Plenty of other questions that need to be answered too.....

Which came first? Orange the fruit or orange the colour?
Why do you feel more tired when you get up than you do when you go to bed? Not even my doctor can answer that one!
What happened to all those rocket packs scientists said we'd all have by now?

I've actually found an answer to the question........

[size=-1]A chemical found in carrots is called beta-Carotene which is orange in colour, meaning that it absorbs green and blue light yet reflects red(ish) light.

Orange carrots have actually only been around since the 16th Century, having been selectively bred by the Dutch. Before then, there were purple carrots, green carrots, red carrots, yellow carrots, and even (believe it or not) white carrots!

I think the colour white is a social construct and thus what we accept to be white is in fact an arbitrary confluence of light particles.
In the words of the hitchhikers guide, 'having successfully proved that black was white he got killed on the next Zebra crossing'.

I wasn't aware The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy would be on a reading list for a History degree. :p

This thread is more than a year old, I don't see the need in restarting it now.

I can't understand why I made this thread. Perhaps there was a punchline and I forgot the joke. But as I recall, I think there was a tangential discussion about this in another thread.

Edit: Might have been a converation in the chatroom actually
