There is a misconception that these protests are only about Citizenship Amendment Bill. It is equally or more about the NRC bill which says that all people will be required to prove their citizenship in this country. They will have to produce papers as far back as 60 years ago (what a joke). All this is fine, but now starts the fun part
Of all the illegal immigrants identified (folks who can't produce their papers) non Muslims will get automatic citizenship from the govt if they say that they came to this country after persecution faced in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh. Everyone else will be kicked out. Which raises hundreds of questions, mainly that
1. Why just these 3 countries are singled out? What about the refugees from other neighboring countries who faced persecution?
2. If this is about partition time, and the logic is pak and bd were formed during post partition, then why is AFG included when it became a nation in 1930s itself
3. And most importantly, if Mr. X a non Muslim and Mr. Y a Muslim both are unable to produce documents, X will get citizenship whereas Y will be deported (god knows where), which is why Muslims especially are vehemently opposing this. This bill tries to show them as second class citizens in this country based on their religion and nothing else. A country which was not formed on religion basis to begin with
My take on this:
This is BJP and Amit Shah at its best. Election around the corner. Do something big, whether it makes sense or not. Distract the people and esp media from real issues like an economy in nosedive, unprecedented pollution, failing health and education systems.
Modi has so far not addressed this issue in media once, except for a snide communal remark. But he has come out to do rallies in Jharkhand asking voters to vote for BJP in ongoing elections. I started disliking Modi but now i feel pity for this man. Never thought he would turn so spineless with Amit shah taking the forefront of BJP now. They used to call Manmohan Singh a puppet of Sonia Gandhi. Modi is turning out to be a bigger joke a the hands of Amit Shah. Spineless
