Patches & Editing- Demo and Full Version

Really depends on whether the game is going to keep the ashes deadline. Many games have been delayed in the past, and BLIC might get added to that list.

I think they're trying hard to release it before Ashes. I think Codies should set up an online modding community to increase the efficiency of sharing mods and really communicating with the userbase. The only problem from their point would be that their programming may be out in the open as a result. Which will prevent future products from being radically different.

An open-source cricket game would be perfect. Any takers?

Open Source sounds very hunky-dory in principle. But you tell me, why should swordfish or any developer work many hours just to release their code to the public for free ? Open Source works for a hobbyist, it can't work for commericial enterprises, atleast in its current avatar.

I am not saying Swordfish should go open-source (they obviously haven't seeing that Codies have put their own money into it) but that an open-source game would work from scratch. Open-source programs are always much more efficient than commercial programs, because there is no profit margin. And with the modding community, that is not really going open-source for Codies. They are just setting up a platform for gamers to share mods, be it squad updates or gameplay patches. This would mean (a) the viewers are happy with the game, (b) codies don't have to produce the patches themselves and (c) long-term gaming!

Ok. I see your point now. An open source cricket game developed from scratch by the modding community would be as close to perfect as is possible. But the major problem with any such enterprise is going to be money . Infact, a PC member called "Scatter" tried to do this very thing as you may know, although I don't think his project was really open-source, but lack of money and the problem of interacting with co-developers who may be sitting in some other continent gave a quiet burial to that idea.

Sure, sure. That is always the problem. That is the problem with human life if you want to be philosophical. :p Nothing can be done without money. But if you look at it, nothing would have developed without money. As you said open-source is quite hobbyist because in the end you are doing the thing without expecting any remuneration except for paltry donations. I really don't know how open-source programming came into focus to start with. Sometimes you are just passionate about something and you do it for no reason at all. Sort of like duff and Cricket Master 2k5. I'm sure he'd agree that if he had gone open-source with a few other developers in his city, the product would be much more efficient and each person would not have to contribute as much. There may obviously be ego problems, though.

I think RG said that the game was most likely going to be hard to edit.

Judging by Codemasters most recent releases that I have looked at, editing will be pretty tough.

Well I hope they are, unless theres game editors released to make things much easier?

Well, we'd still want the data and graphics files to be easily editible, as game editors typically don't allow you to change stuff like kits, grounds or ai files.
