Time to spitball some Test XIs:

1. :eng: :bat: Rory Burns
2. :eng: :bat: Dominic Sibley
3. :eng: :bat: Sam Hain
4. :eng: :bat: Joe Root
5. :eng: :ar: Ben Stokes
6. :eng: :bat: Ollie Pope
7. :eng: :wk: Ben Foakes
8. :eng: :bwl: Dom Bess
9. :eng: :bwl: Mark Wood
10. :eng: :bwl: Stuart Broad
11. :eng: :bwl: Jimmy Anderson
12. :eng: :ar: Chris Woakes

A few things:
  • Hain at number three off the back of an excellent 2019 in the Championship and having a technique with very few moving parts (important after a long lay-off).
  • Bess over Leach mostly because of the absolutely catastrophic illness and injury record that Leach has had in the last year. I wouldn't want to put him in harm's way.
  • Wood over Archer because I think there's a strong case for rotating the pace spearheads.
1. :wi: :bat: Kraigg Brathwaite
2. :wi: :bat: Shayne Moseley
3. :wi: :bat: Shamarh Brooks
4. :wi: :bat: Shai Hope
5. :wi: :bat: Sunil Ambris
6. :wi: :ar: Roston Chase
7. :wi: :wk: Shane Dowrich
8. :wi: :ar: Jason Holder
9. :wi: :ar: Rahkeem Cornwall
10. :wi: :bwl: Kemar Roach
11. :wi: :bwl: Shannon Gabriel
12. :wi: :bwl: Alzarri Joseph

A few things:
  • If Jason Holder is even nearly fit, he has to play. If he's not fit to bowl, then I think he still makes the side as a batsman and leader, with Chase-Holder-Dowrich as your 5-6-7.
  • Moseley gets a debut ahead of Campbell based on his efforts in the squad match, and that he has a history of playing well when opening with Kraigg Brathwaite.
  • King Rahkeem of Cornwall gets a game, because he's the best spinner in the West Indies. This means there will be at least one slip at all times.

As suspected Root is out of the first game due to personal reasons. Will be very interesting to see how England perform under a different captain.

As for his replacement, Denly moving down the order with Crawley at three sounds like the pragmatic choice, but we all know that Pope shall be moved up to four for the one true Yorkshire man Jonny Bairstow.

Yeah, although I do have a bit of an issue with that captain being Stokes. Burns would be a much safer choice, and would be less likely to bowl England's best player into the ground.

And the question of replacing Root is an interesting one. The sane approach would be Burns, Sibley, Crawley or Denly, Hain, Stokes, Pope, Foakes. The 2019 England approach would be Burns, Sibley, Bairstow, Pope, Stokes, Buttler, Curran. Reality will probably be somewhere in the middle
