Good evening all! Some of you may be aware of my recent Worst of Test Cricket draft. Given its positive reception, it seems only logical to follow up with the logical sister draft:

The Worst of ODI Cricket
137290.jpg

Much like the previous one, there will most definitely be rules regarding who you can pick to stop people picking the entire United States Champions Trophy team from 2004 and just generally to make it a bit more interesting. Those rules are:
  1. Your team must have a minimum of 200 ODI caps between them.
  2. You must select no more than one player per country.
  3. All players must perform their real-life role in the team. (No wicket-keepers opening the bowling)
  4. You must have at least five recognised bowlers in your team. (This will mostly be down to common-sense, but if it comes into dispute then the player you are nominating as a bowler must have bowled in at least half of their ODI matches.)
  5. Your captain must have captained at least one ODI match.
I know that's quite a lot of rules, but most of them are just common sense.

Please feel free to start signing up straight away; again I plan to cap it at six okay, that went well - we'll call it seven participants.

Your team must have a minimum of 100 ODI caps between them.
In the interest of making this particularly interesting, I'm tempted to make this a minimum of 200 caps instead. Please let me know your thoughts on this when you sign up.

Many thanks to all who have so far signed up; I'll hold out until the end of Sunday for a sixth participant, but no sweat if no-one else has the time

Overall Pick #2: Srinivas Venkataraghavan
pras.jpg.image.784.410.jpg

Profile
Before he became a notoriously biased umpire, Venkat was a minor part of the famous Indian spin quartet. Although it seemed like the sky was the limit when he got picked in the Test side while still in his teens, he evolved into a holding spinner whose job was to keep the runs down whenever Bedi or Prasanna got tired. It was a job he did well enough, and one which ought to translate fairly well into One-Day International cricket, right?

Wrong. Across his fifteen-match career as a specialist bowler, he managed only five wickets. And this wasn't for a lack of bowling either: he took a wicket only once every 29 overs, which is one of the very worst strike rates of all time in the format.
And he performed even worse as captain: he managed just one wicket in seven matches, resulting in a bowling average as skipper of 263. India also managed only one win under his leadership, a win that came against the utter might of East Africa in the 1975 World Cup.

As far as objectively good cricketers who were dreadful at one-day cricket go, it's hard to look past Venkat.

Statistics
ODIS - :bat: 54 runs @ 10.80, SR 42.85 (best 26*) and :bwl: 5 wickets @ 108.40, econ 3.74 (best 2/34) in 15 matches
LIST A - :bat: 346 runs @ 11.16, SR n/a (best 26*) and :bwl: 64 wickets @ 35.34, econ 3.40 (best 4/31) in 71 matches

Role in the Team

Why, what else would I do with a guy whose bowling average is over 100, and his captaincy record against sides better than East Africa was 0-6? Why, make him my captain and main spinner of course.

Ooh interesting; a fairly competent player, but he bags you over half of your cap limit and a captain. Very interesting strategy

It was on basis of the fact that's he's been in and out of the side, wholly inconsistent despite being given so many chances, selectors still can't decide what his best position is and for 100+ caps he only has an average of 21.

Oh, no disagreements at all. To be so consistently poor despite 100 caps in a batting order that (most of the time) also included Jayasuriya, Tharanga, Sangakkara, Jayawardene and Dilshan is actually really impressive.

It's also really useful because you only need to find a minimum of 98 caps from your last ten guys
