I expect Ireland to win at least one ODI. Although to do that, all their senior pros must have to step up.

I don't think so. They struggled to beat Afghanistan although on slow Indian pitches of that of Lucknow but I think England are too good a side to beat at home. England could win 3-0 even without Root, Stokes and Buttler. I believe 350+ would be scored in one of the matches.

Framed that sentence wrong... I want Ireland to win at least one.

If England bat like England Lions there's a good chance of 400. It'll be interesting to see who replaces Root, Buttler, Stokes but also Woakes, Archer and Wood from what I'd consider the first XI. They decided not to pick Phil Salt (who got a 58 ball 100) which must mean they want Roy and Bairstow to get game time. Reckon they'll go with this:

Roy
Bairstow
Vince
Morgan
Denly
Billings
Moeen
Curran T
Rashid
Mahmood
Topley

Surprised to see Adil Rashid is still in contention. Is he like confined to limited overs only now?

I believe initially the scoring would be tough because it's been a long time since we've had an ODI and Ireland would certainly be lot more competent coming into the ODI series. And as far as I remember England is playing only their third ODI series since the World Cup which was more than a year ago. Teams often take time to get used to a different format of the game altogether so there are chances that the first match would be a bit low scoring. But I still think a 3-0 is very much on cards for the English side.

Also I wanted to ask what are the chances of Moeen Ali batting at 3 ? Because I think 3 is a bit too high for someone like Morgan since you wouldn't have anyone to go after the bowling in the middle overs. And Moeen had opened the batting for England that too in a tournament like the World Cup back in 2015 and there he had done well so he can bat at 3 I believe. My team for England would be:-

Roy
Bairstow
Moeen Ali
Eoin Morgan
Joe Denly
Sam Billings
David Willey
Tom Curran
Adil Rashid
Reece Topley
Saqib Mahmood

Edit: This is only the second ODI series for England since the 2019 World Cup.

It's not impossible but I think Vince will probably bat at 3 as a replacement for Root. Moeen is only going to get in the first XI at 7 so it'd make sense, in my opinion to have him bat at 6 or 7. Although he's been batting 4 in the practice games.

I don't see there being much difficulty getting out of the blocks. There's been some big scoring in the warm up games. I think it's only Denly who has played a test, everyone else has been limited to the one day bubble so switching formats shouldn't be an issue.

I am keen to see how Saqib does: looks like someone with potential?

Without Adair in the squad, Ireland will have a really tough time. Also think Porterfield needs to be phased out of the side, someone who plays this slowly is not required in a modern ODI and he isn't getting any older. Most of the classic English collapses seem to happen only in a five game series and so I back them to easily win all three games. The Irish would have done really well if they can challenge for a victory in all three matches. Looking forward to seeing how Campher performs, was a former South African U-19 player who could add to their arsenal of all-rounders. Will be an interesting test to see if he adapts well, Ireland could certainly make a case towards Nick Larkin for their T20 World Cup squad to switch allegiances if they handle Campher's transition smoothly.

Not too sure about Mo up the order, he was very poor in the World Cup with the bat and hasn't been his old self for quite some time. Vince on the other hand has been steadily impressing in the domestic circuit and if he gets rid of his mental issues could be a very handy top order batsman. One player I really would have loved to see is Sam Hain who has the highest List A average in the world currently. On paper he really is the natural Root replacement/backup.

Topley was a class bowler once, any idea if he is still good and fit enough to last ten overs? If he is fit though, could be a very realistic shoo-in for the main team. If I had to choose an England XI...

While they both played well in the Lions match, I don't want two domestic giants who have underachieved internationally in the same XI and while he was very good versus South Africa, I still would go for Banton in the first game to 'ease' Denly back in if he is viewed as a first choice. Don't view him as a long-term prospect anyways, if you're gonna discard one of your best bowlers in Plunkett disgracefully because he will not be of use in the next World Cup, there is no place for Denly too. Bairstow should get the gloves to ease his keeping worries and to reduce the workload on Buttler in the future especially if the plan is for him to be the captain eventually. England can afford to go with five genuine bowling options and an all-rounder as the sixth option versus Ireland with Rashid down at nine for batting depth. Gives Mo a decent responsibility with the bat without overburdening him too much.[DOUBLEPOST=1596048943][/DOUBLEPOST]

When I last saw him play (versus New Zealand, I believe?) he was a bit too raw. Will be interesting to see how he fares now that he is being rated highly by those in the setup.

It seems odd that under the circumstances, with Root unavailable, that Hain isn't even in the squad. I've seen it said maybe his strike rate is too low but it's about the same as Root. I assume Vince is seen as next in line for any of the top three. I know we are in extraordinary times but you would expect England would be looking ahead to 2023. Of course they might be looking at players that will form part of the T20 World Cup squad.
