why is a contrivance of a tournament allowed to dominate the English cricket season. They’ve even moved the Ashes away from August to accommodate it

It attracts two important groups with money - families (because a shorter game at nighttime is more friendly to children) and sponsors.

That said, the Ashes aren't always in August - for instance, the 1975 one was only there due to the Cricket World Cup being in June. It works both ways

You do need money. It was £8 per pint and £14 for goat curry.
