Australia elected to bat

Australia's captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat in the final ODI against England at The Lords in London on Sunday. It is a bit cold here at The Lords with overcast conditions and the decision to bat has suprised most of the commentators.

Australia go into the match without Brett Lee who was recuperating from an ankle injury while England replaced A.Wharf with S.Jones. Jason Gillespie replace Brett Lee for this crucial encounter.

Australia 17/1 after 5 overs

The first fours overs produced a total of 8 runs while Australia played with caution. Unfortunately for Australia Harmison struck in the 4th over by getting Hayden out LBW by bowling a yorker. Gilchrist in the next over hit two fours in a row, first hooking Gough behind square leg and then rocking on to the back foot and hitting one through covers.

Gilchrist in good touch, Australia 36/1 after 10 overs

Both Australia and England would be equally happy with the outcome in the first 10 overs. Australia haven't lost too many wickets and would be very happy to see Gilchrist in excellent batting form. Gilchrist is not really setting the world on fire but is playing the ball on merit and this should cause a few concerns to Vaughan. Harmison and Gough have been bowling like a bowling machine and rarely giving any kind of width to the Australian batters. A good bowling effort by England and a decent batting effort by Australia in the first 10 overs.

Hayden LBW Harmison 2(12 balls)
Gilchrist 26*(36 balls, 3 fours)
Ponting 8*(12 balls)

Gough 5-0-25-0
Harmison 5-0-11-1

S, download and install the attached bowling style changes. I am playing with it at the moment and this adds new dimension to batting. The bowlers bowl excellent line and length. The slower balls are now kept well by the keeper and for the first time the slower balls seem effective. They come in as a leg spin or a slowish off spin.

Just play few overs with it to get used to it just in case. There is nothing major change but just that it makes the bowlers bowl a little better. The bounce seems better too as they come in close to the stumps or may be I am imagining. Make sure you install this one to get more out of your batting.

and come on England!!!
:D

Yes S, with GI 3.

Australia moves to 68/1 after 15 overs

32 runs were added in the last 5 overs by Australia as S.Jones struggled to settle to a line. Australia are settling down fairly nicely and have taken their score to 68/1 after 15 overs which is not so bad considering the way Harmison has bowled. Harmison beat both Ponting and Gilchrist's bat on many occassions and hit Gilchrist in the head once too.

While Gilchrist has settled down pretty well it is the Australian captain Ricky Ponting picking the gaps very well almost every other ball. There are no big hittings so far but just little nudges here and there but placing through the gaps has been sublime so far.

The score at the end of 15 overs :

Australia 68/1

Gilchrist 36*(47 balls, 4 fours)
Gilchrist 28*(32 balls, 1 four)

Extras : NB 1

Gough 5-0-25-0
Harmison 7 -0-20-1
S.Jones 3-0-22-0

Champ, if you asking me if I have default ones I do not. You may want to use the new list.txt file that is in the Cricket2004 forums to backup your current angles.

The pressure sits now on England

With none of th England bowlers looking like taking a wicket but settling to a defensive line and length Australia's scoring has been void of any risk. Flintoff and Giles pegged back Australia a bit between 15-20 overs when they only conceeded under 20 runs but Australia fought back by scoring over 30 runs in the last 5 overs. It has been a patient game by both Australia and England. Australia is not taking any chances and are just placing the ball in the gaps picking up singles and occassionally hits to the fence. England seems to have struck to a defensive line waiting for Australia to commit a mistake.

Earlier Gilchrist was meted out a shocker of a LBW decision. Off the bowling of Giles, the ball was well outside the leg stump, way over the knee roll and all the three stumps were visible from the umpire's angle but still Gilchrist was ruled LBW. Gilchrist was unfortunate to miss out on a well deserved half century by just 1 run.

Ponting reached a well deserved 50 in only 52 balls. Ponting looked his best in the series in the game timing really well and picking gaps at will. Austrlia will be banking on Ponting and Martyn to set a good score for their bowlers to defend. After Gilchrist departed Martyn strode to the wicket and straight away started to middle everything. Martyn seemed to have carried his form from the last match but England must be ruing for having dropped him when he was only on 2 in the slips. Meanwhile England has been a bit unlucky having seen couple of edges not having gone to the fielders.

Australia : 128/2 after 25 overs

Ponting 58*(59 balls, 5 fours)
Martyn 17*(16 balls, 1 four)

Gough 5-0-25-0
Harmison 7 -0-20-1
S.Jones 3-0-22-0
Giles 4-0-27-1
Flintoff 5-0-25-0
Vaughan 1-0-70

Trescothick to try his luck with the ball

With Australia sitting pretty on 173/2 after 34 overs and both Vaughan (0/25 off 3 overs) and S.Jones (0/33 of 4 overs) Trescothick has been brought into the attack to what looks like fill in the 3 overs for the 5th bowler. Gough was brought back into the attack and he bowled well to conceed only 5 runs of those to overs.

At the moment Martyn has taken over the quick scoring and has hit atleast 4 fours in the last couple of overs. S.Jones coming for severe punishment by Martyn as well as Vaughan. Ponting is now looking set for a hundred with 83*(83 balls) and Martyn looks set for another off those crucial knocks on 43(43 balls).

After 40 overs Australia are on 213/3

Trescothick as a matter of fact has been probably the better bowler on display barring Harmison. So far Trescothick has bowled 3 overs for 15 runs and also bowling Martyn out for 62(63). Ponting is now just 1 short of his 100 and is looking good for more.

England are not letting any fours since the last update and there has probably been not more than 1 four since the 34th over. There are plenty of singles in offer but if Australia has to make the best of the situation they need fours often while the singles won't hurt. Gough once again bowled very tightly not allowing either batsman to chance their arms. Thanks to Gough and Trescothick Australia are not looking like getting near 300. By the looks of it Australia will have to make to do with 275-285 runs.

Australia move on to 250/5 after 45 overs

Trescothick removed both Ponting and Martyn while Flintoff got Clarke for just 7 but Symonds strode to the crease and has smashed 22 runs off only 17 balls to take Australia to a dominating 250 after 45 overs.

Not a bad score by Australia :)

They should make atleast 285

Australia score 279/8 off 50 overs

Australia lost the plot in the last few overs and added a paltry 29 runs off the last 5 overs after it looked like Australia may reach 290. Although the score is good enough to defend another 10-15 runs would have most possibly been a very tough ask for England.

The England seamers Harmison, Gough and Flintoff bowled really well in the death to peg back Australia. After the departure of Ponting Australia could barely press on the accelarator apart from a cameo from Symonds.

Symonds finally got hold of Trescothick bowling and belted him around the park but then Vaughan had his seamers to fall back on in the last few overs. Once Symonds was out rest of the batters found it hard to even pick up couples let alone fours. In all Australia will be tad disappointed for not having scored at least 10-15 runs and England though will not be over the moon with their bowling effort will lest be happy they fought back yet again when it was required.
