Simple thread to encourage some discussion. The only rule being is that you have to list an underrated and overrated player for the particular cricket playing nation team you wish to name. Feel free to include any number of nations from the cricketing world and you can list bowlers/batsmen/wicket keepers specifically or in general.

So I’ll have a go with Team India:

Most overrated: Sachin Tendulkar
Most underrated: Rahul Dravid

Good thread this one! Might lead to a war of words amongst a few though!

I have to agree with the above assessment of Team India, so not going to add in anything more there. For the rest of the nations, here it goes:

Australia
Overrated: Michael Clarke
Underrated: Nathan Lyon

New Zealand
Overrated: Kane Williamson
Underrated: Mitch Santner

Sri Lanka
Overrated: Lasith Malinga
Underrated: Arjuna Ranatunga

Pakistan
Overrated: Shahid Afridi
Underrated: Younis Khan

West Indies
Overrated: Andre Russell
Underrated: Shivnarine Chanderpaul

England
Overrated: Andrew Flintoff
Underrated: Nasser Hussain

In Test cricket, I'd tend to agree. He is remembered mostly for a handful of great performances across an otherwise fairly average career.

In one-day cricket the opposite is true though - even now with the Roots, Buttlers, Bairstows and Stokeses he'd be the first name on my teamsheet for an all-time England ODI XI

Ian Botham: Test GOAT, ODI average
Freddy: Test average, ODI GOAT

I see a pattern here

‘War of words’. We did have some great debates back in the days.

With regards to Younis Khan you are quite correct, personally I never made much of him but as I look back now he should definitely be regarded higher, guess people would always see him below Inzy and Yousuf though. Same argument for Chanderpaul, always underrated due to playing most of his cricket alongside Lara.

I dont think you quite understand the meaning of the two terms like the OP of this thread, but then again he's a troll and has an agenda behind his posts whatever it may be.

The only correct assessment is of shahid afridi being overrated and unnecessarily being given a legend tag although he was the ultimate entertainer.

Always thought Stuart MacGill was underrated, simply because of some guy named Warne. He was a good leggie in his own right, but because his playing days overlapped with Warne, he always found himself compared to the latter.

I agree with Flintoff and Botham. They both pretty much only had one Ashes series of note, and suddenly they're hotter than lava.

Chanderpaul wasn't underrated as much as generally glossed over for much of his career. That's what happens when you're reliable without being flamboyant. It's not that we didn't rate him highly, but to us it was like, "Oh, there's a top order collapse, no problem, Chanderpaul to bat until forever." But that's just it, he was just THE guy that we relied on so often that it became something of a given for us. We rated him very highly, we just didn't appreciate it enough.

VVS Laxman is underrated for India, I think. I loved watching him bat, especially against spinners.
