With Bangladesh getting bowled out for less than 100 runs TWICE in this World Cup, I was wondering how many other sides had been an how bad this was for a Test nation. So I trawled through the World Cup records to see how many times any one nation had been skittled for less than 100 in the same World Cup, across all World Cups, and which World Cup had the most instances.

It has happened 17 times in the 10 World Cups between 1975 and 2011 - so far.

Most times bowled out for under 100 in one World Cup

2 Namibia (2003) : 84 vs Pakistan, 45 vs Australia
2 Ireland (2007) : 77 vs Sri Lanka, 91 vs Australia (both 'Super Eight' matches)
2 Bangladesh (2011) : 58 vs West Indies, 78 vs South Africa

1 each for :

Sri Lanka (1975) : 86 vs West Indies
East Africa (1975) : 94 vs England
England (1975) : 93 vs Australia (low scoring Semi-Final)
Canada (1979) : 45 vs England
Pakistan (1992) : 74 vs England
West Indies (1996) : 93 vs KENYA
Scotland (1999) : 68 vs West Indies
Canada (2003) : 36 vs Sri Lanka (lowest ever total)
Bermuda (2007) : 78 vs Sri Lanka
Zimbabwe (2007) : 99 vs Pakistan
Kenya (2011) : 69 vs New Zealand

Most times bowled out for under 100 in all World Cups (plus number of matches to date)

2 Canada (1979 & 2003, 18 matches)
2 Namibia (2003, 6 matches)
2 Ireland (2007, 15 matches)
2 Bangladesh (2011, 26 matches)

1 each for :

East Africa (1975, 3 matches)
England (1975, 66 matches)
Sri Lanka (1975, 66 matches)
Pakistan (1992, 62 matches)
West Indies (1996, 64 matches)
Scotland (1999, 8 matches)
Bermuda (2007, 3 matches)
Zimbabwe (2007, 51 matches)
Kenya (2011, 29 matches)

Only Test nations to avoid this ignimony are Australia, South Africa, India and New Zealand. It's quite remarkable that teams like Zimbabwe, Kenya and even Sri Lanka as they were not so strong in the earlier World Cups, have only been bowled out once for less than 100 runs in a World Cup. The amount of exposure some of the other sides have it is no wonder they were bowled out cheaply

Most totals under 100 in a World Cup

4 in 2007 (Ireland 91 & 77, Zimbabwe 99, and Bermuda 78)
3 in 1975 (Sri Lanka 86, East Africa 94, and England 93)
3 in 2003 (Namibia 84 & 45, and Canada 36)
3 in 2011 (Bangladesh 58 & 78, and Kenya 69)
1 in 1979 (Canada 45)
1 in 1992 (Pakistan 74)
1 in 1996 (West Indies 93)
1 in 1999 (Scotland 68)

technically, that's not totally fair as Sri Lanka were not a test nation when they were bowled out for under 100. they only recieved test status in 1982, 7 years after that match.

I didn't say they were a Test team at the time. Objection noted fwiw which ain't a lot, now written in invisible ink in my mind until I forget about it ;) I'll put another note by it that, should Ireland gain Test status, they can have the same objection noted too.

Being bowled out for less than 100 is pretty bad even for a non-Test nation. For some it is more forgivable than others, but the best 11 cricketers in a country that plays cricket as a major sport should manage 100+ between 11 players and extras.

West Indies just about avoided another humiliation yesterday.
