Tutorial: Cartoonising

So here goes the tutorial for catoonising.....

select an image.I am using MS dhoni's image...
step1.gif

and our final image will be
step18.bmp

Use precuts if not than cut the extra portions in the image.

STEP 1:

double click the background layer and rename it as original
duplicate the original layer and rename it as outline
duplicate outline and rename it as layer1
add a new layer, name it as layer0 and keep its colour as in image below...(Later on after completing cartoonising you can change the backround)
Arrange layers in same order...and note turn off visibility of original layer

step2.gif

STEP 2

Select outline layer and make sure color palette is black for the foreground and white for the background.
defaultcolors.gif

Now select menu--> Filter -->Sketch --> Photocopy...
Set 'Detail' to 3.& Set 'Darkness' to 8.(You can set different values but should get something like this)

step3.gif

select menu-->Image --> Adjustments -->Threshold...
set threshold level so that you can get something like this...

step4.gif

STEP 3:

Duplicate the outline layer and name it as white. Now select the white layer and click on Image-->Adjustment-->Brightnness/Contrast...
Move the 'Brightness' slider all the way to the right (+100) and the 'Contrast' slider all the way to the left (-100).
And arrange the layers as in image below..

step5.gif

select layer outline and change its blending mode to 'Multiply'
Press 'd' to set the foreground color to black and background color to white.

defaultcolors.gif

On the Layers Palette, select the 'white' layer.
Click the 'Create new fill or adjustment layer' at the bottom of Layers Palette. On the popup menu, choose 'Solid Color...'
Pick the skin color and press ok..Rename it as skin

step6.gif

select paint bucket tool and select layer skin and fill the canvas with black color and you will get

step7.gif

Create a clipping mask between 'skin' layer and 'white' layer. Press Ctrl + G while the 'skin' layer is still selected. On the 'Layers Palette', click on the 'outline' layer while holding (pressing) the Ctrl button.
This will make selection mark over the Outline layer

step8.gif

press d and then x.....and you will get foreground colour as white and back as black..Choose 'Paint Bucket' tool, click inside the selection on the canvas to fill it with white..Press Ctrl + D to deselect the selection area.now we will get....something like below

step9.gif

deselect it(ctrl+d)
now we have to provide a little shading to give depth to the cartoon...

STEP 4:

duplicate layer0
and place the layer above outline layer...select layer0copy and apply gaussian blur...radius can be 2 to 4...

step10.bmp

Select menu: Filter :: Artistic :: Cotout...
Set 'Edge Simplicity' to 2.
Set 'Edge Fidelity' to 1.and level to 8 ...rename layer0 copy to shade...
and duplicate shade and rename it as tint..arrange the layers accordingly

step12.bmp

Turn visibility of the 'tint' layer off.Select shade.....and click Image-->Adjustment-->Threshold..Turn the slider right and left, experiment with it while looking at the preview.

step13.bmp

with magic wand tool select all white portion and delete them...and then set blending mode to 'Soft Light' opacity=60%

select tint and select and click Image-->Adjustment-->Threshold..
Turn the slider right and left, experiment with it while looking at the preview.
and experiment till you get something like this...

step14.bmp

select all black portion and delete them and change its blending mode to 'Soft Light'..opacity to 40%.So we are done now.....Now only thing left is colouring the cloths ,hairs etc....
step15.bmp

STEP 5:

On the Layers Palette, select the 'skin' layer.Click the 'Create new fill or adjustment layer' at the bottom of Layers Palette.

On the popup menu, choose 'Solid Color...'. A 'Color Picker' dialog box will be displayed. On the 'Color Picker' dialog box, pick a dark blue color for cap....
Click on the canvas to fill layer mask with black color...
press Ctrl+g to make it clipping mask.Again On the popup menu, choose 'Solid Color...'. A 'Color Picker' dialog box will be displayed. On the 'Color Picker' dialog box, pick a white color for eyes,teeth....
Click on the canvas to fill layer mask with black color...add as many layers as you need.....each for different color....and it will look like..

step16.bmp

Now that we've done preparing the layer for each color , we can start coloring each part of the picture.starting with cap. On the 'Layers Palette', select the layer with blue colorMake sure the foreground color is pure white. (Press 'X' if you have to switch foreground and background colors).Start painting the cap.Use a hard brush with the opacity set to 100%. Make sure that you zoom in when coloring, so that it is nice and tidy. (The clipping mask help us a lot here. It won't let the color run out of border)

step17.bmp

Do same for every part....teeth ,eyes, lips,logos,t-shirt....etc
and you will get...

step18.bmp
