New Zealand make handsome gains

New Zealand keep getting better. They had a good World Cup outing (although the decision not to play in Kenya was costly and foolish) and now they have actually won an ODI series on the subcontinent defeating both Pakistan and Sri Lanka!

Today's victory gives New Zealand (34.52) over five points and takes them to the sixth position in the Rediff ODI ratings. Sri Lanka (43.87)look an unhappy side and, although they are still fourth, they drop by over two points. It's hard to recognise this to be the same side that shared the ICC Champions Trophy in September 2002. Pakistan (37.68) are fifth, but no longer looking like the champion side that they were about a year ago.

Australia (73.00), already miles ahead of the rest, look set to get past the 75-barrier after their scorching 3-0 start against West Indies. India (51.91) are still glowing after the World Cup performance and remain second. But there could be minor worries ahead when the 12-month tournament window advances beyond July 2003 and India's big tournament wins start going out of the reckoning. West Indies (29.04) must seriously wonder why they are seventh when they could so easily be in the top four.

Table A shows the Rediff ODI rankings as on May 23, 2003. Since the Rediff ODI index (ODI RBI) combines two indices: the weighted index (WI) -- that considers the 'strength of the opposition' and the 'home-away' factor -- and the tournament index (TI) that rewards teams with a winning record in tournaments played during the last 12 months (the 'big match' performers), it gives a much better indication of the true current form of the top ODI-playing teams.

TABLE A: CURRENT ODI RANKINGS (as on May 23, 2003)
Team WI TI ODI RBI=
WI * 0.63299 + TI * 0.36701 Difference
21.4 to 23.5.03 Ranking
Australia 72.69 73.53 73.00 -0.52 1
India 48.19 58.33 51.91 +0.33 2
South Africa 59.26 26.47 47.22 -0.20 3
Sri Lanka 51.66 30.43 43.87 -2.27 4
Pakistan 43.14 28.26 37.68 -2.69 5
New Zealand 40.04 25.00 34.52 +5.15 6
West Indies 38.14 13.33 29.04 -0.62 7
England 35.30 12.50 26.93 -0.67 8
Zimbabwe 15.24 13.33 14.54 -0.01 9

The ICC ODI ratings show India (104) still at the fifth place with New Zealand (101) in hot pursuit. Other placings are Australia (137), South Africa (122), Pakistan (110), Sri Lanka (106), West Indies (98), England (98) and Zimbabwe (65). It is reassuring to note that ICC keeps reviewing its rating schemes and keeps coming up with something smarter. Perhaps ICC will review its ICC ODI rating scheme too and come up with the smart discovery that India are the second -- not fifth -- best ODI team in the world today!

Details

The weighted index (WI) is calculated based on the ODI scorecard that appears below as Table B. Details of the WI calculation appear elsewhere on Rediff.
