He would have been a much better option than the likes of Mongia and a better keeper (if trained better) than Dravid who was also one of our most important batsmen. He would have definitely been a regular in any other era. Had he not participated in ICL, we might have seen him become one of the cornerstones of the current lineup too. The bloke possessed far too much potential that went unfulfilled.

Whatever might be the case, IMO he wasn't a good keeper. I only know him for his batting exploits and he was a certainly the best batsman in terms of quality in the domestic arena from 2007-2013

He was upset with the BCCI and so he cut off all ties with them, I guess.

He’s been having issues with the BCCI for a long time, not surprised that he’s chosen to ‘retire’. Wouldn’t be surprised if he popped up in a T20 league somewhere in the near future too, just to piss them off yet again.

It wont piss them off. Once you retire, you are free to play other T20 leagues in the world. Yuvraj has got permission to play some Canada league.

Hahahaha actually a lot of people are not happy with his decision and criticizing him. He is still young and has a lot of potential to play. His excuses for leaving test cricket are not acceptable. Underlying reason for leaving longer-format may be to earn more money

I really hope he plays for one more year for the T20 WC in Australia. South Africa should win the WC with Steyn picking up the last wicket.. that is my dream!

Arguably the greatest pace bowler to have played test cricket. His numbers are comparable to that of the greats from the 20th century despite having bowled on far more batsmen friendly pitches and conditions. His record in Asia, the graveyard for pace bowlers is outstanding too.

Test cricket is too toiling for a bowler. And with pitches not yet showing signs of improving the balance between bat and ball, expect more and more young bowlers to hang up their boots from tests early. And yes, he is not wrong in wanting to earn more money and exert his body less, in the shorter formats.

One of my absolute favorite fast bowler retires from the Red Ball cricket.Never seen a fast bowler dominate India in India with such authority still remember the 2008 series between India and SA where he single handedly ran through the strong Indian batting lineup bundling them for 80 allout in the first innings of the 2nd test he was an absolute joy to watch those outswingers he bowled with the 7'O clock cross seam wrist positions were impeccable and was able to reverse the ball as well.The runup , the action and the aggression he had perhaps makes him the most complete fast bowler of all time or one can say the greatest bowler atleast in the recent era.

Cricket will miss seeing such a great bowler and will never have somebody like a Dake Steyn.

Greatest fast bowler of the modern era. Period. Heads and shoulders above his peers. To have so much control on swing at such pace is a gift which helped him perform in conditions not conducive for fast bowling as well.

And personally my favorite south African cricketer from the past decade who had your eyes fixated on the screen every time he held the ball in his hand. The best part was the spirit with which he played the game. Lovely player
