and RamSlam Pro 20 Series. They have beenSupersport Series and MiWay T20 Championship champions in the past decade, and have qualified to participate in the 2012 Champions League Twenty20, held in South Africa.

The Chevrolet Warriors is the name used by the combined Eastern Province and Border first class cricket teams in South Africa. The home venues of the Warriors are St George's Park, Port Elizabeth and Buffalo Park, East London.

The combined team plays in the Sunfoil Series first-class competition and also in the MTN Domestic Championship and the Standard Bank Twenty20 limited over competitions. The Chevrolet Warriors are the 2009/2010 MTN Domestic Championship and Standard Bank Twenty20 winners. They finished as runners-up to the Chennai Super Kings in the 2010 Champions League Twenty20.

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras often shortened to Cape Cobras is the name used since the 2005–06 season by the combinedWestern Province and Boland first class cricket teams in South African domestic cricket. The joint Western Province and Boland team was named Western Province Boland for the 2004–05 season. The Cobras home venues are Newlands Cricket Ground, Cape Townand Boland Bank Park, Paarl.The Cobras used to be called Western Province until Boland Cricket and Western Province merged in 2005.
