I wonder how many people have actually done this. Most people in England do it when they're in Year 10 and again in Yr 12. I'm working in a hospital, in the Medical Physics department. Basically, repairing and testing hospital electronics. I had my first day today- not bad, had some great moments. Most of the people in the department are quite young, (20-26), and it's good fun working. Couple of amusing moments were when:

1) The "boss" of the department walks in and asks, " Has anyone fixed the stainers from the Pathology department?"
[everyone turns around to face him and there's a long awkward silence]
"Does anyone know what a stainer is?" Everyone says no!!

2) There was problem with an infusion pump, one that pumps drugs into the patient. The consultant has to fill a form saying what's wrong with the equipment and whether it has been thoroughly cleaned, as you don't want to deal with infected equipment. So we take a look at it and there's this huge blood stain on the bottom. The guy (who I tag along with) phones the department where the equipment came from.
Mike (from Medical Physics): Hello, can I speak to Dr. Gerald please?
Dr Gerald: Yeah, that's me.
Mike: Well, did you send an infusion pump to Medical Physics?
Dr Gerald: Yeah.
Mike: Did you clean it ?
Dr Gerald: Yeah.
Mike: Well, you bloody haven't 'coz there's a bloody stain on it and I don't want to be bloody infected!!! :rtfl

What experience have you all had?

well my work experience is gonna be from 10th to 21st July in a boring old charity shop...i tried in all sorts of shops, banks, library but all were full or didn't do it and now i am stuck there...

We actually had to donate our money to the dam school! So they were getting something out of it. I just worked for my dad though :p

We were drafted into "clean the neighbourhood" drives.

I have photos of myself posing with a broom with background of slumps!

Well its not exactly the same but for the new FET curriculum in Grade 10, you have to serve 16 hours of compulsory community service, needless to say no one is looking forward to it.

Year 10 and 12? First time I've ever heard anyone do it twice. Did it in year 10, worked in a sports shop, got a job out of it afterwards. Worked there reguarly for about 3 and half years. Now do the odd job for them with brands.

lol u are gona look funny there ;)

started mine 3 weeks ago to the day, did one weke in a hospital which if i stood on mr roof, could comfortably urinate on,

handy for travel (went home for dinner, and played pro evo)

other than that the highlights of my first week were 12 and a half spins on a spinny chair, off 1 kick and erm well thats pretty much it, oh and i had a chocolate eclair on the tuesday, busy week

2nd week i did in some training facility for teenagers, it teaches practical stuff, although i was kept in the office all day and didnt really speak with them,

highligh of the week was either

a)listening to my mp3 all week

or

b) putting things in the fan so it made a funny noise

as you can see my work experience was a complete waste of time, i'd have rather been in school having a laugh with my mates, although most people in my year enjoyed it so i suppose its my fault for just choosing the sheets by post code without even reading the information

Mine was a week at Westminster shadowing an MP. The best part was walking past all the tourists in the morning and just waving my pass to get in!
It was also pretty fun summarising reports, briefing the MP and seeing the work I had done being used. This was 1998 so only the second year of New Labour when everything was still new and shiney...
I managed to avoid doing any photocopying or making any coffee (and I recommend the members restaurant and bar too!)

I did work experience at an electrical shop, doing repairs etc. I also got a job out of it.
It wasnt my first choice, I had planned on doing work experience at an advertising agency, but they double booked by accident. On the first day two of use turned up and they were expecting only one, I went back to school and they asked what else did I want to do and I mentioned I was interested in repairing things so they made a few phone calls and the rest is history.

I also did work experience as a maintenance engineer at a milk plant in France while I was at college. That was interesting as my french was really poor!

We just do it in year 10 in Aus.

Did it last year, first week did it in a furniture store/company working in the warehouse and the shop. Hated it. Would have rather been at school, so I told them to bugger off and did the next week at my old primary school 30 seconds walk away.

Work experience is a load of crap really.

Its cheap labour for the employers and a holiday for the teachers.

I did work experience here:

(it was on TV because of Gary Ablett's alleged bashing)
Extremely boring, and it only got me $25 (which is the lowest they can pay you), luckely it was only a week. I also had to wear a shirt and tie, something I had never done before.

My brother did it with the Sydney Morning Herald as we knew a guy who worked with them in the graphics department or something, but as far as I know, our school've scrapped it. I'd love to do it, but unfortunately we won't be able to...
Anyway, we do a community service thing in year's nine and eleven- sorta like Maxkarter's- where we attend four three hour sessions at various places (i.e. special schools, child care centres, retirement homes, etc).
