India in England Jun-Sept 2014

what about bairstow ?He is young and could be groomed, also pretty decent with bat.It has to be between butler, bairstow or prior, reads is too old esp for the new vision eng, as KP itself is doesnt make the cut, bates and rouse needs more exposure.Even though ENG batting has a lot of depth, still in this age you need a WK who can bat well.

It did not !

4 Tests is a pretty good number to test out a players strengths and weaknesses...

In India (Avg/Econ)

Ashwin (24.12/2.83)
Jadeja (19.85/2.03)

Outside India (Avg/Econ)

Ashwin (74.77/3.20)
Jadeja (54.55/2.63)

Straightforward statistics really.

Jadeja's overseas average will be on par with Ashwin's if he plays today.

Ashwin is a better batsmen, and a more attacking spinner than Jadeja. Jadeja's entry into tests itself was not a "its time he came in" thing. He is a bits and pieces cricketer like Binny. Ashwin might have his off days, but I would risk with a specialist spinner than on a bits and pieces spinner. If we had Mishra or Ojha here, I would have wanted them to play. But with only Ashwin, they have to pick him over Jadeja. And stats to compare Ashwin and Jadeja is a waste of time right now, because they havent played as much to do that kind of a comparison

With the bat, Jadeja just throws it around and is lucky if he gets a few runs (thats what his approach has been). Ashwin can stick in there and bat sensibly.

Jadeja is not a bits and pieces cricketer, his bowling is good enough to have him deemed a specialist, at the very least a front line spinner, he actually has a 6-fer overseas, and that's certainly more than Ashwin can say.

MS Dhoni implacable on Anderson rumpus | Cricket News | Global | ESPN Cricinfo

Jadeja, he who turned around suddenly, is ironically not known for turning - he turns only the odd ball in a spell. He is ridiculed for having scored three first-class triple-centuries on flat pitches in India; he is not much of a batsman as we have seen. Yet India have insisted on him, and his bowling has shown merit enough to become a Test spinner.

He has a fat IPL contract with Dhoni's team, and is managed by Dhoni's best friend and manager. Cricket players are a small world, they notice these things, and they are not known for liking Jadeja much. If Anderson is the habitual sledger, Jadeja is that annoying successful and rich man who not many believe should be.

:lol Funny observation.

Unchanged XIs.

This is how you get broken bowlers.

But Binny seems so excited to be playing, and nice green grassy pitch it seems.

This green mamba at Lords is going to produce an interesting game. India will be in this one if they can notch up around 250-300 here. However, I fear a sub 200 collapse for us today.

This was just the type of pitch England were hoping for but they've wasted the new ball. The fields haven't been attacking enough and it's not all cooks fault. As the commentators have just said, the bowlers need to set better fields too.

Add to that some terrible length bowling, pitching the ball way too short on a pitch like this should be a criminal offence.

Thank Lords, for now they have the perfect pitch that everyone expected to have here.Binny would be keen to bowl here and if he performs, its going to do good for India for rest of the series.

Moeen Ali should not be bowling in the first session on this pitch in a team with 4 fast bowlers in it.

I don't know if this is funky captaincy or if the quicks are already tired.

Prior is having a horrid time behind the stumps. Looks like Dhawan is really struggling.

Prior is just too loose these days, maybe it's all the injuries, I think this is opening up a space for someone new, young and hungry to come in. My bet is Butler.

Damn this. Fking damn! Kohli was firing over those poms....

Please don't collapse from here.

i don't think we'll collapse. probably just stumble to 220-250, which looks a decent total right now. but, the pitch will flatten out and then bowling first will look like a great decision.

Agh .. so many starts thrown away :(

BTW, did the English crowd boo the Indian team (or Dhoni) yet ? or maybe they are saving that as a welcome for Jadeja

Edit: LOL .. saving it for Jadeja indeed. Gets a loud boo. Although Indian fans made themselves heard too with 'Jadeja Jadeja'

this is a much more interesting start than we've had to any other test this summer
