Overall Pick #54: Courtney Kruger
hong-kong-cricketer-courtney-k.jpg

Profile
I feel a little bit bad here because Courtney Kruger is one of my favourite cricketers. His backstory - of being diagnosed in late 2007 with an abscess in his brain after suffering debilitating migraines on the flight home from the ACC Twenty20, of having to have half of his cranium removed for three months to relieve the pressure, of then being bedridden for three further months of recovers, and then recovering quickly enough to make his One-Day International debut in June 2008's Asia Cup - well, his backstory beggars belief completely. He must be one of the toughest cricketers on the planet.

However... well, there's no easy way to say this, but he's not actually that good at cricket. No matter where I look, there's almost no record of the right-hander ever actually scoring runs. Not in his U19 career, his representative Hong Kong career, his T20 Blitz career, or that which is readily available of his Hong Kong Premier Division career. It's like he kept getting picked for his courage and leadership qualities, only for people to catch on years later to the fact that he didn't actually score runs.

Statistics
ODIS - :bat: 3 runs @ 1.50, SR 15.00 (best 3) in 2 matches
LIST A - :bat: 44 runs @ 4.88, SR 26.03 (best 18) in 9 matches

Role in the Team

With stats like those, you'd think number eleven all day long. With footwork like that in the photo you'd think the same. But Courtney Kruger manages all of those things while batting at number five in the batting order. It's actually kind of impressive in a perverse way.

Sairaj Bahutule

A domestic great who was crap at the international level, this all-rounder could not impress either with the bat or the ball.

He played a total of 8 ODIs, bowling in 7 innings, taking only 2 wickets at 141.5 with S/R of 147 and economy of 5.77. The fact all his matches were in Asia and 4 in India, I think his record could have been much worse had he played overseas at the start of his career.
Then you look at his list-a stats and you are like "This man underachieved!" I strongly feel he should not be in this draft but his performances have put him here. He bowled an average of 6 overs per innings. But in my team, he will have to bowl full 10 overs.

Even in the 2 test matches he played, he did not take more than 1 wicket in the three innings he bowled. And again, they were in Asia.

That will cap off my 5-man bowling attack. With Naimur and Mbangwa, there is a proven record of failure. Damien Ravu clearly lacks experience as compared to his peers and will falter. His T20 record is very impressive but 50 overs cricket is just not his cup of tea. Bahutule will show potential with his records but not perform against better players (which are plenty here! :( :spy) And Dipak Patel might keep the runs down but will allow the opposition batsmen to get set. And don't expect him to turn the ball.
