Not just that, even Angelo Mathews & Dinesh Chandimal are dropped. That's how you respect your great players in Sri Lanka!!!!

Wait, they are dropped? I heard they were simply rested for this series.

They're neither rested or dropped, they've been completely axed. The Lankan selectors want to focus on selecting a younger side for the 2023 World Cup. The blokes who will not be a part of the squad going forward include Karunaratne, Mathews, Chandimal, Lakmal and Thisara Perera. This lines up with Perera retiring from international cricket completely at a rather young age of 32 as he does not play test cricket like the others too.

My thoughts on this? I think Karunaratne was axed a bit too soon to decide if it was the right move, he's widely respected in the team and is an excellent leader. With the bat, his overall figures look terrible but since his recall he hasn't been too shabby. He was supposed to be the Shai Hope in a side of hitters I assume. However unlike the latter, Karunaratne does not have a single century to his name till date which means that his anchoring isn't really going to lead you to a big total. At his best, he will offer you a fifty striking in the high 80s. In a modern ODI where you need to score 320-350 frequently, he is a liability if he does that and I understand that is the reason for him being dropped rather than his captaincy. Gunathilieke has also been very good recently and with Avishka and Kusal Perera in the frame of things, seems like a pragmatic if controversial decision.

I had no idea that Chandimal had recently played too (has played five ODI games since 2019 to be precise). Thought he was completely out of the frame of the white ball setup after being sacked as the captain. Another player who is a complete misfit for the modern white ball game. Perera's axing is also understandable, Shanaka is a much better player, more on him later. The former has been more of a batting all-rounder who doesn't fire often these days in any case. I'm unsure of Lakmal, he did not pick up a wicket in the last WC and will be 36+ in addition to being the key pacer in the test side but he does have the talent to still offer something. Either way, if you had to choose between keeping him in the tests or ODIs, it is an easy decision given that he is world class with the red ball in his hand.

Now Mathews for me is the big conundrum. I've heard that he has started bowling again, he is extremely talented with the bat too. However he has a questionable fitness record with a style of playing that does not suit a number five in ODIs. He's also scored 23 runs in four games versus West Indies since the WC. That is dreadful. However if I had to pick one player who I still would have wanted to play in the side for experience and usefulness, I'd pick Mathews especially if he will bowl 3-4 overs per game. Make him bat at four for a couple of more series before deciding his fate.

The real questionable move amidst all of this is handing the captaincy to Kusal Perera out of all people. Think he led his LPL side to the bottom of the table and he has not shown anything that screams "captaincy material" to me till date. Feels very much like a Mominul Haque like decision from the Lankans. He also might not even play if some of his competition actually step it up and show consistency that he lacks. The real kicker to me is naming Kusal Mendis as the vice-captain, he shouldn't even be in the team or be playing cricket let alone be a senior member and leader of this squad. Sets such a wrong example. In terms of performances, he has definitely improved from his previously terrible record and is now a decent number four.

The ideal captain IMO should have been Shanaka. Think he was the one who led the Lankan B side to victory over Pakistan away in T20Is and he has a good domestic track record. Also is a very underrated player who deserves more praise. I also like that they're handing out opportunities to blokes like Binura Fernando who were thrown into the deep end too soon earlier.

I just had a look at his performances since his comeback. He has been really average, my perception was probably based on his 97-run innings against Australia in the WC. But he hasn't done anything considerable apart from that. Yes, he has been deservingly dropped!!!

de Silva's batting has been Cricket Captain-esque.
